View Full Version : Rainy Day Fun?
Nate & Ava's Mommy 01-14-2008, 04:33 PM We are headed to WDW for the FIRST time next week. We have been looking at the weather and it is supposed to have showers 4 out of the 7 days we are there. I know some Fla. showers do not last all day but can someone give us some tips for rainy day fun?
We have bought rain ponchos and will be going to the Parks (MK, etc) as long as the rides are running. It is me, hubby and 2 kids ages 6 and 4.
We have character dinners, etc just looking for other suggestions besides our indoor hotel pool.
Thanks everyone!
Mousellaneous 01-14-2008, 06:55 PM As long as you don't mind getting wet, you shouldn't find many rides that are closed due to rain. Thunderstorms can be more of a difficulty, but I can only remember a handful of times that rainstorms caused major delays. If it really starts to pour, usually there are rides or shows that are nearby where you can grab some shelter. Another options you might think about is Disneyquest, but I'll leave that to more experienced participants to describe that.

The only advice I would give you about rain in the parks is to avoid AK. My wife and I went to AK on Christmas day in 2004 while it was raining. We thought that the rain ponchos and umbrellas would be enough but it wasn't even close. We realized that AK doesn't have a lot of protection from the rain like the other parks. After 2 hours we went back to the hotel to get warm and dry.
ericles 01-15-2008, 05:23 AM here is a vote FOR AK in the rain!
We're going on Friday.... First thing I can tell you is don't sweat the weather, it's gonna change to some degree. It already has (I am anal, I've been checking the weather daily, too!) This is our 4th trip with the kidos, and we've kinda fallen into the habit of going to AK on our first full day - and it has rained on our first day at WDW every time! It's kinda like our own crappy tradition!!! ha ha, anyway, we always go to AK - we all have ponchos & good attitudes - the rain keeps a good bit of the crowds away, and no matter what it's always warmer than when you leave PHL the day before;)
As was stated before, unless it's a full on thunderstorm with lightning you are good to go. For what it's worth, we always go to WDW in January and while it's not uncommon to have a day start out as a bit rainy, we've never (knock wood) had a day that was a complete wash out, the sun always comes out, or at least it stops raining for the majority of the afternoon/evening.
Have a great time - travel safe
DorkySka 01-15-2008, 08:46 AM My vote is for DisneyQuest, but only if it's included in your passes. I would never pay the close to $40 for entry again, but this time it is included in my Park Hopper, and I think it will be a fun late night/rainy day activity.

about Disney Quest:
Last time we were there our boys were 8 & 10 and they loved it...in fact, they are really looking forward to going there again. But with kids, I wouldn't go unless it was a weekday morning as they seem to be the least crowded. It's a big place, can be loud and just imagine what it's like when it's Friday ngiht and filled up with teenagers/young adults
ericles 01-15-2008, 10:11 AM have you checked the weather...it's getting warmer:cool:
Mooshu 01-15-2008, 03:28 PM I was just there and it poured for about 2 hours after the marathon. We had ponchos walked into epcot while everyone was fleeing the heavy down pour....we went into innoventions, went on a couple of rides (no wait) and you can watch the shows in Canada, France, US...etc. No lines...but once the sun came back out..so did the crowds. :p
WDW heart 01-15-2008, 04:12 PM I have found that Orlando weather is unpredictable. I tried to plan my day around weather reports but it never did what it was supposed to. Now we just ignore the weather reports, go ahead with our plans. If it rains, we play it by ear. Sometimes it works in your favor. We were heading into AK late one day when there was a big downpour. Lasted about 45 minutes. We went into It's tough to be a Bug. When we came out, the park had emptied out, the weather was completely cleared up and we didn't wait in any lines the rest of the day.
KJSJpipe 01-15-2008, 05:03 PM We always just keep going about our day. The only thing the rain does is thin the herd!
Last October when I was on the phone with a friend she says "is it raining there'? I said yeah, how did you know? 'I can hear all the people screaming and running around'! It's true alot of people panick, I don't know why...maybe they melt when they get wet? ;)
