As some of you may remember, I was having some problem posting smilies a while back. I solved my problem by installing Firefox (which I have used on my laptops for some time) on DD's comp. It's worked wonderfully, no problems until a few days ago when it tried to update itself. I keep getting an error message saying that it can't load while other programs are open and/or I don't have permission to change settings.

I have closed all programs and made sure that my status wasn't changed- no dice. I then deleted Firefox and reloaded it. Same problem.

Strangely, IE is now working fine- smilies and all.

Any ideas on what's going on? Can someone suggest a different browser? I'm wondering if perhaps I have a virus that is targeting Firefox but my antivirus software isn't showing anything (I use Avast). I've also run both Spybot and Adaware, didn't solve the problem. I've always been happy with Firefox until now.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

~Whitney

Is it possible that you have it configured for a proxy server when looking for updates?

Hmmm, I didn't even think of that. I will check. Thanks.

Not a proxy server issue.

What's odd is that everything else is working and now IE is working. Oh well...I suppose as long as something works.

Sounds like you might have had 2 firefox processes running at the same time, which tends to cause issues. Had you rebooted before everything resolved itself?

Firefox is definitely a superior browser to IE...not only due to performance, but its more secure in that its less vulnerable (but not totally so!) to Spyware and other malicious code.

Can you paste the text of whatever error message you're receiving, and what site(s) are causing these problems?
