Anne Howard – January 2008 - Walt Disney World

Cast of Characters:

Anne Howard - age 39, Disney fanatic! Previous trips in Oct-’05, June-‘05, ‘02, '99, '95, '91, '89, '88, '81, '79, '77, '76, '74
Quinn Howard – age 11. Previous trips in ’05, '02, '99.

As some of you may know, I am in nursing school. I had a 6-week break this winter. I came up with the idea of Quinn and I going to WDW back in November when I was trudging through Fundamentals. The two of us are really the Disney fanatics in the family and I thought it would be great for us to have some time together before the craziness began again. I booked the airfare in November through Southwest. Then, I decided against the trip and figured I would cancel the flight at the last minute and get vouchers. I had never mentioned the trip to Quinn because I wasn’t certain and didn’t want to get her hopes up.

So the four of us were going to go to the Pennsylvania Pocono’s instead. The week before David found that he had work plans he couldn’t get out of and Beth had social plans she didn’t want to miss. By Monday the 21st, I did a 360 and decided to go through with my Disney plans since I already had the airfare.

Monday, I called Disney to book a room. The only rooms they had available were Saratoga Springs and Fort Wilderness cabins. I had stayed at the cabins before. I liked the campground and the cabins but the busses were very inconvenient. I booked Saratoga Springs not knowing anything about the resort.

I called back each day to see if they had anything else. I really wanted a moderate or The Contemporary for convenience to the Magic Kingdom. On Wednesday they had the Beach Club available for only $75 extra for the whole stay. I love the Beach Club and really liked being able to walk to Epcot so I booked that. They never had any other resorts available.

I booked the Pirate & Princess Party at the last minute for the 26th. I made some ADR’s but we ended up cancelling all of them.

Thursday January 24, 2008

I did not tell Quinn of our plans. She knew we were going away on Friday and that she would be missing school. I told her that she had an orthodontist appointment on Thursday and I would be taking her out of school early.

I assembled a packet of information with park maps, schedules, special events and information on the Pirate & Princess party. On the top I wrote Quinn’s Surprise trip to Walt Disney World.

David drove me to Quinn’s school. I signed her out of school. While walking to the car, she said, “Why is Dad here?” I told her that he was off today, which he was. So we drove to the airport. The dentist is about 2 minutes from school. David told her he had to run some errands. She accepted this and just read a book. When we started approaching the airport, she asked, “Is this the airport?” David said he had to drop something off. She seemed to accept this. So we finally pulled up in front of Southwest and stopped. She still didn’t seem to think anything was amiss. I handed her the packet of information. She read the first page and just looked confused. I said, “We are going to Disney World!” She smiled and was shocked. It was finally sinking in for her. She couldn't stop smiling. I got out and gathered my bags together. Quinn still thought we may be kidding and was catching up. She was very excited.

We checked our one bag at Southwest. Our flight was scheduled at 12:45pm. While waiting, she looked at all the information I had prepared for her. She was very surprised, excited, and couldn’t stop beaming. We ate muffins and tea at the airport. Our flight was uneventful. When we left Baltimore, it was 25 degrees outside.

Our flight was uneventful. We landed at 3pm. We prearranged a Towncar with Tiffany's. Instead of a grocery stop, we had them stop at Downtown Disney. I got a Disney rewards card with my Disney Rewards from my Disney Visa. This was one of the few placed that would do this without any prior notice. This gave me about $250 Disney 'Dollars' that I could spend towards tickets and hotels. Downtown Disney was crowded. We made our way over to guest relations and completed the transaction with no problems. I also had about 12 park hoppers that I wanted them to check. I knew I had at least a couple park hopper days left from previous trips. But I had no idea which park hoppers had them. The CM checked all my park hoppers. I was pleased to find out that I had 4 cards that had 1 park hopper day each on them. I threw away all the other cards.

We arrived at the Beach Club. The Beach Club really is beautiful. It is a casual, classy, New England Clam Bake feeling. The lobby is full of upscale wicker and muted sunshine and sea colors with sunshine streaming in through the windows. There was no wait to check in. I asked for a room relatively close to the elevator. They gave me a couple of options. We got a second floor room with a side view of the lagoon and pool. It was a very nice view. It was only a short walk from the elevator. The room was just fine. Exactly like I remembered from before. We didn't unpack. We rested maybe five minutes before getting our things together and deciding to go to Epcot.

We took the back entrance into Epcot. I paid for a one day one park admission ticket for the two of us to get in. There was no line or wait to get in or go through admissions. We headed to Soarin'. The line should not have taken a long time but the CM did not seem to know what she was doing. She kept getting phone calls from the attraction complaining that she was not getting people through the line quickly enough. She would sit and wait for people to come in the FP line while holding the regular line off. We finally made it on the ride and loved it again. We immediately got in line again. This time we shot through the line. They had replaced the CM. Then we rode, Journey into Imagination. Next, we headed over to Test Track and rode Test Track three times in a row. Quinn had never rode this and she loved it.

Woo-hoo! Epcot is my favorite park! I love the International Gateway.

Great call on switching to the Beach Club. The SSR has got to be the dullest resort in all of WDW!

Looking forward to reading more. :)

I honestly didn't decide until Monday. I knew I wanted to go away before I returned to school. Since things fizzled on my oldest and husband going a light bulb just went off in my head. :)

Still at Epcot..........

We walked to Honey I Shrunk the kids but when we got there it was closed. I have no idea why since it was open the next day. We went back to The Land and rode Livin with the Land and the Circle of Life. We made our way over to Mexico. At this point we were both starving. We shared an order of nachos and diet coke and got a great seat for watching Illuminations. We had some trees blocking partially but were very happy to have a seat while waiting. We waited about 20 minutes and Illuminations started.

Illuminations did not dissapoint. It was beautiful. Afterwards, we made our way around World Showcase and went out the back entrance of Epcot to the Beach Club. We amazingly found our way back to our room using the quiet pool card entrance and up an elevator. Much quicker than going back to the main entrance. We called and made ADR's for Mexico tomorrow night since we had decided to go back to Epcot tomorrow night to take advantage of Extra Magic Hours. We called David and my parents to give them updates, watched a little TV then fell asleep.

I had made a few ADR's and plans prior to the trip but I really let Quinn decide what we would do so we ended up changing a lot of things. Today, we were going to the Magic Kingdom and also meeting up with a dear friend. When I woke up, I stepped out onto the balcony to get an idea of the temperature. It was cold! Quinn and I showered and then had breakfast at the Beach Club. The Beach Club's store has a whole section where you can buy groceries and food. They also have a fresh hot food section where you can get scrambled eggs, bacon, etc. And a cold food section with different selections. Today they had a big yogart and toppings buffet. This was an addition since the last time I had been and was a great option for families not wanting to spend the money or time on a sit down breakfast. They had lots of fruit too. We simply bought cereal and milk. We also bought bottled water for the park. We ate in the Solarium which is down a hallway just opposite the store. The Solarium is the entrance into the Beach Club Villas. It is beautiful and has lots of plush chairs and tables. Lots of sunshine streaming through the windows. It was always empty so we ate our breakfast here every morning.

We went out to the bus stop and a Magic Kingdom bus was pulling up. We hopped on the bus, got a seat and off we went to the magic kingdom. We went through bag search and used our park hoppers.

There is just nothing like that first stroll down Main Street. Needless to say, we were happy and excited. We cut through the Noodle Station and headed to Tomorrowland. We obtained FP for Space Mountain. Stitch's Great Esape was showing a standing line of 10 minutes so we jumped onto that. We only waited a few minutes and then were let into the holding room. We loved this. It had been one of Quinn's favorites. She has always loved Stitch. We hopped on Buzz Lightyear with little wait. We obtained second FP's for Space Mountain before using our first ones. Quinn had never been on before. She loved it. Nothing like Space Mountain to bring back memories for me. I have been riding and loving this ride since my father dragged me on the ride when I was 6 years old. When we finished we rode the TTA, Carousel of Progress and then back on Space Mountain.

We made our way to Peter Pan and got FP's for later. We stopped for a bight to eat. I had a turkey leg and Quinn had a burger at Cosmic Ray's. It was a little crowded but I have seen it a lot worse. We were able to get a table. The food was good and hot. Then, we headed to It's A Small World to meet up with some good Canadian friends! Eh! :p Meeting them was wonderful! We all rode IASW. While on the ride, we called some friends that really appreciate the tune. Ya know, you just can't get enough of it! :D

It's a Small World (http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h72/weneppott/WDW%20January%202008/WDW%20Jan%202008/brian039.jpg)

Our meet was wonderful! Our friends wanted to watch the parade and we could not leave the MK without visiting our friends the Pirates of the Carribean so we said goodbye. We quickly used our FP for Peter Pan then headed over to the Pirates. We stopped for some Dole Whip! We had not seen this since the new version. I had been afraid that it would be changed too much but I liked the changes and it was not that altered. We love the Pirates. We had not bought one souvenir yet but here we brought out the Disney Visa. We bought shirts for David & Beth. We bought pirate ears for a friend of Quinn's. Quinn bought a pieces of eight necklace and earrings for tomorrow night.

We headed out of the Magic Kingdom, caught a bus right away back to the Beach Club for a break and a swim............

Wow, that is exactly what Whitney said. :~D

Your trip sounds so perfect, Anne. I love it when it isn't even a planned trip and everything just falls into line. Quinn is going to remember that trip her entire life.

LOL. . . never thought of that!

We surprised Jarod and Lance (their sister was just a baby then) with a trip once - we actually got all the way to the Seattle airport (4 hr drive) before we told them where we were really going. Jarod was about 6 at the time - he was sooo excited. It really is fun to be able to totally surprise them on some of the trips.
