View Full Version : Smerdel Pre-Trip Report - May 30 -June 8, 2008 - POP Century
ssmerdel 03-10-2008, 11:10 AM I have enjoyed reading so many trip reports I thought it would be fun and exciting for me to post a pre-trip report of our planned trip to WDW in May-June. Sharing these reports helps all of us relive the magic from past trips and helps you get ready for future ones. Sit back, relax and enjoy.
Disclaimer: DW is the ultimate planner of this vacation. She and I have gone over our itinerary to ensure we are doing what we will enjoy as well as the kids, but she put the days together. (I have to give her the props for all the hard work she did.)
Travel Dates: May 30th – June 8, 2008 (10 Days and 9 Nights)
Travel Method: AirTran Airlines and Disney’s Magical Express
Resort: POP Century
Accommodations: Preferred Room Location (asking for Bldg 6 or 10)
Cast of Characters:
Me (aka – Shawn) (37) – I am a Goofy, Chip & Dale, and Mickey Fan! I am also a certified Star Wars and Indiana Jones Junkie! I am addicted to ESPN and watch ATH (Around the Horn) and PTI (Pardon the Interruption) everyday and I enjoy Mike & Mike in the morning. I am also considered a POPCORN Lover since I eat it almost everyday.
DW (aka – Tina) (34) – She is a decaf coffee lover and loves to play on line (VMK) and read books - along with reading Trip Reports. She is a big Mickey & Minnie Fan and she likes to think of them being in LOVE! DW also loves all of the Princesses, and really feels for Donald. She thinks he is highly misunderstood!
DS (11) will not be 12 until November. He was a great first baby and The Best Kid Ever! He has a Nintendo DS surgically attached to his left hand and the Wii Game System attached to his utility belt! He has been a Pokemon Fan since he was 2. He also likes Star Wars and Stitch.
DD (6) will be 7 in July. She is our Princess! She is all girl, there is not an inch of tomboy in this child. She loves gymnastics and it a certified princess. We call her princess peach! Her favorite Princess is Aurora! She also has begun to have an attachment to Minnie ever since Playhouse Disney started to air, the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. We often watch this cartoon as a family.
Disney Experience:
Me (2 times: offsite in 1987, POR 2006); DW (POR 2006); DS (POR 2006); DD (POR 2006)
Until the summer of 2006, our family vacations consisted of a 2-3 day trip to a local (about 130 miles away) theme park. We would plan this type of vacation each winter/early spring and this would be our get-a-way. In the fall of 2005, I had started talking to DW about going to WDW. I have always been the spender, and her the saver. She kept telling me, that we should not spend that kind of money on a vacation. Well after several conversations, I was able to convince her to take this vacation. We booked our vacation package online in October 2005, and used our tax check to pay off the vacation and airfare. After the vacation, we were hypnotized by Disney’s Magic. We could not wait until we were able to go again. Then in August of 2007, after the rates for 2008 came out, we booked our 2008 trip. We had found the message boards here at MousePlanet and another website (I will not mention) that we really enjoyed reading. These boards have helping in planning and provided much needed information. Most of our Disney experience has come from the wonderful and knowledgeable people here.
Travel Plans:
Our travel plans are pretty simple. We will leave for the airport on the morning of May 30th around 5am. Our flight is scheduled to leave at 7:20am and gets into Orlando at 9:29am. AirTran and Southwest Air are the two cheapest airlines to fly out of Indianapolis, IN to Orlando. I watched their sites daily for about 2 months. Southwest was a little cheaper, but I went with AirTran because of schedule and we were able to pick our seats. We will then ride DME to POP. We are hoping to arrive at POP by 11:30am. In reading the message boards, I have heard good and bad DME stories. We used this service on our previous trip in 2006, and we actually enjoyed it. It was about an hour and a half total from the time we checked in, to getting to POR.
Resort Accommodations:
During our 2006 trip we stayed at POR. When we originally booked, be selected POP, but I talked DW into upgrading to POR. For this trip, DW got to choose the resort. She really wanted to stay at POP and since it is a value resort, she decided we would stay 10 days. I was all for that, so POP Century was the chosen resort and we were excited that we were returning home to our favorite place. We selected the Preferred Room Location when we booked, and then I called Reservations to request a specific location. We wanted to stay close to the main building, so I had asked for the 70’s Building, Bldg 6 or 10. I also requested the 4th floor. I also plan on calling and faxing the resort directly three days before we leave.
KTTW/Tickets:
We chose the Magic Your Way Package with Dining. We had the dining plan in 2006, and even though there are some changes (no appetizer, and tip not included) the meal plan still comes out as a better value for us. With having an 11 year old and a 6 year old, there are character meals we would like to go to that the kids will enjoy. Plus, DW and I feel like kids when we are there, so it is for us as well. We chose the Park Hopper so we could go to the different restaurants and theme parks within the same day, and the Water Parks and more option as we love playing in the water.
Stay tuned for my next installment titled: ADR’s and Our Daily Itinerary. Some questions to ponder: What park will we visit when we get there on May 30th? What will be the first ride we go on? Where will we eat?
relaaxedwheniamthere 03-10-2008, 02:15 PM you will be arriving just as the FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW @ EPCOT is winding down . you might want to give that a try.
vamassey 03-12-2008, 01:46 PM Thanks for posting, I'm enjoying your pre trip report. We went at about the same time last year and also stayed at POP. Keep watching for a discount code. Last year we got the hopper and waterparks for free add on plus it had a little discount on the room. We finally got to go to a waterpark, DisneyQuest and Pleasure Island.
ssmerdel 03-12-2008, 06:26 PM you will be arriving just as the FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW @ EPCOT is winding down . you might want to give that a try.
Thanks relaxedwheniamthere! :) My DW has plans to see the Flower and Garden Show. I will be posting my daily itineraries soon.

Thanks vamassey. I will certainly keep watching. :D
ssmerdel 03-13-2008, 10:45 AM Eating At Walt Disney World
After we had paid our deposit in August, we began to research where we wanted to go and what we wanted to eat. There were several factors that had to be considered when choosing an eatery. They were:
I do not like seafood and I am allergic to shellfish, but DW, DS, and DD do like seafood. (If you have seen the movie Hitch with Will Smith that is all I am going to say about me and shellfish.) I get puffy and swollen.
We also wanted to try different restaurants than our last trip but return to a few of our favorites.
Try to eat more healthy options and more indoor eateries for DS since he got sick on the last trip. We were not sure if DS sickness was the heat, the food at Sci-fi, or a virus. We have also included Children's Pepto Chewable Tables on this trip. The Indoor Eateries are to get out of the heat more often and rest for a few.
We would also like to do a dining review. So we are going to take pictures and carry a small notebook in our park bag.
On November 30, 2007, we reached our 180 days + 10 to make our ADR’s. Before I left for the office that morning, I called the reservation line and made all of our ADR’s. Calling exactly when we needed to, we were able to get all the restaurants and times we wanted. I do recommend this for everyone who likes to plan their meals.
ADR’s made for TS Meals:
Le Cellier
Boma
Whispering Canyon Café – I cannot wait to ask for ketchup. Actually, I am going to have my DS do it. The video camera will be rolling for this.
Liberty Tree Tavern
Chef Mickey’s - Had breakfast here but would like to try Dinner
Breakfast at Ohanas’
Cape May Café
1900 Park Fare (Cinderella’s Gala Feast)
Breakfast at Crystal Palace- this is our traditional last day breakfast.
Dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern and breakfast at Crystal Palace are the two places we had eaten at during our first trip and we really enjoyed them. All the other locations are new places for us to try. We are really looking forward to Whispering Canyon Café, Le Cellier and Boma. We have heard many great reviews about these restaurants.
CS Meals and Snacks:
Everything Pop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at some point
Cosmic Ray’s
Casey’s Corner
Beaches and Cream (Really want the Kitchen Sink)
Harambe Fruit Market and Kusafiri Bakery
Flaming Tree BBQ
Lottawatta Lodge - We will be at Blizzard Beach
Breakfast at Polynesian: Captain Jacks - Try Tonga Toast
Pinocchio Village Haus - Try Figaro Fries
Typhoon Tilly’s - We will be at Typhoon Lagoon
Toy Story Pizza Plant
Catalina Eddies/Toluca Turkey Legs
Cantina de San Angel – Wet Burrito & Churro
Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe – Kringla Sweet Pretzel & Viking Coffee
Liberty Inn – Indoor Eatery
Boulangerie Patisserie – Pastries
Yorkshire County Fish Shop – try the fish & chips
These are the locations where there is a yummy snack or CS meal where we would like to eat. I am sure these could possibly change during our vacation depending on where we are and what we are doing.
Day 1 Itinerary – Friday, May 30th
Fly to Walt Disney World – arrival is around 9:30am.
Arrive at POP Century by DME around 11:30am – Noon.
Check-In (room may or may not be ready) and Pick up our KTTW cards.
Have lunch at Everything Pop Dining (DW wants to try the Steak Wrap and Kids want to try the Cheese Fries and get Icees). We plan on purchasing refillable mugs.
Then, it is off to Magic Kingdom! - (Note: DW and I have decided that going to MK on our first day, will be a tradition for us.) The Park Hours are: 9am – 11pm and there is Evening EMH that night.
First thing we want to do is find a Photo Pass Photographer. We want to try Photo Pass this time. In 2006, we only got one photo of our family and we feel Photo Pass will be a good way to achieve this.
Below are the attractions we would like to get in on this day:
Mickey’s Philharmagic - This is one of our Favorite attractions at the Magic Kingdom.
BTMRR
Splash Mountain
Haunted Mansion
Pirates of the Caribbean - In 2006 this attraction was being updated, so we could not ride it.
I do believe Dole Whips are in this area - We would like to try a Dole Whip! They sound so good.
Railroad (All the way around) - DD loves to ride railroad trains.
Tiki Room - We have not seen this attraction and would like to. We think of attractions like this as a nice way to relax and sit for a while.
Liberty Square Riverboat - In 2006 this attraction was being refurbished. DD & DS are really excited about taking a boat ride.
Tom Sawyer Island
Monster Inc. Laugh Floor - New attractions for us! This was not open in 2006
Dream Along with Mickey - New Show for us! In 2006, it was Cinderellabration!
Dinner at Cosmic Ray’s and Casey’s Corner:
We would like to eat at Cosmic Ray's because it is an indoor eatery and we can get out of the heat and we are going to stop by Casey's Corner to get DD Corn Dog Nuggets because she will enjoy these!
Wishes Fireworks Show – 10pm (We are going to try to get Wishes in this night but I do not know if we will.)
I would also like to stay for the evening EMH on this night. DW would also like to try but thinks DD & DS will be too tired. We will have to see.
This is all for now. Day 2 and Day 3 will be my next post. I hope everyone enjoys this.
ssmerdel 03-20-2008, 09:08 AM Day 2 Itinerary - Saturday, May 31
Park: Epcot – Future World
Future World Hours: 9am – 7pm
World Showcase: 11am – 9pm
DW wants to sleep in on our first full day at WDW. There is no way that is happening. I love getting to the park at Rope Drop, plus, our DS (11) and DD (6) will be up at the crack of dawn. I want to experience the parks when they first open, as suggested in the Unofficial Guide to Disney 2008, and from what I have read here on the boards.
Below are the attractions we would like to get in on this day:
Soarin’ - Grab a Fast Pass for Soarin’
Test Track
Nemo and Friends
Turtle Talk with Crush
Living with the Land
Honey I shrunk the Audience
Figment
Mission Space - Green Team
Circle of Life
Ellen’s Energy Adventure
Innoventions East & West - Try all the different Sodas from around the world, I think this is where, if it is not please let me know.
Meals for the day:
A light breakfast at POP which might include fruit & cereal, but realistically it will develop into pancakes and such. DD and I cannot go too long without pancakes or we start having withdrawal symptoms. DS will want some type of bacon or sausage.
Then we are off to have an early lunch at Beaches & Cream. I requested this restaurant, because I have heard so much about this place on the boards. We are going to share cheeseburgers and fries/onion rings, and then we ARE having dessert. I am pulling for the Kitchen Sink. I think that would be so awesome to have. DW wants the No Way Jose or the Classic Banana Split. Please, please tell my wife the Kitchen Sink is the way to go!!!!!
For dinner we made an ADR for Le Cellier at 7pm. Again, we have heard so much about this place that we wanted to try it. As you will begin to notice, a big part of our vacation experience is food. We have looked over every menu and know what we are going to have. But do not hold us to that, as things could change. This is what we are currently going to have:
I will probably get the New York Strip Steak and the Campfire S'mores. (We actually make these at home in the microwave for the kids.)
DW wants to try the Ice Wine. She will also get the Mushroom Filet Mignon and the Chocolate Moose.
DD will get the Kid's Hot Dog and an Ice Cream Sundae.
DS (Adult menu because of DDP) will probably get the filet, chicken, or shrimp & scallops - he will definitely get the Campfire S'mores.
After Le Cellier we are going to stick around for Illuminations – 9pm
Day 3 - Sunday, June 1, 2008
Park: Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom Hours: 9am – 8pm
We did not spend much time here in 2006, because DS was sick the night before. We are really excited to get to know Animal Kingdom Park! We hope that we can explore this park all day without an afternoon break since we did not get much time in during our first trip. Most days, we have built in breaks so the kids can rest and not get worn out. We have planned a lot of sit down shows to keep them off their feet as well.
Below are the attractions we would like to get in on this day:
Kilimanjaro Safaris
It’s Tough to be a Bug
Festival of the Lion King
Discovery Island Trail
Camp Minnie Mickey
Rafiki’s Planet Watch
Kali River Rapids - I want to wear a poncho on this ride!
Expedition Everest
Finding Nemo the Musical
Primeval Whirl
Triceratops Spin
Dinosaur
Meals for the day:
Breakfast at Animal Kingdom – Tusker House Restaurant – This is a fairly new Character Breakfast we thought the kids would enjoy, as well as ourselves.
Lunch at Flaming Tree BBQ – We did eat lunch here in 2006 and really enjoyed it.
For dinner, we have an ADR for Boma at 8:10pm. We will leave AK at 6pm and head over to AKL to do some exploring and take some pictures before dinner. We want to check out the AKL for future stays at WDW.
I hope you have enjoyed our planned Day 2 and Day 3 at WDW. I will post Days 4, 5, and 6 very soon. Thanks again for coming along on our journey before we actually go. Feel free to offer any insights or suggestions.
chrissyd 03-21-2008, 11:00 AM Sounds like you're having a great time planning-I always find that it's half the fun. I also am allergic to all shellfish. In each restaurant just let them know--at Kona the chef actually came out and went over the menu with me, and assured me that my meal would be cooked on a separate grill from everyone else's :) Have a great time!

Planning is so much fun. It builds up the anticipation of going. DW and I do it together and we include the kids. This way all are excited. :) I just wish I had more time to complete this Pre-trip report. I hope to post more by the end of the week.
vamassey 03-27-2008, 05:36 AM Last year we spent Memorial Day in Epcot and had dinner at Le Cellier. We loved it but didn't make it to Illuminations. It was just so hot that day that after dinner we headed out. We had to take mid day rests due to the heat so be prepared.
ssmerdel 03-27-2008, 09:31 AM We had to take mid day rests due to the heat so be prepared.
We cannot wait to eat at Le Cellier. We have heard so much about it, my mouth starts watering just thinking about it. I hope we are not disappointed. DW and I really want to try the Ice Wine, cheese soup and the pretzel bread. And of course a nice steak to wash all that down. :)
Even though my trip report does not show breaks, we plan on taking them. We were not able to go a whole day during our first trip in 2006, so we know that it will probably be the same this time. Fortunately, we only had one majot breakdown by DD, after Wishes. Since they are older, we hope that will help. But they are kids.
vamassey 03-27-2008, 02:45 PM Pretzel bread was great, cheese soup was too salty. I had the mushroom filet and I loved it.
ssmerdel 03-28-2008, 08:18 AM Day 4 Itinerary – Monday, June 2
Park: Blizzard Beach
Hours: 9am – 7pm
During our first trip to WDW we had only gone to Typhoon Lagoon, so for this trip we planned on doing both water parks, but wanted to start with Blizzard Beach. We are going to get breakfast at the resort (Pop Century) and then make our way over to the water park.
Below are the attractions we would like to experience:
Chairlift to Teamboat Springs - Family Raft Ride
Toboggan Racers, Snow Stormers, and Downhill Double-Dipper
Runoff Rapids
Melt-away Bay
Cross Country Creek
Ski Patrol Training Camp
Tikes Peak for DD
Meals for the day:
Again, we plan to have breakfast at Pop Century.
For lunch we plan to eat at Blizzard Beach - Lottawatta Lodge. This is provided we stay that long. We usually only last about 4 hours at a water park, so we may leave and eat lunch somewhere else. We have tentatively scheduled ourselves to leave BB around 1pm and go back to Pop to clean up. Then, it is off to DTD for shopping and exploring.
We are really excited about dinner. We are going to leave DTD around 5:30pm and hop on the bus to the Wilderness Lodge for our ADR at Whispering Canyon Café. We plan on exploring this resort and taking some pictures while we are there. I have told my son that something really special happens when you ask for ketchup. I have heard what happens, and he has no idea, so this is going to be hilarious. I plan on having the video camera rolling for this. I also plan on asking for more soda. I cannot wait this is going to be so cool.
Day 5 Itinerary – Tuesday, June 3
Park: Magic Kingdom
Hours: 9am – 11pm with morning extra magic hours
We are going to get up and head over to the Poly: Captain Cook’s for breakfast so we can try the Tonga Toast. We have heard so much about it on the boards and it sounds so yummy, that we had to make some time for this. We plan to be there between 6:30 & 7am, because we want to make the morning extra magic hours.
Below are the attractions we hope to experience on this day:
Small World (for DD)
Peter Pan Flights
Snow White Scary Adventure
The Many Adventures of Winnie Pooh
Mad Tea Party
Jungle Cruise
Magic Carpets of Aladdin
Splash Mountain
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Haunted Mansion
Minnie and Mickey’s Country House
Goofy’s Barnstormer

Meals for the day:
Breakfast will be at Captain Cook’s at the Poly. Tonga Toast he we come!
DW wants to have lunch at Pinocchio Village Haus and try the Figaro Fries. Plus it has inside seating, so we can get out of the heat and relax while eating.
For dinner we have an ADR for The Liberty Tree Tavern. We actually ate here during our first trip in June 2006 and just loved it. Chip and Dale were hilarious as they took two children’s lightsabers and were fighting in the restaurant. They would also pick and pull on each other. They were so funny. The food was delicious and again it was out of the heat.
Depending on what we were able to do during our first day at MK and also what we were able to do on this day, will determine if we head back to the resort after dinner or if we will stay in the MK till close. The mood of the kids will also determine this.
Day 6 Itinerary – Wednesday, June 4
Park: Typhoon Lagoon
Hours: 9am – 7pm
Below are the attractions we hope to experience:
Ketchakiddee Creek
Castaway Creek
Gangplank Falls - Family Raft Ride

Humunga Kowabunga Slides
Meals for the day:
Breakfast at Pop Century

We will leave Epcot around 6pm and head over to the Contemporary for our ADR at Chef Mickey’s. After dinner, we plan on returning to our resort to hang out, explore and swim.
Stay tuned for Days 7 & 8……………
jillybeaner21 04-04-2008, 12:50 PM i love reading your trip planning. I just booked a trip for my best friend and I in May and reading your pre-report is making me even more excited!!
You will LOVE Boma!! There are so many fun and new things to try! My family and I really enjoyed it the last time we went. Also Cape May Cafe is a HUGE favorite of my families. We go every trip. I think you're daughter will enjoy the "kids section" of the buffet. It's lower down so it's at their height and everything is mini. Mini hot dogs, mini pizzas, etc.
ENJOY!!
shawn and tina (and family)
we (family of 3) will be at pop May28-June7. it would be nice to run across you during that time.

Sounds great! :)
I, too, have a trip booked in May for Pop Century with my girlfriend, but May 5-14. I will be posting a pre-trip report very soon, although it is not nearly as detailed as yours. If I had more time, I probably would, but my girlfriend and I are opposites when it comes to vacations. I like to plan every little detail and she likes to wing it when we get there, so we compromise. :)
Enjoy your trip!

Finally, after eating and waiting we will enjoy Fantasmic. One of our favorite shows.
Day 8 Itinerary – Friday, June 6
:)This is going to be, hopefully one of the best days of the trip. It is our Mommy/Daughter and Daddy/Son Day. We are really excited about this day.
Mommy/Daughter Plans:
DW and DD will have an early breakfast at POP. After breakfast, they plan to grab a bus to MK and DD has an 8am ressie for the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Cinderella’s Castle. After this, they are going to the Exposition Hall for a photo shoot and then it is off to the Grand Floridian for the My Disney Girl Perfectly Princess Tea Party at the Garden View Room. After the Tea, they may go to World Showcase in Epcot.
Daddy/Son Plans:
DS and I are going to wing it. We will either have breakfast at POP or go to the McDonald’s at DTD. After breakfast, we are going to hang out in DTD until DisneyQuest Interactive opens. Both DS and I are gamers, so this is going to be fun for us. After a few hours in here, we are either going to rent a Sea Raycer or play Miniature Golf. It will really depend on what DS wants to do.
After our separate ventures and exploration, we are going to meet for dinner at 1900 Park Fare (Cinderella’s Gala Feast) at 7pm.
Day 9 Itinerary – Saturday, June 7
Park: Disney’s Hollywood Studios (DHS) – Star Wars Weekend
Hours: 9am – 9pm
DS and I want to attend Star Wars weekend. He and I may go to this park for a while and it check out. DW and DD are not into Star Wars so they may go back to Epcot for the World Showcase. This is also a day, where we may go to any given park to ride something we may have missed or to ride something we really want to ride again.
The only thing scheduled for this day is our dinner at Cape May Café at 7pm.
Day 10 Itinerary – Sunday, June 8
This is our departure day. :crying:We fly out at 6:20pm, so we are going to Magic Kingdom for our remaining time before DME picks us up at POP. We have a Crystal Palace ressie at 8:20am. After this, we plan to let DS and DD ride Dumbo and any other ride before we have to leave. We also plan on getting snacks to take with us for our flight home.
:crying:We will be so sad to leave our favorite place. As I stated above, our flight leaves MCO at 6:20pm and we get back in to Indianapolis at 8:40pm.
Next up...Packing...and our travel party increasing by 2.
