We are traving to Disneyland this March with my parents (in their 60's), my husband and I (in our 30's) and our sons 8, 6, and 3. My dad's health has dramatically decreased this year and we are going to rent a ECV (Scooter) for him to get around. He was concerned about walking from the hotel shuttle drop off area to the entrance of DL. So, after checking we are going to rent from a company in Anaheim. They will deliver the scooter to the hotel the day before we arrive, then pick it up the day after we leave. I am very please about that. I really would love to hear any advice about getting around DL with a scooter (and kids). Anything we should be aware of? Thank you so much for your help!

First of all, have him practice with the scooter in the hotel parking lot if at all possible, he needs to know how "fast' the scooter is going to go depending on the speed knob setting....they are basic knobs as a general rule with a turtle at the bottom and a rabbit at the high end...my scooter can go as fast as 5 mph full speed which is much to fast for the family to keep up with and not safe inside the parks. I keep mine turned fairly 'slow' most of the time.

As for in the parks, be prepared to be invisible, people are busy looking at the park, their map, their group/kids whoever and will just step out in front of you without realizing that you can't slam on a brake.

As for inside the park, I recommend reading the guide for guests with disablitlies and getting a feel for the attractions he can take the scooter ON, (the Mark twain or the carousel) the ones he will need to transfer from the scooter to a ride vehicle and to learn to not let embarassment get in the way. If it's hard/difficult for him to stand for 'several minutes' or to manuver on a moviing walkway then he needs to tell the CM's at HM that he needs to take the scooter to the loading area.

The best advice, go slow, have fun and be prepared for the other guests that are so busy having their trip of a lifetime that they just don't realize they are putting themselves at risk by stepping in front of your dad.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone else have any good ideas to share? We are very new to this.

I think Mamma covered it pretty well. If he knows the park, make sure everyone knows where the next stop is. Then agree to meet there should you get separated. This happens a lot to us. It gets crowded, and people step between you and the ECV, effectively cutting the ECV off. Some reason, if I am not running my kids over with the ECV, people tend to think the 3 inches between me and my kids is enough for their group to cut in. It is a whole new perspective from the ECV.
