How did Mouseplanet get started...is there a history on this site?

You know, I don't know if the "story" is written down anywhere online. Here's the very very basic version:

A long long time ago a bunch of people were reading USENET newsgroups about Disney. They arranged meets at Disney parks. The Disneyland group started meeting rather regularly at noon at the Hub on Sundays.

Many of us had fan sites, such as, oh, "Happiest Potties on Earth," the "DIG," "TAG," etc. Meanwhile, others who didn't live locally stayed in touch online and occasionally visited, for example, Brian Bennett, who had his own website with Trip Report Archives and travel guides for WDW & DL.

Over time, at meets, we talked about merging and also adding content to our collective sites. Then the talk got more serious both in person and online.

(OK, here's my favorite part of the story,) One night, a group of seven or eight of us were dining at the Olive Garden at Main Place Mall, brainstorming potential names for a merged website. One short, cute brunette mommy came up with "MousePlanet."

If I typed the rest, it wouldn't be the basic version of the story ;)

One of the things we are eventually hoping to be able to do is bring our MousePad community more into the fold by inviting some of the posters to become moderators. We haven't set up any policy yet but that will be something we'll probably be considering in the future.

I would be interested, during the winter months I am off season and just stay on the puter all the time or build my model railroad.

We now have a more formalized process to deal with persons who volunteer, or otherwise indicate interest in writing for MousePlanet. The following information is now available at the MousePlanet About page (http://www.mouseplanet.com/mp/about.htm):

"Writers

Want to write for MousePlanet? If you want to write magazine-style articles about the Disney parks and other family vacation destinations, MousePlanet is interested in hearing from you. Send email to writer-inquiries@mouseplanet.com for more information."

Sending email to this address gives you a detailed form to fill out that gives us your background, and your areas of interest.

Thanks!

There's a mailbox in Tustin that gets lonely, that's about the closest thing we have to a headquarters (except for maybe Coke Corner on Sunday afternoons).

Oh, that's easy! - on four, 6' tall shelving units, plus an 8' long shipping bench.

do you guys need writers, photographers, someone to interview people ... ? zapppop -- Unlike say your local fast food eatery, where it is obvious when there is a shortage of a french fry cook for the Saturday 9 to 5 shift, our situation at MousePlanet is a bit different. There are areas where we would love to have a regular reporter... Tokyo Disneyland is one place where I wish we had a regular LOCAL correspondent there... and as it develops, another person in Hong Kong would be great as well.

But we aren't looking to fill clean holes so much as we are always on the look-out for enthusiastic folks who may be able to bring their own personality to our team.

The first step is to send email to the writer-inquiries@mouseplanet.com address I listed earlier, so we know you're interested. We have a fairly comprehensive form we ask folks to fill out, so we can get an idea of what your interests are... but more importantly, it forces you to have to figure out exactly what it is you're interested in contributing. It's easy to say "Oh, I like to write, and I love Disneyland, so I want to write for MousePlanet!" While that's all well and good, the question boils down to, "OK, so WHAT do you want to write about?"

Most of our writers provide article-specific photos, but we also have a couple of folks who do a lot of the picture-taking. If however, you have access (and permission) to take photos at a special function, event or place that we can't get to, by all means do get a hold of us. At the very least we can run a photo essay from you as a guest contributor.
