View Full Version : Stroller vs Wheelchair
fronkfam 02-04-2008, 06:57 PM Our son has seizure disorder and other disabilities. Last time we were at DLR, he was small enough to ride in a stroller. He doesn't need a wheelchair, but we know he won't be able to walk the entire day and if he has a seizure, he will definitely not be walking. Since he is now too large for a stroller, is there anywhere we can rent a pediatric size wheelchair?
Thanks for the help!

Gilesmt 02-05-2008, 09:18 AM Here is a thought that might work depending on where you live. When my daughter was that age, I was quite envolved with other parents who have children with disabilities and many of them would loan things to each other, I would loan my daughters w/c or borrow a walker from another parent, because most children do not need these items all the time. My daughters w/c made more trips to DL than anyone I know. So see it another parent from the school or church or support group has one, and will let you borrow it, because then you will be able to adjust it to your childs needs easily before you leave home and you can gate check it at the airport for nothing and then you say on rental.
If you do not know anyone you could call a developmental disabilities agency, a family support agency, the ARC or early intervention center near you, they may have a lending libriary near you, when I lived in a medium size city and was a case manager we knew of three agencies in the area that lent equipment out this way for free, you may just need a note from a teacher or doctor which should be easy to get. Us parents who have children who out grow a w/c every two to three years are happy to send them to these lending places for the children who may only need them for a week or two, they will not give them just for a broken leg usually but a seizure disorder in DL is a good reason to have a w/c. I know one of the storage bins a few years ago wear so loaded with w/c' that they had to stop excepting them for a while. I have used these for my daughter once they stopped giving her w/c's. They are a great resource. I hope that helps, and some people think a w/c in a airport, but you can load all the bags on it, or place him and your younger child in the w/c and have more time without chasing them, it is not hard at all and we found it made up for my daughter's comfort.
Cheshire Figment 02-05-2008, 02:21 PM At WDW some ppeople will rent a double stroller and use it for larger children.
Also, it is possible (again, at WDW, I don't know if they do it at DLR) to get a GAC and tag that allows use of a stroller as if it were a wheelchair.

fronkfam 02-05-2008, 05:23 PM We have used a stroller with the GAC for him before, but he is much too big this time. Not by weight, but he is too tall.
It would be great to borrow a wheelchair, but we aren't flying this time and won't have room in our van to bring a wheelchair with us.
Thanks for all of the ideas.

DL doesn't rent double strollers, so this wouldn't work there. (Much to the surprise of a coworker who went with his pre-school age triplets and with 2 parents, one kid had to switch off!)
fronkfam 03-03-2008, 06:53 AM I just had another thought about a wheelchair vs. stroller for our son who has seizures. We have never used a wheelchair with him before, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but if he has a seizure I know I can recline our stroller for him to take a nap. I assume a wheelchair wouldn't be able to recline. An I wrong?
Thanks!
No, you are correct - unless you get a highly specialized wheelchair, it won't recline.

There's a thread in the Parenting forum that might be a big help to you, too.

dws_60 03-13-2008, 03:04 PM One of my grandkid who is 4yo , has a Muscular Distrophy and we use a stroller for him and have a GAC (SAP here in DLP) for him. He hates it because he thinks everyone look at him because of the SAP even if he looks like a kid in a stroller. But he is a small kid so we will use the stroller as long as we can. The stroller is much comfier than a kid wheelchair and he would hate it anyway...
Hope it helps
Take care
