View Full Version : Rain expected this weekend. - What to do?
dpella 01-21-2008, 09:18 PM I have a trip scheduled to the DR this weekend and see that rain is in the forecast for the entire time. If possible, should I reschedule my trip? I would have to reschedule to some time in Feb. (I am trying to fit in one last trip before our annual passes expire.) Do the parks become much less crowded when it rains? Any guidance would be appreciated.
TTFN92 01-21-2008, 09:24 PM Less crowded? Depends. The one time we went when it rained it was horribly crowded the entire day. Other people say it is better and like it when it rains. When we went to WDW it said it was supposed to rain quite a bit and it barely spit on us. We prepared for the worst and were pleasently surprised. If you do decide to go, go prepared and you should be fine. :)
Darkbeer 01-21-2008, 09:32 PM I live in Orange County (Tustin) , and the expected weather this weekend does state rain, but not heavy rain for long periods.
What I would do, either wear a windbreaker that has a hood (something I usually bring during the rainy season), or buy a cheap poncho from a dollar store or a place like Wal-Mart or Target prior to going to the park.
If it is raining off and on, just go with the flow, if it starts to rain hard, go see a show or long lasting attraction (such as Pirates) and hope for the clouds to past over the area before you are done.
The rain does help keep away some locals and AP holders, which can show up on another day, and helps to keep the queue length short.
Lisa and I will be there both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, stop by and say Hi if you see us....
Shinku 01-21-2008, 09:45 PM Rain is great because people give up early and go home. Well, they complain at city hall first and then go home lol ;)
Aside from outside attractions like the teacups, everything else remains open and the lines get shorter from everyone going home. California rain isn't bad, at least not at this time of the year. Take Darkbeer's advice and go with the flow, you might be suprised!
Darkbeer 01-21-2008, 09:52 PM One more comment, I don't recommend Umbrellas, unless it is one that compacts, as they are a pain to deal with while riding many rides.
HobbitFeet 01-22-2008, 12:31 AM I am not happy to hear that rain is forecast for my quick solo trip, BUT I will say that riding Grizzly while it drizzles is very fun. Even if it's cold (I rode it twice in a row in December). :) As long as you have a poncho to keep you somewhat dry!
And a good place to warm up is the ToT inside queue.
When it rained in the morning during my one-day visit in '05, DL emptied. We had NO lines until well after noon. It was very cool. :)
mommy-san 01-22-2008, 07:17 AM The forecast has changed so many times I'll only believe the rain when I am actually standing in it!!!

I like your attitude!
We'll be there Thurs and Friday, since the forecast has been available the days of rain have changed daily.
Personally I'm not caring much if there's a bit of rain...as long as it doesn't pour on our driving days! LOL.
Walt'sbirthdaygirl 01-22-2008, 11:45 AM Pull out your ponchos and have a great time!!! Disneyland is fun in the rain, just try to work Alice and the Teacups and TSI in first thing if the rain hasnt started. Its also a good chance to check out Jedi Training academy if you have little ones that are so inclined, with the crowds down they seem to pick almost every interested child in the audience.
We'll be there this weekend, its been my karma over the last six months or so every extended DL trip we have taken there has been rain. For the most part it keeps the crowds down, September we had the park nearly to ourselves friday and saturday. December this wasnt so much the case, as once there was a hint of sunshine the park filled up, however normally if it rains into the mid morning the crowds seem to stay away.
Darkbeer we'll be looking for you at the Cove bar, its my husbands new favorite place to snack!!!
jamielj 01-22-2008, 12:43 PM Three years ago when we went to Disneyland in February, our rainy day was our most fun and the one that made the most memories. We were wearing thin Dollar Tree ponchos as it sprinkled. Then it started raining more, so we decided to get soaked on Grizzly River Run then go back to our hotel to dry off and have an early dinner. We went on GRR 4 times in a row with no lines, got drenched, then laughed all the way back to our hotel.
It was during the time that they had all the huge Mickey statues all over the park. On our way back to the hotel, the 9 of us had our picture taken with the statue of Mickey in yellow raingear and yellow umbrella. Half of us were Oregonians. That picture has been our computer's screensaver for 3 years. It makes us smile every time we look at it!
I don't think I would like rain all 5 days that we are visiting, but one day of rain can definitely be overcome by good attitudes.

Rain is another experience at DL!
KerTggr 01-23-2008, 12:03 PM If it is supposed to be "rain on & off" or "scattered showers" try getting fast passes when some of the outside rides are open in the am (like thunder mountian). If the ride shuts down later in the day during your window, and reopens when the rain stops, you can still use your pass. Plus you'll breeze right by the others who run there once opened.
DisneyJenn 01-23-2008, 07:48 PM I leave tomorrow for 2 days at the park (totally excited) and have been concerned about the rain! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted because I have been a little curious. It actually hasn't been raining here in Seattle, but they expect snow while I am gone!
I plan on buying a hat and wearing that (good excuse for a souvenir)!!!
Gotta get up at 4:15am!
ILoveDisneyMagic 01-23-2008, 07:58 PM I'll send you my rainy day predictions good karma. We were there for the "big storm" earlier this month, and although it rained some, it was really easy to work around and the early predictions of rain kept the crowds away. Have a great trip!!!

We also were there for the "big storm" and my son and his friend's favorite thing was riding GRR over and over again in the rain!!! You also have to try Screamin' in the rain - it is quite an experience!
Definitely go and as everyone said, bring ponchos (we prefer ponchos so we can put them over our backpacks.
Have fun!
Niwel 01-24-2008, 04:55 PM We'll be there Saturday -- looking forward to it! DH and I are going to hit the "inside stuff" in our quest for a "dream" prize (see blog).
One tip: bring an extra pair of socks with you. There is nothing worse than wet socks. :)
