View Full Version : WDW Scares me!
91wingnut 03-05-2008, 09:24 AM When you were a kid (or maybe even now), what ONE THING scared you the most at WDW? I'll start:
I've been asked to explain The Homage to the Hairy Legand explain why me 'bro Mikey and I pay homage to it as The Grand Symbol of Disneydom.
When we were but little (little Ogres?) tykes (7 and 4yrs), we went to WDW when it first opened. Dad teased us all day about being brave enough to go on the pirates. Afterall, if we didn't behave ourselves, they would grab us out of the boats and keep us!! Then it happened, as we got to the end of the POC ride the boats backed up and we stopped right under the bridge with the pirate on top enjoying his rum. His hairy leg dangled right above our heads. Wow was it hairy, and look at the mud on his feet! Hey, did his leg move? I think it did! Will that mud splat on us? He's looking right at us! Is he gonna grab us out of the boat? Is he going to jump down here with us!!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
To this day when we ride the POC, I remember that day like it was yesterday. Now we pay homage to the leg that still captivates us to this day, and yes, I've told that same story that my Dad told us to my two boys and Mikey's two. To see their eyes as we approach the Hairy Leg is worth it all........Hey did that leg move???:eek::eek:
Drince88 03-05-2008, 09:49 AM I have to say, I think of you two every time I go under that leg (in either park). Glad to hear the whole background story!
My first visit to either park was in junior high, and first WDW when I was 17 - so not much that really 'scared' me there. Well, aside from some of the other guests!
I was pretty scared the first time I rode Mission:Space, though! And that was before they had the "Protein Spill" bags in the capsules!
The youngest nephew I've been to a park with in this century (3 at the time) was VERY scared of Aladin's Carpets. Couldn't quite figure that one out. And the youngest nephew in the previous century (almost 3 at the time) "Didn't Like" Spaceship Earth, but I don't think he was particularly scared of it. We thought BTMRR might be too much for him (he was/is tall - about 6'5" now) but he loved it and wanted to go again.
wed@wdw 03-05-2008, 10:28 AM Wingnut, I always think of you & Mike as I pass under the leg. I usually chuckle thinking of you guys paying homage. :D
As a kid I was terrified of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I remember being in the sub and feeling totally claustrophobic.:( Too bad that they aren't still around so I can see if it's really as bad as I remember.
Nala27 03-05-2008, 11:22 AM The favorite part of POC for my sister and I since we were kids is the hairy leg! LOL! Its so real looking........and being able to see the mud - that just clinched it for us.
After I got home from WDW last year with my family, upon telling my sister that my DH and I went on POC she asked me "Did you see the leg?" :)
anniedg 03-05-2008, 11:39 AM Scariest thing at WDW? Hands down Alien Encounter, yikes!!
Now Stitch's Great Escape is scary too, but for a whole different reason.
Fun to finally hear the Legend of the Hairy Leg :p
carolinakid 03-05-2008, 01:15 PM I was really scared of the Evil Queen/Old Hag in the Snow White atraction (just the way she unexpectedly popped out at you) when I first rode it at the age of 7. I didn't ride Snow White for several years after. Now it's always a must do for me. However, even to this day I find the caves on Tom Sawyer's Island really creepy and I only go in them if I'm with others! Some idiot years ago jumped out at me thinking I was someone in his party and it's bothered me ever since!
jengold29 03-05-2008, 01:21 PM The end of the Haunted Mansion when you pick up your "hitch-hikers" scared the living daylights out of me when I was 8. My sister (who was 6) and I almost jumped out of the doombuggy to get to our parents who were riding with our 3 year old sister.
Ahhh. . . good times.;)
anniedg 03-05-2008, 01:33 PM even to this day I find the caves on Tom Sawyer's Island really creepy
My youngest was scared to death of the cave. We have an adorable picture of him when he was 4 waiting at the cave's exit peering in nervously wondering if his father and brothers were going to make it out alive!
He was scared to go on just about everything in those days though. He carried around a pail full of little toys to play with while his brothers rode. We did a lot of trading off back then.
Finz729 03-05-2008, 01:57 PM Listen, I have seen Modern Marvels about how they make AA creatures. I've specifically seen what those big robotic dinos look like under the foam and latex. But every time I ride Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom, that Carnotaurus scares the crud outta me!
I know it's not real. I know it's just a big machine under the control of intelligent computer systems. But as soon as he appears, I'm like a 6 year old kid again and that dude scares me to death. I spend the whole ride reminding myself "You're at Disney World, he's not real! You're at Disney World, he's not going to eat you!"
And I'm almost 33 years old!!!
KJSJpipe 03-05-2008, 02:30 PM There are things to see in the Dinosaur ride? Hmmm, I don't recall anything after the first ten seconds.... could have been that my eyes were all but glued shut by then!! Hated that ride and I was 33/34 on my first and only ride!
tdelaney_98 03-05-2008, 06:05 PM Test Track. Yep! After the ride was over, we were going through the gift shop and they had a test track dummy up on a counter. We thought we'd do a photo op and I cozied up to it. As the shutter was snapped, the dummy grabbed me. I didn't know it was a CHARACTER! I screamed like a teenager and about peed my pants. I was 30!
I hate Dinosaur too. I keep my eyes shut the entire time. I've only ridden it twice. If someone wants to go on it, I will, but I'll be eyes wide shut the whole time!
91wingnut 03-05-2008, 06:13 PM Wow there have been alot of great responses. I love Finz's explanation; I've done the same thing on Dinosaur! Of course they're only robots, but they get me every time! I'd have to agree that stitch and dino are the two scariest now. I love the haunted mansion mention! I forgot how scary the end was when one of the "boys" went home with you! That's scary stuff for a 7yr old.
As for scaring my 'bro Mikey, well, I am the older brother. So when I figured out the pirates weren't real people and weren't going to grab us off the boats, it was only natural that I kept torturing my brother to scare the beegeebeez out of him as long as I could till he figured it out!!
Nowadays we share the same fear: that when we are in France, we will see the pastry counter void of Schocolatte Moussse or worse yet a "closed for renovation" sign over La Patisserrie!:fez::eek::fez:
Terri 03-05-2008, 07:17 PM I haven't been to WDW yet (will be there 8/3!) but at Disneyland...I remember growing up and just walking by the haunted mansion years before it opened. They did the outside first and then it seemed like it took YEARS to complete the actual ride. We were so scared of that building - we knew it was really haunted! It just sat there. A big house. mysterious and shrouded in mystery. Awesome.
My son? This is great. He was TERRIFIED of the abomidable snowman in the materhorn. He wouldn't go back on that ride for years because of the red eyes. He's 14 now, loves the ride and to this day I tease him about the snowman. I can't wait for him to see the Yeti!!!
foolishmortal 03-05-2008, 07:47 PM I've never been to WDW, but At DL I was terrified of the old sky way bucket! I was sure that thing was going to break off its wire and we'd pulmet to our doom!!! I think I was 5 the first time I rode that thing I spent the whole time sitting in the bottom of the bucket! My cousin Linda and my dad tried to swing it a little bit until I let out the ear shattering scream! You know the Kind only dogs and other little kids can hear!!!!! I STILL hate ski lifts and any sky way type buckets!!!!
Now at 38 I hate TOT! went on that thing and came off white and chilled to the bone,(with in 95degrees out)!!!! :eek:I hate elevators they scare the life out of me! I went in the one in the World trade center when I was 18 (1987myfirends had to sit on me to keep me from freaking out! So as you can tell TOT is not the ride for me! I am forced on that ride by my 9yr dd she loves that thing! MOmmy just holds on for dear life and screams!! AND we always get the one with the 5 drops too! *Blach*
cheshirecatgirl 03-06-2008, 05:13 AM What scares me? Definitely the Carnotaurs on Dinosaur! Especially the one at the very end. Also, that moment of pause right before the first drop on tower of Terror. Once I actually drop, I'm good! Oh, and I'm still nervous on Everest when you get to the part with the broken track!
danyoung 03-06-2008, 06:39 AM ...just walking by the haunted mansion years before it opened. They did the outside first and then it seemed like it took YEARS to complete the actual ride.
Your memory is good - it DID take years for the ride to open. The outside was completed in the early 60's, but the resources of WED (the Imagineers) was diverted to the attractions showing at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. The attraction didn't open for business till 1969. I was 13 that first summer, and was pleasurably terrified by all the spooks, noises, & stuff jumping out at me!

wow...did it really open in 1969? I spent so much time in the park that all my trips kind of blend together. But that explains why I was so freaked by the building. I turned 10 in '69! Some good times at DL in the 60's & 70's!!!
brazen wench 03-06-2008, 07:47 AM In November, 1994 I rode the Tower of Terror for the first time, and its single drop basically shook me to the core. I still remember how scared I was when I got off, and also, just where I was standing as my husband tried for 10 minutes to persuade me to ride again. Despite ToT's obvious greatness, there was nothing doing--I couldn't bring myself to try again that trip.
Looking back, I really regret chickening out. It took me years to get back to WDW, and by that time ToT was changed to the multiple sequence. Now I can ride over and over, but I'd love the chance to do the single drop again. I hope some day WDW brings it back, even if temporarily. I'd make a trip just for that.
mzloolue 03-07-2008, 09:25 AM Wingnut, I always think of you & Mike as I pass under the leg. I usually chuckle thinking of you guys paying homage. :D

I never went to WDW as a kid.
It wasn't there!
(Which is actually pretty scary)
But I did ride the submarines as a young adult and it was smelly and claustrophobic.
I also think of certain people now when I pass under the hairy leg.
bellefan 03-07-2008, 12:09 PM My first memory of WDW is actually a scary one! I remember being on Haunted Mansion with my dad and being so scared (not sure which part - probably the whole thing) that I spent most of the ride buried in his lap. My dad passed when I was 16 and now I go on Haunted Mansion every time as homage to him. Its not as scary anymore. ;)
I think it was the monorails for me. I'm a pretty paranoid person and I seem to always think stuff can go wrong, and I always thought if someone was standing right at the doors when it was full it would tip over!
I'm actually still a little weary of that :p But now I'm older I know it wont happen just cause someone is stood at the doors.
NJ Mike 03-10-2008, 08:24 AM What scares me the most on a disney world vacation?
NO ROOM SERVICE! :eek::eek::eek: :~D
Just kidding.
Yeah the pirates still kind of freak me out if we go on and NOBODY else is on (empty boats as far as you can see). That makes me feel a little weird. Kind of like a bad horror movie. I keep waiting for one of them to jump out and be a real person with a knife lol.
Speaking of knives, you know what even as an adult freaked me out? If anything looked like it was gonna pull you behind a bush and stab you (nice Disney image huh?) it was those freaky looking dudes in the Spectromagic parade. Not the ones playing the horns (although they looked the same), but the ones riding on the giant spinning things. They just looked evil to me lol.
The biggest thing I think that would scare the average passerby is the mountain of empty mousse cups on our table after tom and I make a mousse run. One little kid thought it was a new matterhorn ride and asked where the fastpass line was. ;) :D:D:D:D
rashiz 03-10-2008, 09:50 AM Its funny because I can't really remember being scared of anything in WDW when I went the first time I was seven...but I was terrified of the creepy offsite motel we stayed at.
Later trips got scare points for Alien Encounter when it first opened, and Countdown to Extinction (Dinosaur) when it opened. Tower of Terror also gets scare points but just for the drop, the rest of the ride I don't recall because I was prepping and afraid of that drop.
