View Full Version : When to go? [August or New Years]
mazzie 01-17-2008, 05:53 AM Hi guys, following on from Jimmy1's questions about the time of year, I would love to hear from any of you that have travelled to the world at the end of August and/or New Years.
DF is 50 September 2, so we did want to go around the end of August say 28/29 and stay 2 weeks for his birthday. Then New Years came this year and we were sat at home not doing anything, and the idea came up that it might be nice to see the new year in at WDW. I have travelled there 5 Sept and 5 Dec so I know about the weather, but what about the crowds? Is New Years that busy that it would just spoil it or is it worth going?
Any advice/tips would be greatly received. Thanks guys. Have a great day :)
tappenfeat 01-17-2008, 05:58 AM New Year's is insane that time of year! We went in December, but stayed away from the Christmas break crowds. September is one of our favorite times to go even though it's hot and it rains just about everyday...we love the low crowd level.
The end of August is HOT! And previously I remember reading that families like to squeeze in a quick trip before school starts, but I know for sure right after Labor Day it's like, "Helllllloooooooooooo? anybody here?"

WDW heart 01-17-2008, 08:45 AM I have no desire to be in Disney for New Years. I don't mind moderate crowds but I go to great lengths to avoid the busiest days. July 3rd & 5th were pretty crazy. We made the July 4th a resort day. I would by far pick the August dates. Most schools are in by then. However, I don't mind the heat so I'm at an advantage.
mazzie 01-18-2008, 05:24 AM Thanks for your replies. I dont mind the heat, being from the UK we dont see to much of it so its very welcome! I have been to WDW on 5 September before so weather isnt a worry just crowds. Although we are there for 2 weeks, we are travelling a fair distance and I dont want to pay all that money for a vacation that we will wish we hadnt done.
By the way, excuse my ignorance when is Labor Day?
tappenfeat 01-18-2008, 05:29 AM This Year Labor Day is on September 1st...which means most Northern Schools return back to their Fall Schedule.
Although, WOW! Can you believe Sept. 1st is Labor Day??? That's early! Usually it floats around the 4th and the kids go back to school on the 6th. Wow-weee! :(
steamboatpookster 01-18-2008, 09:40 AM Forget New Year's--it's way to crowded. We went a few weeks ago and it was fun, but...I don't think I want to do it again. I can't handle that many people in one place. IT'S CRAZY!
rph13 01-21-2008, 09:32 AM New Years Eve is Fun at WDW but if you are not a regular at the parks, I think the crowds can be very distracting. And we have found that in the last couple of years with the marathon being run shortly after new years the crowds don't die down as much as they use to. People come for NYE and stick around for the marathon weekend.
This year Jan 2 and 3 did NOT get out of the 40's temp wise, so be advised that it can be cold in Florida around NYE.

Labor Day is the first Monday in September and usually about when most schools here that follow the Sept- June schedule start back for the year.
mazzie 01-22-2008, 05:57 AM Thanks for all your replies, its much appreciated.
We had a long chat and decided to avoid New Years. Weather wise its still warmer than here, but have decided to go in August for DF's birthday, so we have booked for then.
We travel across the pond on 30 August for 2 weeks and I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :):):)
Again, thanks for your input it has helped.
Do you guys do anything special for Labor Day?

Not really -it's the 'last day of summer' to a lot of kids especially, so there's often picnics/going to the beach/that sort of thing. But no big fireworks or 'special meals' that would affect you at WDW.
