scoobydooby 02-15-2008, 04:28 PM So, I have been looking at the children's dining options for CS meals which look awful but could do with some clarification as a foreigner. What the 'H' is a sloppy joe? Is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich really a sandwich with peanut butter and jam on the same pieces of bread?? Is that really a popular choice in the US? I have seen a topic here suggesting that at CS places they don't differentiate between the adult and children's choices but I obviously can't rely on that as the small print regarding the DDP says something different. As I'm going to end up eating lots of children's CS meals so my children can choose from the whole menu I'd like to know what I'm letting myself in for. BTW - I hate mac 'n' cheese. Reminds me of sick :(
mzloolue 02-15-2008, 04:39 PM A Sloppy Joe is usually served on a hamburger type bun and is hamburger meat mixed with a tomato based sauce. A bit like a thick spaghetti sauce, but it tastes different.

PB&J is good.
Do you not eat them?
I think that Allears has all the menus for all the WDW eateries.

Andrew 02-15-2008, 04:41 PM Here is a good example of Sloppy Joes (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_23182,00.html). It's a sandwich made with ground meat, usually beef but ground turkey works as well, with tomato sauce and seasonings.
Vegitabeta 02-15-2008, 05:05 PM Yeah, PB&J is peanut butter and jam. It's yummy!
wishiwasthere 02-15-2008, 08:07 PM I love sloppy joes! Hunt's makes a really good sauce and so does Manwich. I love how on the commercials the family eats them without anything falling out yet there is so much meat on them! If you don't have them where you are scoobydoo order a can of the sauce some where and try it!
PB&J is gross to me and I never had it until I was 20. I spit it out I thought it was so nasty.
tdelaney_98 02-15-2008, 10:47 PM Scooby, they're both really popular here and both good (at least to me!!). Peanut butter might be an acquired taste if you are not used to it. Here it is a staple of children's meals. We ate them every morning for breakfast on our last trip to WDW.
We don't see sloppy joes on restaurant menus a lot, but it is typical in American at-home dinners. I've had the sloppy joes at PopC and I loved them. I have a GREAT homemade recipe that only take a few extra minutes more than a hunts or manwich (I like them too, though) if anyone wants the recipe....Just PM me.
As far as Mac & Cheese, I only like very few. If the pasta is too mushy, then it reminds me of sick too. :fez:
Now as long as we're learning about food: What's bangers & mash and bubbles & squeek? :)
petesimac 02-16-2008, 08:00 AM Scoobydooby, do the folks in the UK really not know about peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches? Isn't it funny how something so popular here in the states is an unknown quantity in the UK. I love it. But yes, PB&Js are great! Even though I'm a vegetarian, I used to love sloppy joes; if one of your kids orders it, try it yourself and then take this great american recipe back to the mother country...er, but keep the blood pudding to yourself :).
UsBurchs 02-16-2008, 09:56 AM LOL! I guess we just don't think of PB&J's as something odd! :D I have an Aussi friend who said the first time he tasted peanut butter he had the same reaction to it that we tend to have toward Veggimite or Marmite - although those seem sour to me and peanutbutter is so sweet (in certain cases). I'm not a big fan of the little pre-packaged PB&J's our there on the market. :P I much prefer quality PB with good homemade strawberry jam - YUM-O!
I'm not too fond of Sloppy Joes because of their, well, sloppiness! :) I HATE Kraft Mac and Cheese, but I'll happily eat homemade or Beachers (OMG!) mac and cheese.
Try a PB&J while you are here - it might suprise you! (hey, I tried Marmite - you owe me!) ;) Just kidding!

We have peanut butter here - crunchy and smooth; quite normal but I just don't like it much. Too much bother scraping it from the roof of my mouth...!
Now I've seen Andrew's sloppy joe link I think I'd enjoy that, although I've just got thin again so should probably steer clear... PM me the recipe anyway - the diet always starts tomorrow ;)

No, we really don't know about it! My children only get a jam sandwich as a real treat; sugar on bread as a meal is reserved for very special occasions, with or without peanuts... As for the black pudding thing I'm with you. Nasty.

I would have to say peanut butter is not odd here, I just don't like it. Putting it with seedless jam (jelly) is a strange concept to me though. However, I will try it for sure if you were brave enough to do marmite - (my mum bought me a special edition valentines day marmite with champagne; scrummy)!
wishiwasthere 02-16-2008, 08:15 PM Velveeta mac and cheese! Love it!!
Okay sorry I had to say it.
steamboatpookster 02-17-2008, 07:17 AM If you think pb&J is strange--you better stay clear of pb & bananas and pb & marshmallow fluff! When my friends from England come over for a visit, they wonder why in the world we Americans love Cinnamon so much.
Drince88 02-17-2008, 09:45 AM Are the PB&Js at WDW "Real" PB&Js or they are the Smuckers uncrustables? I've never tried them (and have no intention of doing so), so I don't know how they compare to 'real' ones, but since they are frozen and round - they just LOOK different (so my imagination says they'll taste different).
Anyone know?
kymom99 02-17-2008, 10:38 AM I think some places in Disney have the uncrustables. I'm almost sure they have them in the food courts. If you have ever been in a school cafeteria, as I have since I am a teacher, you would be very familiar with uncrustables and would probably break down and have one out of desperation! They have a TON of PB in them and are loaded with fat. Hard to believe they serve them in schools, when they are supposed to be making school lunches healthier.
DisneyPrincessCat 02-17-2008, 11:05 AM I am pretty sure they use the Uncrustables. Even at DL, the kid's PBJ Monte Cristo is made with Uncrustables!
The Uncrustables taste just like a PBJ on white bread. No real diffrence. We get em as snacks at the Concierge Lounge at the DL Hotel. They have them everyday and they make a good afternoon snack. Peanut Butter is good protein (and yes fat! ) and the jelly makes it sweet for the sweet tooth. Great with a glass of milk. We keep some here at home in the freezer for a quick lunch, if I am tired or out of lunch meat or tires of soup. We have no kids, they are for us! :) They are not terrible.
I love Sloppy Joes. Manwich makes the best mix for it. And Kraft Mac and cheese with lots of pepper, the way I had it as a kid. Yum. I don't eat it often, but once in awhile as a comfort food.
I like that the meals offer carrots instead of fries and you can get healthier choices. That is a move in the right direction.

mckat 02-18-2008, 01:04 PM The only time my kids get uncrustables is at WDW. Think of a PBJ ravioli... I pick up a couple of boxes coming in on the first day and then bring a couple to the parks. That way I can pick up some fruit and milk and give the sandwich to my kids without paying 4$ for it. I know with the meal plans, people don't usually care about the costs of individual meals. But we never use the meal plans for a number of reasons- not the least being that my kids don't like the kid's meals all the time. I find splitting an adult dinner or getting an appetizer for them often works better. I like the flexablity and saving money.
PS At Rose and Crown, kids lunch use to be PB&Jam and crisps...

Frozen butties??? !
jengold29 02-19-2008, 12:57 PM Frozen butties??? !
Sadly yes. Premade (in some smuckers factory who knows when) round PB&J sandwiches with no crusts.
yuck. ;)
YMMV of course.
Drince88 02-19-2008, 01:02 PM And to me, a 'good' pb&j is on squishy white bread (Wonder Bread, Bunny Bread, etc depending on your area of the country) - that's why I can't imagine the uncrustables - though I do think if you're going to deep-fry them (like they do at DL), they're probably a much better starting point.
*Some places in this country they deep-fry everything, at least once, to try it - and some county fairs really go all out in the deep frying things that shouldn't be deep fried. I've heard snickers (chocolate candy bars with nougat, carmel and peanuts in them) and twinkies (sponge cake with cream filling/individual sized) are particularly good, though you won't catch me buying one!
carolinakid 02-19-2008, 01:21 PM Paula Deen made deep fried cheesecake last week on her show. At least she LOOKED like SHE was enjoying it!

Well, that does sound good! (But all things in moderation -and I'd have to be too moderate in EVERYTHING else I ate that week to make it worthwhile for me :D)
mc06367 02-19-2008, 03:13 PM My 7 yr old DS loves PB&J, but will not touch the Uncrustables. I have never tried them but they don't look appetizing.
scoobydooby 02-20-2008, 03:41 PM This whole thread is very confusing for me - uncrustables  deep fried chocolate  Fun to read though!!! Someone above talked about children sharing an adult main course or buying them starters. I think this is a good plan, we did it last year, but have the free DDP this year. I'm guessing we may go home with some unused children's meals having paid out of pocket. I have however made myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (or at least I think I did) to expreriment. Still dwelling on it - surprisingly much better that mac 'n' cheese!

Uncrustables are pre-made peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches without the crust. I think Smuckers makes them? Anyone? Anyone?
anniedg 02-20-2008, 04:17 PM Yep, Smuckers makes 'em. You do keep them in the freezer, but you don't eat them frozen ;) My kids used to love them. We actually first had them at the food court in the Land Pavilion. If you put them in a lunch box in the am, they're just right at lunch time. Believe it or not they also make uncrustable grilled cheese sandwiches, now those I don't get.
A bit of a sidetrack, but Pete if you're not opposed to "fake meat", Morningstar Farms crumblers or Boca's version of "ground beef" can be used to make a great vegetarian sloppy joe!
tdelaney_98 02-20-2008, 06:54 PM Lord have mercy, deep fried PB&J? Never heard of such a thing. Sounds terribly wonderful, I must say! I'm going to DLR!
Now about fried foods: Here in MN, the State Fair is HUGE. EVERYTHING is deep fried and served on a stick. It's an obsession by people here. I'm not originally from here, so I just didn't get it. You leave the fair 100 pounds heavier and at least 100 points higher on the cholesterol scale!!
