View Full Version : Would love to hear reviews of Old Key West Resort
leonard3 02-23-2008, 02:15 PM We are DVC members and loved the idea of staying in the larger accommodations at Old Key West Resort. So we booked our summer vacation there. Our home resort is Saratoga Springs. Lately I've been hearing rumors that Old Key West is in dire need of renovation and some rooms have actually been dirty when folks checked in. Does anyone have an opinion? It's way early and we still have time to change back without penalty...Thanks!

Ask and you shall receive a link to hotel reviews. (http://www.mouseplanet.com/cgi/reviews/do/display.cgi?product-sku=wdwoldkeywestresort) :)
You may also want to look/search through the trip reports section and see what others have said about their stay at OKW. Personally, it is one that I would like to try some day as well.
steamboatpookster 02-23-2008, 07:24 PM Stayed at OKW last June. So far, it's our favorite place aside from AKL. The rooms are huge and you park right outside your room. If you drive to the parks (as we do) it's quite awesome! I loved the Key West theme and the quiet, relaxing atmosphere.
I would stay there again in a heartbeat. We got a great AP discount last year. Sadly, we are not AP holders anymore, so all I can do is dream. Sigh.
CHEERMOM 02-24-2008, 02:13 PM We stayed at OKW last June, our room was clean, and nothing was in disrepair. I was disappointed with the bus service, and lack of quick service food. The rooms were bigger than other DVC rooms. If we stay there again I would definitely ask for a building closer to the main pool/restaurant area.
Wfoxx 02-25-2008, 06:26 AM we just got back from OKW (Feb.10-15th). Our studio was clean and comfortable. We just love the room size and will be back in Oct staying in a 2 bedroom, with our daughters and oldest daughter's friend for oldest daughter's 16th birthday. I love having a full size washer and dryer instead of the stackables.
apopkamike 03-25-2008, 10:02 AM OKW has the largest DVC rooms and as a Disney cast member (Bus Driver)I can tell you that complaints about bus service is about the same for all resorts. We try to get to all theme parks and all resorts about every 25 to 30 min. Sometimes if we have AWD guests that could add 5 min for each wheel chair or scooter. AS for OKW needing repair, all resorts at Disney are worked on as required. OKW just had exterior work done on several buildings. Each day a large crew of workers will repair minor damage done by guest and the rooms are always in the scheduled loop for major upgrades.
KJSJpipe 03-25-2008, 11:24 AM I stayed in a Studio last August and thought it was very nice. The room size was more then enough for me and my friend, plenty of room to move around not as tight as a 'normal' hotel room. I think if we do studio again as a family of four we will stay there rather then at SSR again. It was pretty tight in the room (@SSR) with the couch open and there was whining from DS & DD about sleeping together by the end of the week, if it had been two beds we would have split them between us and been fine-neither of us wanted to sleep on the pullout with one of them.
dpineda 04-02-2008, 12:23 PM We are vacation club members and we just got back from out first stay at OKW (March 25th - 30th). We had two studios. My daughter stayed in one with a college friend and I stayed in the other with my niece and 12 year old daughter. We had a great location near the Hospitality House in building 25. This is right by the first bus stop. If we missed a bus and saw it pass us on the way back to the front, all we had to do was walk to the Hospitality House and get on at the last stop, so for location, it was GREAT. Our rooms were clean with no visible run down look or anything like that. We liked the feel of the resort, and if you have a car it is great that you are right in front of your unit. I thought the beds were a little hard but I slept okay on them. I had a problem with a peep hole in the door. The light from outside would shine directly on my face. My daughter apparently had the same problem, but they had tape and index cards and they simply covered their hole. The bathroom sink area is in with the toilet and shower. If someone is in the shower you have to wait until they get out to use the sink. There is a small sink where the small kitchen area is, so ended up using that one. I have stayed in a studio at the Boardwalk Villas and the sink area is outside the toilet and shower area. The room was big with plenty of space. I would stay there again but it might not be my first choice. I like the Beach Club and Boardwalk area usually. We usually don't go to Downtown Disney, but we did take the boat over 2 times for dinner. My daughter took the bus back once and she had to wait 45 minutes for one to arrive so she wasn't happy about that. Never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus going to or from any park. So to sum it up, I would stay there again depending on who I am with on the trip and what kind of atmosphere I want. It's good for kids, pool was fun, atmosphere was laid back and very relaxing. I agree with people about their not being many food choices so be prepared to eat elsewhere.
Mark Goldhaber 04-06-2008, 07:55 PM In August, we'll be staying at Old Key West for the 13th time. We've been in studios, 1BRs, 2BRs, and 3BR GVs. It's my favorite resort. It's not in the middle of everything, but that's what makes it so relaxing. Plus, the room size can't be beat, and the tubs in the master suites of the 1BR and up are just fabulous.
There are no elevators except for the three newest buildings, though, so if you've got a problem with stairs you'll need to mention that in your reservation. Either request first floor or a building with an elevator.
Feel free to ask if you've got any more questions about OKW. (Also, you might want to do a search on "Old Key West" or "OKW". There are lots of good threads that predate the current forum configuration, so be sure to include the "News and Current Events" forum, which has all of the earlier threads before the breakout.)
Klutch 04-07-2008, 04:16 PM I think you'd like OKW better than SS. Although SS looks nice, it's just so gargantuan I wouldn't want to stay there. Having driven by it and driven through it, SS looks like an endless condo compound.
