More signs of Eisner's desperation: Disney's ABC is actively soliciting more sex and violence from its producers to increase ratings:

(quick quote:)

>>NEW YORK (The Hollywood Reporter) --- When Steven Bochco first pitched the concept for "NYPD Blue ( news - Y! TV)," ABC nearly passed on the
controversial cop show. Its liberal use of profanity and partial nudity was so problematic it required an extra year of development before the network unveiled the series in 1993.

What a difference a decade makes. While Bochco was busy preparing the series' 10th season, network brass approached him about giving him even more
latitude regarding sex and language. "I've actually had conversations with ABC about going a little further than we've been going; I guess that's a bit of response to shows like 'The Shield,' " Bochco said, referring to the envelope-pushing police drama that has made such a splash on FX. <<

Reminds me of a story I once read or heard about Walt being hassled by some of the other moguls (Jack Warner possibly) about his films lacking relevant content, to which Walt responded "I'll put my Mary Poppins up against your pornography any day."

To me, NYPD Blue is one of the great shows on TV. Its realism contributes to that. But I don't think adding more sex and violence is really gonna do much to improve the show. It's always been good storylines and great acting that make that show what it is, not that you hear the "S" word every once in awhile.

I don't think the motive of ABC's inquiry was meant to increase "NYPD Blue"'s artistic content, but simply to pander in desperation for promotable controversy. After all, the producer didn't go to THEM asking for more leeway. I doubt that's the only show to receive such a request...

Sorry for the confusion. I agree with you. That was my point. It's a good show and doesn't need to add more of anything (except good writing, it has slacked a bit in this area).

ABC does have some good shows (although not many) and screwing around with the good ones seems kinda stupid, to me.

The problem with "cutting edge" entertainment is that the only way it stays that way is to continue to push the envelope - if an NYPD Blue is considered cutting edge in 2000 with partial nudity and colorful language, what does it do next? In 2003, does it have to go to "cable versions" or does it simply die off?

If you are looking for a particular audience of 15-25 year old males, how long before we get "Dude - Where's My Car? - The Series" or "The Dr. Evil Adventure Hour" featuring Mini Me ......

Trying to resurrect ABC seems like a doomed cause ........

Oddly enough, I'd be far more inclined to watch these two shows than any of the formula drivel on ABC's fall schedule.

You sound like a programmer for FOX!;)

Hmmmm... I wonder if the aquisition of "Monk" had anything to do with this? Even though it's not terribly violent it may be part of their plan.
