View Full Version : Mission: Space Intense vs Less Intense
FDDK4 03-20-2008, 06:29 PM I need some help. The last time we were at Disney there was only one version of Mission: Space. I loved it but my wife would not go anywhere near it. How is the new, less intense, version? My wife is still not sure she wants to try it.
WDW heart 03-20-2008, 06:46 PM I went on the less intense (wuss side is what we called it:p) in January. Think Star Tours meets Soarin. That's the best way for me to describe it. It is fun and enjoyable but not spectacular. I was always afraid to do the old version because A) my oldest DD has had a previous brain injury and even though I know it would probably be OK, I couldn't do it. And B) I didn't want to spend the rest of the day being sick or vomit on the ride as I have heard some people do. I still want to try it one of these days.
GusMan 03-20-2008, 07:09 PM For those who would normally get sick by the spinning motion, the less intense side works out great. The "Star Tours meets Soarin'" comment perfectly describes it.
Drince88 03-21-2008, 04:58 AM I do NOT recommend either version for anyone who is claustrophobic. I think the thread about intensity of the rollercoasters includes some stories about this factor.
There is quite a bit of movement, for example, you do go on your back and 'shake' for takeoff but it is MUCH smoother than Star Tours, IMHO.

Why wouldn't your wife go on it before and why isn't she sure she wants to go on it now? I think knowing the reason would help us give advice.
However - here's something that she can do on either side. Go on it. She can leave before she boards the capsule. She'll be given tons of opportunities to do that. It's not a big deal and a lot of people do it. She can see the preshow, see the capsules, see everything except the actual stuff inside the capsule. If she decides she doesn't want to do it, she'll be waiting for you at the gift shop after you ride. All she will lose is the time you are on the capsule.
It's hard to judge any attraction from the outside with only a description of what it does.
dawz1026 03-21-2008, 10:08 AM My MIL rode the less intense and she was a bit tipsy after it.She said whoa..thats some ride.
Mrs. GusMan 03-21-2008, 10:24 AM I'm a wimp! I never went on the "intense" side. I do not do motion well but decided to try the "less intense" side and absolutely loved it. The story line is captivating again and again. The motion was not bad - I almost backed out but Goofy girl (DD 13) would not let me. We went on the ride again as soon as we could get back on because I loved it so much.
Tell your wife she can give it a try and hold her hand to make her feel better. Try not to do this with a full stomach though. Also, you may want to do it at the end of the day "just in case", at least a whole day will not be lost.
Let us know how she likes it! Enjoy! I will be enjoying it again in 33 days!

rashiz 03-21-2008, 11:14 AM I am glad I tried the less intensive side. I never did the other. I will probably not choose to do it again because of my claustrophobia issues, but I do think its a great ride and worth experiencing.
Now, I was under the impression that the less intense version was going to be boring. But based on what I have read here, I may have to try this when I go back. I went on it before there was a change, and I loved it. My wife hated it. So I may ride the toned down version with her.
biolabetty 03-21-2008, 12:24 PM My friend, who is an imagineer, told me that both sides have the same show. I tried them both, and the green side felt very mild compared to the orange. Our friends who never go on anything more violent than Small World, enjoyed the green side.
That sounds a little too mild for me.
I guess that I will just have to stick to the original!
ElephantEars 03-21-2008, 01:53 PM For those of you who get dizzy/headaches going on spinning rides at amusement parks, is that the sensation you get from the Orange/Intense side? I do great on all thrill rides except for spinny things, so I'm not sure yet which side I should choose.

Regarding the "orange" side -- if you follow the instructions they give (don't close your eyes, don't turn your head, don't lean forward) you should be fine.
At the very start of the ride, at "lift off," I typically have just a couple seconds of "disorientation." It's hard to describe, it's very brief & very mild, but it's nothing like dizziness from the Tea Cups ride or anything like that. After that couple seconds, it's all systems go, full speed ahead, and I love this ride !!!
A few years ago (in my "regular life"--not anything to do with Walt Disney World), I had a rather mild bout with vertigo; prob'ly some inner ear congestion or something. Never lasted long; never caused any problem; but anyway, because of all the warnings, that situation was definitely on my mind the first time I rode M:S . I decided I just HAD to ride it anyway, and I'd deal with any consequences when I came to 'em. But, thankfully, I never had any consequences. I've ridden it multiple times on multiple visits, and never had any problems.
Use your own discretion, and certainly follow instructions; but I think this is a great ride !!!
nvmom 03-21-2008, 04:53 PM We just returned from WDW and I just rode Mission Space for the first time this past Mon. We did green first and then returned for the more intense orange w/FP later in the day.
This is was an enteresting ride to me. Let me say it was so much "less" than I expected after all the warnings they give you. I totally agree with the above poster on Soarin meets Star Tours- very accurate. :) Green IMO is very mild. And I say that as a complete chicken of rides. BTMRR is about as big as I can get for roller coasters. I've done Space Mtn but I do not enjoy it. I am scared to death the entire time. But Mission Space orange was cool... and again, far "less" than what I expected with all their warnings and such. I also consider myself to be somewhat clausterphobic and felt the capsule was not bad at all. No issues w/space/size for me. And to be honest I didn't even get a great spinning sensation???
So, I think this is ride you really have to try. Everyone reacts differently... this one is hard to out guess.

My sister does not like Dumbo, Magic Carpets, Triceratops and WILL NOT ride AstroOrbitor because of the spinning. She does fine on the intense version of Mission:Space.

You should go on the green side with your wife. It the same thing without the spinning. The story is the same, Gary Sinise is the same, even the woman in the preshow is the same. The only thing my husband said was different for him was he didn't feel any push back when he put his hand out in front of him to push the buttons.
Here's my story. I loved the original. Then I had an accident and couldn't ride that anymore. I was crushed because it was my favorite attraction. While I was in the hospital the green side opened up. I still wasn't sure I could go on it but I looked at the warnings and decided to try it. I told my husband to go on the orange side and I'd do the green. He said he'd try the green side with me. Now, I cannot tell you how happy that made me. He was willing to give up a thrill version so he could ride with me. When we got off the green side, he got out and said "we can the green side from now on, there's barely any difference." Really made the accident seem much less painful.
danyoung 03-22-2008, 04:40 PM The spinning vs. non-spinning isn't really the biggest issue for me. As a certified claustrophobic, I simply can't stand it when that control panel moves into position about 8 inches from my nose! If they could have made a B side with a capsule that was twice as large I would have been happy. As it is, I won't ride either side again. But the spinning is really no big thing - go for it!
mcky fan 03-22-2008, 06:10 PM I rode the original version when it first opened. I do not have any issues with motion sickness..but when I got off that ride I felt sick. My head hurt for a few hours...I swore I would never ride it again. Then they started offering the non-spinning version..I was thrilled. The non-spinning version is so much better and you don't have to worry about feeling sick the rest of the day. Enjoy!!!
emmah 03-22-2008, 07:25 PM I rode the green side this past february and loved it - I don't have a problem with claustrophobia and I love being 'scared' but I do get sick headaches from too much spinning - the one time I rode the orange stinger at DCA I had to take the rest of the day off, I was so unwell. I love the teacups and dumbo and astro blasters because even when they are going fast, they're not that fast, but the OS really affected me so I went with green and it was completely fine - I thought it was a fun ride. Now that i am reading these comments, I am wondering if I was too cautious after all, but in my opinion, better safe than really, really sorry...
FDDK4 03-22-2008, 07:33 PM I want to thank everyone for their input. My wife and I have had fun reading them and the information will be helpful. I will let everyone know whether she decided to go on Mission: Space and what her results were. Must admit she is still very hesitant.
houseofmouse 03-22-2008, 07:50 PM To quote two of my kids: The green side is really boring!! They can spin.:)
Mom, oldest son and hubby love the green side. No one got off feeling ill, I don't think you feel too much except for take off and landing. My son and hubby cannont spin at all and the first time in 2004 they rode, before they changed to two sides and felt very sick. This time no problem for any of us. If she is claustrophobic, I agree with the others, she may want to skip it. :)
