View Full Version : Fort Wilderness MRSMOLE 02-08-2008, 04:42 PM Any comments or advice about staying at Fort Wilderness? WDW heart 02-10-2008, 08:51 AM It really is a lovely property. I loved the Hoop Dee Doo Revue!! When we were there they had a nightly bon fire with marshmellows and Chip & Dale. My daughters really loved this! The one thing I did not like was the bus situation. It is a large campground so depending on where your site is, you may have to take a bus to the entrance and then another bus/ferry to wherever you are going. anniedg 02-10-2008, 09:45 AM I'll echo what Anne said. We loved the feel of FW and thought the theming was great. There is a lot to do there. We stayed in one of the cabins and it was great to have the space and a quiet spot that was our own. The only downsides were the transportation and the pools. From many areas in the reosrt you first have to take an internal FW bus and then transfer to another bus or to the boats to MK. As far as the pools go, they were fine, but not themed the way they are at other resorts and it can be a bit of a walk to a pool depending on your site. That was a downside as my boys were big swimmers. I think, however, I read somewhere that they're redoing the main pool??? All in all I would happily stay there again. SJK 02-10-2008, 06:46 PM IF you plan on having your purchases delivered to the campground then keep in mind that you have to go to THE MEADOWS store in order to pick them up. Also, THE MEADOWS is where the pool is. You can rent golf carts to move about the campground but they are somewhat expensive. I personnally like the walk. If your going there in the spring then I hope you enjoy the tangerine trees. The campground was a tangerine grove before Disney took over. Mousellaneous 02-13-2008, 07:42 PM Are you talking about camping or staying in one of the cabins? I can only speak about the campsites and the resort in general - I've never stayed in one of the cabins. I love how large and spread out the resort is; however, that can be a major issue since bussing is not the best (and hasn't been in years). They run 3 different routes through the campground and buses depart from the front (check-in) to Epcot, DAK, DHS, DD, TL, and BB. Boats depart from the OTHER end of the resort to MK, WL, and the Contemporary. Golf carts are approximately $45/day, but I would highly recommend bringing bikes - they are just as convenient to get around. (You can also rent bikes from the bike barn.) The Hoop Dee Doo is a phenomenal dinner show and the Trail's End is the least expensive of any buffet at WDW. And the Campfire show and movie is one of my favorite parts. Each night they have a sing-a-long with Chip and Dale, and you can roast marshmallows over a campfire. I make sure to go to this several times during each stay - Sundee (the lady who often does the show makes it a lot of fun). Then they show a movie (one on weekdays, 2 on weekends). It's a lot of fun. There's also hay wagon rides and carriage rides that depart from the Settlement, and you can go down to the beach to watch the fireworks from the MK. There's also the Electric Water Pageant. There are two trading posts - the main one in the center of the campground, and a slightly smaller one down by the lake. There are also two swimming pools - the main one at the Meadows which is supposed to be redone by next year, and a smaller one up by the cabins. The cabins are mostly located toward the front of the campground (although there are a couple that are just a stone's throw from the Settlement). I could keep talking about it, but I think you get the point. One other big note - you cannot drive inside the campground - you can only go out. The only place you can park, other than at your site is at the Meadows, and that's limited to fifteen minutes. Hope this helps - if you have any other questions, just ask! I love FW . . . i've always stayed there, we've been like 10 times and have always stayed in the cabins (and before then were trailers). . . What do you want to know? :) MomOfDisneyBoys 02-14-2008, 09:47 PM We loved staying in the cabins. Having the space was great, and the resort was very peaceful. That being said, we chose to stay elsewhere this year because: -we missed the convenience of having a food court -it took FOREVER to get anywhere. We rented a golf cart, which was expensive, but I would not have stayed without one. Even with the cart, I felt like we spent way too much time GETTING places. FMTX 02-18-2008, 08:29 AM Can anyone tell me about the fishing at FW? We typically stay at POR where there is a place on Ol'man island to cane poll fish. My sons love doing this and think of it as one of the things they do when at WDW, but we are staying at WL this next trip. I was thinking about going over to FW and doing the fishing there rather than driving to POR but it is hard to get any specfics on FW fishing other than they do it and the rental prices. Can anyone tell me: Where can you fish? Everywhere says canal fishing. Is it all canals or just certain one(s). I have not seen anything about fishing on the lake from shore but have seen pictures of folks doing this. Is this still something you can do? Do they only rent stuff at the Bike Barn or do they rent by the lake? Any information would be greatly appreciated. It has been hard tracking down specifics on this. MRSMOLE 03-12-2008, 07:45 PM Thanks to everyone for the great advice. I am planning on staying in one of the cabins with my 4 children. My trip is not for a little under a year, but I am absorbing every bit of information I can. Thanks to all mzloolue 03-16-2008, 04:24 PM Thanks to everyone for the great advice. I am planning on staying in one of the cabins with my 4 children. My trip is not for a little under a year, but I am absorbing every bit of information I can. Thanks to all We got a good deal on two cabins last year for our crew. I loved it. The only draw back to me was the transportation as we had to ride the Fort Wilderness bus to the bus stop to catch a bus to the parks, but I did love it. It felt very relaxed. And if you are from an urban environment, then it would be awesome. I saw falcons I guess, like small pale colored hawks, armadillo, squirrels, many birds. DH and I got up early in the morning and went to the pool and there was usually no one, or very few, there at that time of day. My family has always stayed there (my father will ONLY stay there). .. and now that i'm older with a family of my own i'm thinking of branching out but Fort Wilderness is so wonderful that there are so many reasons to stay there. Did you have any questions? tchatters 03-29-2008, 09:41 AM We stayed in two cabins last March- two families with a 5, 4 and 3 year old between us. We loved the cabins, the open space, the room to just let the kids RUN. My best advice though is to make sure you get a cart. With little kids the walk is too long and too far and they're tired before you even get on the boat or the bus. You can wait for the bus internally to go to the boat docks but depending on timing, you can wait 1 min or 20. We were there 7 days and got a cart the middle 3- when we had late ADRs one night and an early character breakfast the next morning. I'd stay at the cabins again in a second but I'd make sure we saved enough for the cart. tappenfeat 04-20-2008, 07:28 PM Hey ya'll! Has anyone here stayed in the cabins at Fort Wilderness and how did you like/dislike staying there? Any opinions would be great! stan4d_steph 04-21-2008, 07:55 AM Hey ya'll! Has anyone here stayed in the cabins at Fort Wilderness and how did you like/dislike staying there? Any opinions would be great!I merged your thread with another recent thread on the same subject. See above for some opinions on the cabins. tappenfeat 04-21-2008, 08:03 AM Thanks again! You are such a big help! The comments are wonderful. The only question I have is: We are renting a car for the week, can we park our car at the cabin? nicthenurse 04-21-2008, 03:57 PM Hi...Just saw your post on the Wilderness Cabins. Did you know that when Mom & Glenn took us we stayed in the cabins? They were so much fun and being "campers" you will absolutely LOVE it there. We stayed in the cabins very comfortably and we did park the huge station wagon there with no problem what-so-ever. We are headed down to the Dolphin in December. Actually I think it's a week before you're going. There are 13 of us going and guess who's "bunkin'" with Mom? Aunt Punky!!! Anyway..you will love the cabins and have a blast at Fort Wilderness. Go to Hoop-Dee-Doo...if you haven't been there yet. Well worth the $$$. tappenfeat 04-21-2008, 05:48 PM Hi Nic! 2 cousins!!! Yeah! Thanks for the input...that does help us a lot. Aunt Punky with your Mom! LOL!!! Bring earplugs! hee hee!!! She's a pip to be with...;) Great to hear from you and tell everyone we said HI! anniedg 04-22-2008, 08:34 AM We also parked our rental car right at the cabin. We generally used the car unless we were going to MK, then we took the internal FW bus to the dock and rode the boat over to MK, love that boat ride! tappenfeat 04-23-2008, 07:20 PM Thank you everyone! This is the place to find the right answers!!! :fez: |
