Hi -
I'm a single mom who will be flying with a four year old. Does anyone know if I will need any type of ID for him or a letter from my ex, saying I can take him out of the state?
Thanks!

The airline isn't going to ask for ID or the letter but if it's in the custody agreement that you need the other parents permission I highly recommend covering your position by asking him to put it in writting that you have their permission to take your child on vacation.

I am married, but I have flown, domestically, without my husband but with my two kids, and the airlines have never questioned me, or asked for ID for the kids. It is really more of an issue for international travel; both parents need to be present to apply for a passport for a child under 14, or the absent parent must provide a notarized statement giving the OK for the passport. I know of many single parents who have flown by themselves, with their kids, without a problem. If there are any custody issues, you may want to bring documentation. There is no specific requirement that a single parent, or a parent traveling alone, provide any documentation, for travel within the states.
