In Al's latest DIG, other than the retarded-looking grip tape on the drinking fountain, he really didn't say anything negative about Disneyland? True, he's still got the same old rants about DCA, but let's face it, only lots of time and money will fix that problem. Could the suits finally be starting to do things right?

I don't recall Al referring to the safety tape as
retarded-looking and as one of several parents of special needs children that are regulars here on MP I have to speak up and say that the use of the word "retard" in the manner you have in your post is very offensive to me and others I'm sure. I don't mean this to be a flame, most people do not use the word in the proper context, in fact I'd venture to guess most don't even know the correct definition to use the word appropriately. But for many of us the manner in which you used the word turns it into a 'slur' against our special needs family members and friends ....I'm sure that was never your intent, and I want to say again I don't intend this as a personal attack, more of an informational response.

Ok... all that aside

That somewhat baffles me since in many cases steps, curbs and so forth always have some difference in color between them for people with depth perception, but (I may have missed it) they didn't do that for the fountain. You would have thought that legal would have noted this before it was even installed since those kind of things have always used colored surfaces. But what are you going to do? (outside of peeling the tape off).:D

I would say legal needs to get a grip, but that is their job to keep possible lawsuits against the park to a minimum.

Mammasilva--You're right, of course, and I apologize to you and anyone else I offended. Please replace that two-word phrase with "extremely unattractive."

Why now, after all of these years? And yes, Nigel2 is right. It should have been done at the time of building it.

But, the word I choose for the tape is purely and simply TACKY.

I mean, come freakin' on.

All of the materials at their disposal and they use white {and was there also yellow? Don't have the picture in front of me} tape?

Even that black gritty safety tape would look better. And a little thinner and some one take a little more time adhering it?

I wonder if this is from one person making a big gripe because their kid fell?

I say, take better care of your kids. Don't let them climb on everything just because they want to. Duh.

The tape isn't to increase traction and prevent slipping. It's suppose to grab your attention and prevent you from tripping. (Of course they'd use grip tape though so that the tape itself doesn't become a hazard.) It's screaming out "HEY! HERE'S A STEP!" There are better, less tacky ways of doing this however...like contrasting colors...NATURAL colors. Maybe even paint the rising part of the step a different color like a black or darker gray and leave the tread part of the step natural.

I get the feeling this was a case of Disneyland not consulting with WDI on how best to fix the "problem." Bad show indeed! :( I trust that an imagineer would never come up with that kind of solution.

Um...yeah. The point of this thread wasn't the tape on the drinking fountain, it was the noticeable lack of negativity in Al's column.

Yeah, but I just think it looks nasty. :D

But, your point is right.

I actually don't think his views are very negative.
I mean, they can be critical, but, I think that is good
sometimes. Get those powers that be moving.

Fix what needs fixing!!! {and without such bright tape! :mad: }

"Are there rocks in the road ahead?"

I especially agreed with Al's comments that anything done for September 11 should be on a low-key scale. I don't think there should be anything spectacular done.

I have to admit that I noticed Al seemed a bit more upbeat this time.

I also have to admit tripping on those steps (and seeing others doing it). And I think the fact that they are the same color as the rest of the surrounding area doesn't help. I'm willing to bet that the tape is mearly a stop-gap measure untill they can decide the proper way to fix the problem. Paint would fix it, but would wear poorly and need constant upkeep. I think they could resurface it and do better.

It's easy in a crowded situation to not notice the steps there.

Yeah, as he cackles with glee whenever he reports bad news about DCA.

JUST to be precise, the quote is "I do not think it means what you think it means."
