View Full Version : Upgrading AP Deluxe to Premium
lordog 01-27-2008, 12:40 AM I have a Deluxe AP and will use it for five days in June. One of the Saturdays is a blackout day so I was wondering: the pass expires two days after my last day of the trip. Can I upgrade for less than the $40 blockout day charge by upgrading from Deluxe to Premium and paying a prorated amount of having only two days left on the pass?
Hopefully I wasn't too confusing....

If you upgrade, you have to pay the full cost of the difference between the two passes, no matter how much time is left, so it wouldn't seem to make sense to do that in your case.
Leap for Joy 01-27-2008, 06:38 AM Upgrading doesn't extend the life of your pass. You'd pay the full price difference and it would still expire on the original date. You may be better off using a parkhopper and upgrading it to a new DAP on that blockout day -- that way you could use early entry during some of the days of your trip.

MammaSilva 01-27-2008, 09:42 AM I think Leap for Joy had a better 'plan' if you plan to renew your pass. Buy a park hopper for Saturday then upgrade that to your 2008/2009 pass, if you just buy a $40 black out pass it's just gone, but if you buy a 2 day hopper you can use that against the price of the new annual pass. If you don't plan to purchase a pass then just buying the $40 blackout pass is the most economical.
lordog 01-27-2008, 10:30 AM Thanks for the replies everyone. I could swear that I remember reading years ago that you could do this and you would only pay for the remaining days. I guess to me, it doesn't make sense to use the renew option because the next time that I would go to DL would be six to seven months later. That is too much of a gap and half of the pass would be wasted. I usually just renew when I am actually going to use the pass immediately.
Mermaid 01-27-2008, 10:33 AM Are you going to renew for next year? You could do what Leap for Joy said. Or, if you want a Premium for next year, I think you can renew early and upgrade at the same time. For example, 30 days before it expires, send in the renewal but upgrade to to a Premium. Then you in effect get 13 months of a PAP once they process the paperwork. I am 90% sure you can do that. I was thinking about doing that MA weekend. But, maybe someone else will help out!
lordog 01-27-2008, 10:39 AM Mermaid,
That is a great plan for someone who has the luxury of going frequently. Then, no time is wasted. Like I mentioned to upgrade then would cause me to lose about 6 to 7 months on my pass just to get in on that one mentioned Saturday. I just remember a cast member on the boards saying this about the pro rated amount, but maybe I imagined that or the policy has changed. Oh well, it would have been a good and creative plan.

We arrived Dec 22, and the 22-25 were blacked out for her DAP. So, I renewed her pass as a PAP on the 22nd and we got those days "for free". But as you don't plan on going again for 7 months, your best route would be to just do the block out.
And going back to the proration, I bought my DAP last July as that was all I needed during that trip. When I went in Dec, I upgraded to a PAP. There was no proration or extension of the pass. I do it this way as more of a layaway plan. I pay for the pass I need at the time. I upgrade when I need the extra days. We always have one PAP in the family for discounts though.
Darkbeer 01-27-2008, 10:08 PM Disney did Prorate in 2000 until late 2001 as part of the upgrading to a "2-park" AP from a Disneyland Only AP when DCA opened. When Disney decided to drop the prices of 2-park AP's to basically the Disneyland only AP prices in the fall of 2001, they stopped the pro-ration option. So it has been over 6 years that the rule is, you must pay the full price between the prior AP purchased to the higher level AP, and that your expiration date will remain the same as the prior AP.
