View Full Version : Countdown Timer wee-haggis 08-18-2002, 12:00 PM Can we do a countdown timer in this forum? efoxx 08-21-2002, 02:44 PM ????? 5 4 3 2 1 Traci 08-21-2002, 04:48 PM I've seen those too on other boards, they are really neat, I'd like to set one up for my WDW vacation countdown. Bill Catherall 08-22-2002, 08:10 AM wee-haggis - What kind of a timer are you talking about? How do you plan on displaying it here? In your signature? In a post? Does it use images or text? Would it require using HTML in your signature or post? If you want an answer we'll need more detail. Thanks. :) wee-haggis 08-22-2002, 03:24 PM Originally posted by Bill Catherall wee-haggis - What kind of a timer are you talking about? How do you plan on displaying it here? In your signature? Thanks. :) I believe it is HTML.......I used it on two other Disney forums. It is embedded into the signature and shows up every post I make with a countdown timer indicating how long to my next visit to WDW. Then you'd have to convince the admins to enable HTML in signatures. ;) Currently it's turned OFF. Personal Opinion: Don't Turn On HTML Not only can they stick pics in there, it also slows down the board. :) Tony 08-22-2002, 04:38 PM Originally posted by Bill Catherall Then you'd have to convince the admins to enable HTML in signatures. ;) Currently it's turned OFF. And for the forseeable future, it will remain off. HTML isn't so much a drag on the board (though it can cause that), but it IS a serious security issue. There have been a number of boards that allowed HTML that had malicious code embedded in it. For that (and many other reasons), I just don't anticipate enabling HTML anytime soon. I should also say that they have it set up so that it can accept nothing else but the counter (ie:its not a free-for-all with attachments or avatars). Lacrosse Boy 08-22-2002, 10:34 PM I say leave it off. That counter thing I think is kinda dumb. HTML should be off, not everyone has broadband or DSL, and i am willing to bet that if it were on, people would satrt posting "webpages," or "intensive graphics" etc. On my website, I have HTML turned off in the public areas of the board where members can post. However, I may find it useful for the "Administrator" and "Staff" user groups to use. This is all to protect the site. I know of a case on a website where HTML was turned on, and a hacker hacked in through a public forum. I know there's a pic of at at http://www.rctmatch.com. Very ineresting stuff. Why would anyone WANT to hack into a board anyways. Why would people do such bad stuf anyhow? Dont they have lives? BUILD, don't DESTROY! I should also say that they have it set up so that it can accept nothing else but the counter (ie:its not a free-for-all with attachments or avatars). wee-haggis, Tony and I have chatted about this, and we both agree that it's something we would like to make available, so long as concerns about security and system performance can be addressed. (And as long as it does not require hacking the VB code - that's something we won't do.) If you have more info about how this works on the other boards you visit, please drop Tony a note (tony@mouseplanet.com), and you two can discuss it. Thanks! AVP wee-haggis 08-23-2002, 03:59 PM Thanks AVP...I've forwarded a link to Tony. HB Tigger Fan 08-23-2002, 05:36 PM A counter that could be done safely without exposing the board to any hacks would be awesome. It helps build excitment for those going on a trip, and for those helping them plan :) wee-haggis 08-23-2002, 06:03 PM ITA.....HB Tigger Fan... I can't understand why someone would knock it? Lacrosse Boy 08-23-2002, 09:12 PM Well, I don't like it. If you like it, that's cool. But I'd like to disable it. I am of the kind of people that hate animated images and suc. I like clean, easy interfaces without a lot of clutter. So don't mind me. If it is implanted, I'd like to be able to turn it OFF, but I am certain that would require a hack, (I know from experience that hacks are often best left alone, I tried to install one on the message board that I setup for my website, it screwed everything up, so I reverted to the original board settings. It was a clickkable cells hack, and everything messed up, and it's not worth it. |
