View Full Version : Comparisons for those who do both [Crowds at Disneyland vs Walt Disney World]
eyeorelover 03-25-2008, 09:05 AM Hi all,
I am trying to do all my research and planning keep coming up with a general question about how busy WDW will be in June. This will be my family's first trip to WDW (husband and I went back in 96) but we now have DD-9 and DS-6. I feel we are very DLR literate and don't fear all the changes the World has to offer, but I am wondering about how much more crowded WDW will be than the DL I am used to. We have been to DL over 4th of July weeks and the weekends prior to Thanksgiving (we tend to avoid the Thanksgiving day and Christmas Holidays) and I am wondering for those of you who have experienced both places in comparable times of the year, how will that compare to WDW in June. We will be there June 8-20. I just keep reading about the massive crowds and am wondering if thet really are worse than what I've seen, or more so for people who just aren't used to it, and don't know how to tour around the masses. Any and all advice/opinions are appreciated.
Thanks!
Mindy
Drince88 03-25-2008, 09:30 AM It's hard to compare, because there is so much more room at WDW - and everything is much more spread out. Even Main Street is wider. For example, they rent double strollers at WDW, and there is no way they would have room for them at DL.
I don't think it's going to be any worse than DL over the 4th of July, though. (Not that I've done DL over the 4th of July, or WDW in June).
It will be more humid, though - so make sure you watch your water intake and take advantage of air conditioned shows and buildings! And make sure you make any ADRs for meals you want to eat off of 'real' plates!
With kids the ages of yours, I'm presuming you're going in June due to school schedules. ANYTIME you can go is going to be more crowded than times you can't go. So don't stress about it, and go with the flow. You're there for a long enough trip that you should be able to do what you want without killing yourselves.
eyeorelover 03-25-2008, 09:51 AM Thanks Cathy. We are going in June not only for the kids schedules, but DH is a teacher too. We know to expect it to be busy and we do have plans to work around the crowds, take full advantage of the Fastpass system and all that, but the more and more I read, I kept getting more curious about crowd levels. It seems like some of the planning sites (touringplans and TGM) almost put the fear of God into thier plans about the masses of people and I'm really wondering if it's that bad, or only that bad for people who aren't expecting it, and haven't really planned anything to deal with it. I know we are going to have a great trip, no matter what, but was just wondering what it would most be compared to in crowds I am familar with (ie DL on 4th of July). It so funny, my husband and I know it was hot and humid and crowded when we were there on our honeymoon in 8/96, but really don't remember the crowds or heat/humidity as ever being a negative factor to our trip - maybe it was the newly wedded bliss? Thanks again for your advice!

danyoung 03-26-2008, 06:40 AM As my friend Drince said above, WDW is so much more spread out that the crowds are much more easily absorbed. DL on the 4th of July is of course wall to wall people. I don't think you'll encounter anything even close to that. Just take advantage of good touring practices and you'll be fine. Get to the park of your choice at opening, park storm till lunch time, then head back to your hotel for a swim and a nap. Head back into the park of your choice (and I highly recommend park hopper tickets!), and party till park closing. Take advantage of Extra Magic Hours whenever possible. These work really well in the mornings, when most folks won't want to get up so early on their vacations. You'll find the evening EMH park will be pretty crowded for the first 90 minutes or so of EMH time, as people have been pouring into that park all afternoon. Just stick it out, and you'll find that you have the park to yourselves for the last 90 minutes or so. Have a general plan of attack, but be ready to change it if the lines are long. You can always go on people eater attractions like the Hall of Presidents or the Peoplemover. Spaceship Earth always has long lines in the morning, but is practically walk-on in the afternoons.
Anyway, just a few tips to help get the most out of your time in a busy season. Enjoy!
eyeorelover 03-26-2008, 09:55 AM Thanks Dan. Even with Wall to Wall people in DL we have never felt crowded except trying to walk anywhere during parade/fireworks time, so I was wondering if WDW was really worse. Glad to know you don't think it will be. Knowing that, I think we'll be just fine with all the plans we have made. We are doing what you suggest with getting there at opening (I think we're actually avoiding the Early morning Magic hours (or the park that has them each day) since coming from CA, I know we won't be able to get up THAT early but we will make the 9:00 am rope drop at the park we do go to each day and then do as you suggest and when we do the late EMH, wait out the crowds until the last 90 minutes and enjoy. We do have the hoppers and do plan on afternoon breaks and naps. Thanks again for your help - I can't wait for the trip!
