View Full Version : What is too pregnant to enjoy the parks?
oohykitten 02-27-2008, 06:03 PM I am not sure if this is the correct board, so if this gets moved...sorry!
I am just curious who here has gone to the parks pregnant and how far along. I need to go in April (yes need :) ) and have a few concerns. Also I would LOVE to ride Space Mt...as would my husband...he said he could finally get to go to the left. :D But I know those rides are off the list.
partyoffive 02-27-2008, 06:18 PM No such thing as too pregnant ;) - seriously - I did it at 8 months - not a big deal - actually it was HEAVEN dropping down to sea level (I live at 8,000 feet) I never felt winded and had so much energy! It was great! Just take lots of bathroom breaks and drink lots of water!
evilqueento2 02-27-2008, 07:01 PM I went when I was five months pregnant with DS. A couple of things to take into consideration. There is alot of salt in the food at Disneyland( and anywhere you eat out). I packed shredded wheat and fruit for breakfast and ate in the hotel, we were at Paradise Pier and they have a fridge. I also brought in a couple healthy snacks in our backpack. I got fresh fruit and juice in Adventureland and there is another stand like that on a walkway I think going towards Critter country, there is also one on Main Street, their cold grapes and pineapple are awesome at these stands. I still had quite a bit
of swelling in my feet at the end of the day. I was pretty cautious with the rides, the scariest thing that happened was on pirates. We got bumped HARD on the end of the ride, where the chains are pulling you up. It actually cramped me up or a while and I have never ever had a problem like that. so be careful, sometimes you just don't know what can happen. Trust your judgement and have a terrific trip! :D
DisneyFamilyOf6 02-27-2008, 07:21 PM I've gone at 8mos as well, the worst thing and hardest was the drive there. Other than that I was fine. Have fun!
Mrs Mouse 02-27-2008, 08:35 PM You need Yohomama in this thread! She would be a great source of information - if I remember correctly, she was at DL all throughout her pregnancy, and it always sounded like she had a blast.
I think the biggest thing to remember is just to know your limits. Take as many breaks as you need, drink lots and lots of water and just enjoy yourself!! I know that if I live close enough to DL when I'm pregnant, I'll be there with bells on! :D

If I am not mistaken, she was at Disneyland ON her due date! (Maybe she was at the Pirates movie on the due date...)
adriennek 02-27-2008, 08:46 PM I did DLR for (thinking in my brain,) 31-33 months of pregnancy.
Define "enjoy the parks"?
I enjoyed the parks through all 33 months and in addition there were months that I was trying to get pregnant that I "acted as if" because if I WAS pregnant, I wasn't risking it by riding Indiana Jones or any other off limits ride.
Don't regret a moment of it and I enjoyed it all.
I know I went well into my pregnancies. This picture was taken (http://www.mouseplanet.com/archive/ma042901team.jpg) 11 days before Sman was born. I know I went closer to delivery than that, but that's the closest to delivery picture I have online. (I have this picture online, too (http://www.mpimages.net/mp/compressed/mouseadventure/spring_2004/staff.jpg) but that one was a full 30 days before Cman was born - but he was late so it was closer than 30 days to my due date.)
It shouldn't be too hot in April, but take it easy. Drink lots of water. Stop and rest if you need to. Those are the two basics to keep pre-term contractions away. (Note: I am not a medical professional. I have never been a medical professional. This is not medical advice, this is "what I learned when I was pregnant and what I did because I had a RNP case manager to help avoid pre-term labor or complications with my first pg.)
How far along will you be? How far is your hospital from DLR? If you're going to be within 2-3 weeks of your due date and your hospital is far away, you might want to ask your doctor or midwife. My hospital was only 30 minutes away without traffic, 1 - 2 hours with traffic, but I also had really long labors  and there was a hospital 15 minutes from the park if I realllly couldn't make it home.
ETA: I just read the "Bay Area" - I'd ask your doctor before making plans, based on how far along you'll be.

oohykitten 02-27-2008, 11:12 PM Thank you SO much for your comments! I am still hoping to be inspired with a Disney name for this son. I will be 33 weeks pregnant and delivered at 35/36/38 weeks before so I think I should be OK. I just want to take my youngest to see Playhouse Disney...let him enjoy a quick trip down before he is a big brother (he is 18 months old now) I have gone on Space Mt prengnat before but I know that one is out that close to my due date. ;)
Now I guess I just need to find a name for this guy and I should be set to go!
Malcon10t 02-28-2008, 07:50 AM I have gone on Space Mt prengnat before but I know that one is out that close to my due date. ;)!According to my OB when I was pregnant, it was actually more dangerous at the beginning of the pregnancy (mos 1-5.) There is a reason for the signs saying pregnant women shouldn't ride. It's not that Disneyland doesn't want pregnant people to enjoy themselves...
And a hint, if you get tired, or ankles swell, the First Aid Center is a great place to relax for a few.
Since you tend to go into premature labor (something my body never figured out.... Overdue by 2-4 weeks isn't fun) run this by your doc.
dutchess13 02-28-2008, 09:51 AM I've been in early pregnancy several times and am planning a spring break trip and will be 22 weeks along. My doctor says speed is not an issue but jerking back and forth, side to side, sudden stops etc. is. For that reason I go on space mountain since its smooth but not matterhorn or indiana jones- you get the idea. My ob says the opposite of the advice above that up to 22 is fine, after that you need to use more caution, but that for the most part the only reason not to is for your comfort, not the babies saftey. Think about it- you drive a lot faster than the rides actually go. But your pretty far along I'd ask your doctor before risking anything.
Does anyone have any anti swelling advice except cutting out salt? I'm gonna need it!
Also- do the CM say anything if your noticably pregnant and try to board a ride that's unadviced? I hate to be embarrased but I have my doctors permission.

Anti-swelling - talk to your OB. Mine let me take a low-grade ibuprofen, which helped. I also rented an electric scooter to get around - less pressure on my feet.
The CMs I encountered did not say anything to me at all. I went when I was almost 7 months pregnant with my daughter. The only ride I did that was not advised was Soaring - because it was brand new (to me) and some people I knew who had kids had been on it and said they could not see why it could be bad for pregnancy. My OB also said she thought it would be safe. (I think because of the motion, it might cause sickness for those susceptible). The CM didn't say a word - and I doubt that they would.
1tiggerfan 02-28-2008, 11:24 AM I went when 8 1/2 months pregnant, was just waiting in the autopia line with my DH and DD and the CM asked if I was (and I OBVIOUSLY was, LOL) and told me I couldn't ride.
oohykitten 02-28-2008, 01:58 PM My OB knows that I am a Disney person and so is he. He is more concerned about the walking and drinking my water (his lectures have gotten the hubby to get the grand a few times for our trips) He knows Space means the world to me. Plus as he said its the smoothest ride there now. I just know I can't waddle up in line and ride it.

anti-swelling: drink lots of water, take lots of breaks and elevate those feet.
As far as unadvised rides...even with a Drs. ok...I personally wouldn't risk it. I would never forgive myself if something happened. Disneyland will always be there....go on the crazy rides next time.
nursechrissy32 02-28-2008, 04:21 PM Hi :) Neonatal ICU nurse here.....
I am not going to completely lecture, but will agree with all others in saying that the rides will always be there...I am as well a high risk delivery nurse, have delivered infants 25 weeks and above....33-38 weeks are the most important growing weeks for the lungs. Infants who are born premature within 33-38 weeks often times deal with feeding intolerances, occasionally will deliver under a stressfull situation with passgage of meconium in a stressed delivery can mean many, many very serious even life threatening complications. I know that it seems silly to think that a ride like space is bad for a pregnant woman, or a person with back injuries etc (the warning poster...) if you get a moment of high blood pressure, coupled with lots of walking, high salt foods and your past history of early deliveries...HELLO lady havin a baby on Main Street amidst the sights and smells of my favorite place in the whole world...hmm not such a bad idea after all? Just kidding of course...best place for baby...baking until done.
I say to absolutely enjoy the sweet, slow things of Disneyland...space mountain things like that...I would definately advice, very strongly against going on rides of that nature. There are so many things to do in the park that are safe for you and your baby.

disneyjunkie 02-28-2008, 09:31 PM DD went all the time through both of her pregnancys. She just didnt do the intense ( spc mt, indiana, matterhorn, tower of terror rides etc...) but she still felt that getting out and walking the park beat sitting home and loved that most of her food cravings ( Churros churros churros, goofys kitchen, churros...) could be satisified there. Also it was easier to take her first one who was under two to the park and ride the small rides ( carousel, small world, dark rides ...) than chasing him around the house all day. She also had an AP at the time so it was like going to the park ( the REAL PARK) . She did have one incident of early contractions with her first prego after a full long day there and the info kiosh outside in the esplande directed her to the handicap tram area where they ended up getting a shuttle cart to take us to the parking structure so she didnt have to walk back, they even went so far as to letting her hubby go up and get the car and let us stay in the cart and get her there. Now that they live in nocal my oldest grandson still ask at least once a week to go to DL.

My sister works NICU. She agrees 100 percent.
Malcon10t 02-29-2008, 08:32 AM It's amazing problems that are there that we really don't think about. Most people think "Autopia is safe!" But, what about when you get that person behind you who thinks it is a riot to ram you, even though the rules say Don't! And the fumes! I never noticed them til MDM chewed Escape Artist for revving the engine and making the exhaust go in her car (she is severe asthmatic.)
Space mountain, yeah, its fairly smooth since the change, until you E-Stop. Soarin was the only one I could never figure out their reasoning on, but since the removed the warning, I will assume it was more for nausea.

As a general rule, I have dh drive behind me on this attraction. The forces of someone ramming into me is not fun. I'm not asthmatic, so I can't comment on the exhaust other than to say that yes it can be bothersome.

Holy cow! I had no idea I was so popular! Yup, I went a lot from 4mos on until my due date. My due date was the same day POTC3 came out in the theaters and they opened Pirates' Lair at TSI. I went to the midnight show of POTC3 and in the morning some things started happening that got us all excited so I got my nails done and went to DL. Walked aroud TSI with the big kids and waited it out. That was a Friday, Hannah came on the Monday.
I was about 3mos preg with DS when a friend talked me into going onto Space Mountain. I didn't know I was preg then but if I had known, I wouldn't have gone. There's no reason to risk it, IMO.
The only thing I didn't do then that I do now is take DS on Star Tours. We're really not roller coaster types (DS and I) so the other "no go" rides were fine by me. I loved being able to take him on his first ride on Star Tours and he likes that that's our ride.
Good luck and if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!

He's such a fine brother.
When are you too pregnant to enjoy the parks?
When you spend more time worrying than you do enjoying.
Relax. The parks will still be there after the baby is born.

oohykitten 03-07-2008, 08:48 AM Thank you to everyone...I have checked again with my OB and found out we will be in the parks at the same time and that if I need anything or if something happens I can call him. I feel SO much better now! But he still didn't say "no" to Space...but trust me I won't. :D
candles71 03-07-2008, 08:58 AM ..I have checked again with my OB and found out we will be in the parks at the same time
LOL that is too funny and perfect for words!!!
LdyApxr 03-07-2008, 01:34 PM I am just curious about something here. For those that go on rides that are not advisable to pregnant women, if something were to happen, who would you be holding responsible? Yourself? The CM who did not stop you? Disneyland? The Doctor that said it would be fine? I don't think anything is worth risking injury to myself or my child. JMO
