View Full Version : Space Mountain closure
Leslie 02-20-2008, 11:43 AM Heading to WDW June 21-28th. My question is does anyone have anymore current information about Space Mountain being shut down for the above time? My husband said he will no longer go if it is. Guess which ride is his favorite? lol Thanks:)
GusMan 02-21-2008, 05:37 AM Leslie, I have not seen anything mentioning that SM would be closed any time soon. However, things are always subject to change.
Keep an eye out on the WDW Update (http://www.mouseplanet.com/search.php?type=c&cid=wd) page as it does list upcoming refurbs and closures.
With a little humor...I know it would stink going to WDW, let along MK, without the traditional ride or two on SM... but I would never call it a reason not to go. I'd just ride one of the other Mountains a couple of times to make up for it. :)
disnut8 02-21-2008, 06:54 AM I agree with GusMan on the subject of not going to Disney World jsut because one attraction is closed. Everyone has their favorite attraction and each one has to be closed for some period of time. We went one time when It's a Small World was down for a long rehab. That was my stepmother's favorite attraction and she didn't know it was closed. When I told her, she was disappointed but enjoyed her visit.
The only reason not to go if Space Mountain is closed would be if your husband only rides that attraction and nothing else ever.
Finz729 02-21-2008, 11:17 AM I'm sure (at least I hope) your husband was kidding, but I know how he would feel.
The first time my wife and I went, I hadn't been to WDW in over a decade. All I talked about was riding POTC and The Haunted Mansion. Guess what was closed when we got to MK. POTC was only down a day so luckily we got to ride. But THM was apparently getting more extensive work done as was closed the entire week. What a bummer! BUT . . . we still had an amazing time and I converted my wife to almost as big a Disney Nut as I am.
I admit I made sure we passed the Mansion a couple times each day and peered like a sad puppy through those black wrought iron gates, just in case . . . but to no avail.
I can be pretty pathetic when I want to be.
Still, I'll send some good vibes your way that the Mountain is a runnin' when you're there!
Kurtoon 02-21-2008, 04:51 PM OK ...on one trip to WDW we walked through the MK only to be crushed that IASW was closed (for like 9 months).:crying:
an other time it was Splash.:(
an other time my favorite attraction was gone for good (Alien Encounter).
and then the Enchanted Tiki room was closed because it was under new management.
And our last trip to Disneyland they had blue construction walls and scaffolding in front of Princess Aurora/Briar Rose/Sleeping Beauty's Castle.
Now it's one thing to miss a ride....but to cover up the parks weenie really takes the pixie dust out of your magical day.:crying:
The walls did come down on our last day so we finally got a Kodak moment to cherish in the 20 pound, gi-normus vacation photo book vol.7.:D
sorry 'bout the rant:p
I hope Space Mountain is open for your visit.:)
kymom99 02-21-2008, 05:30 PM I too hope SM is open for your trip. It looks like we will be there at the same time and I am hoping to ride it for the first time! I am calling tomorrow to reschedule our trip from June 8 to June 22. Because of having so many snow days, it looks like school is going to go longer than I had hoped.
So, lets all pray for SM to be open and for me to be able to duplicate all my reservations for the later week!
danyoung 02-22-2008, 09:51 AM I love it when these threads come up - we're so lucky to have the internet to communicate on! Back in the good ol' days, you found out which attractions were closed in DL when you ran up to the ticket booth and looked at the little sign in the window that said "Attractions Not Operating Today". It would just CRUSH you to find out that one or more of your favorites wasn't running, but you did the best you could to keep that special Disney mood going!
PrincessTina 02-22-2008, 06:13 PM Yeah I agree with everyone else. Nothing has been said about Space Mountain being refurbished anytime soon but even if it was, that's no reason to not go at all. LoL.
thndrmtn 02-25-2008, 03:04 PM When we went in June 2007 Haunted Mansion was closed. I knew ahead of time and just knew I'd be back again. I was sad to walk past it and not go inside. I'll be sure to ride it plenty of times when I'm there in 3 weeks! Your dh will have plenty more to ride. ;) As for me, I rode SM once and never want to again....unless the lights are on. :p
spacemtngirl 03-09-2008, 09:54 PM I was there in September 07 and in the months before when I was planning the trip there was no sign that the Rockin Rollercoaster would be closed- a few weeks before the trip they officially announced it and it was indeed closed for our entire trip. That ride is one of my favs so just beware- sometimes other closures are listed on the official disney site- then they can add new refurbs with less notice.
ahecht 03-12-2008, 06:44 PM According to Screamscape (http://www.screamscape.com/html/wdw_-_magic_kingdom.htm), the major redo for Space Mountain isn't supposed to start until January 2009. However, like all things with Disney, until the ride actually closes its doors, all dates are subject to change (IIRC, Disneyland's Space Mountain closed 3 months early for its redo due to track damage).
