We did the basic dining plan (1 table service, 1 counter service, 1 snack) and we knew going in that appetizer and gratuity (tip) was not included. I will as briefly as possible just note our observations:

--we did not have a bad experience at any meal we had with any server, and, even though it has been a few years, overall I thought that every restaurant the food was better.

--the servers were all very clear with us what was included and not included in the dining plan. It was obvious that some of the servers did not like the new dining plan and that some did not like explaining the new dining plan (how do you explain it without it sounding like you are begging for a tip?), but we were always treated very well. But, we also knew the changes and were expecting them which may have been a relief to the servers (just speculation).

--the receipts at the end of the meal can be confusing. There was always three of four receipts tucked into the folder. One was the zeroed amount that was covered by the dining plan, one was the total with suggested tip of 18% and 20% figured on them at the bottom (not included just conveniently figured for you), and a receipt or two to charge alcohol, appetizers, etc. to the room or credit card. It can be confusing which receipt is which sober let alone after a pint of beer and 12 oz of sake.

--even without the appetizer, you still get a ton of food. I can't imagine trying to do the deluxe plan (or what I heard another couple call the Jabba the Hut plan).

--we never saw any irate customers complaining about the 2008 plan. I've read on blogs that there has been cussing matches and security having to be called, but we did not see any of that (and we were looking for it knowing the changes and some of the comments left on some forums).

--we left at least 18% at every meal. The servers would be appreciative, I think, that if you leave cash make sure you have it on the table for them to see when you give them your key to the world card so they know they aren't getting stiffed by a big zero on the tip line on the bill. Maybe not necessary, but I think it would be a nice courtesy.

I know this may be more of a trip report, but it may also answer some question y'all might have about the new DDP.

This is useful detail thanks. I'm quite glad to know I'll get a receipt for the extras we pay for separately (I can work out holiday totals easily then) and one that works the tip out for me too, which I personally would always pay in cash, even if charging everything else to my room card. Probably would have confused the hell out of me though if I hadn't known in advance what it was all about - I am now prepared!

Terrific of you to synopsize the new plan! I'm ok with them getting rid of the tip (although I wish there were a better bang for the buck). However, I'm NOT a dessert person and I wish they would allow either an appetizer OR a dessert....Still ticked off about it----

Thanks again for detailing your experience!

That is a great point. We loved all of our deserts, but at many meals we most likely would have opted for the appetizer instead of the desert.

Aren't many of the appetizers more expensive than the deserts?
