Yeah! oh Yeah! I finally did it! Here's the plan:
Leave Austin on August 1
Arrive at Pop Century on August 3
PLAY PLAY PLAY - now I just need to figure out what to do with our 7 days (assuming that 8/3 and 8/9 are half days)
Depart August 9
Arrive in Austin August 12.
Now...here's what I need to figure out.
It's me and my son (14)
I grew up at DisneyLAND - so ... yes ... I bleed disney if you cut me! But this is our first trip to WDW so...what do I do? Where do we spend our time?
Most importantly...we are purchasing the disney dining package...so...WHERE DO WE EAT?!?
You guys are wonderful and I look forward to all your future help. You've gotten me this far! Thanks again!:p

For this item, please take a look at the WDW:Good Eats (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/forumdisplay.php?f=68) forum as you will most likely get some ideas from there. (But a quick tip... do book your ADR's 180 days in advance!!)
As for what to do... if you are a DLR regular, the MK will have many of your fave's and variations of the some of the same rides and attractions. But you will notice that it is much larger than DLR, so be prepared to walk. I would say start out at one of the other parks to see sights that you have never seen before. Then mix in time at the MK to some more familiar sights.
Just off the top of my head... I would consider Epcot or Studios as a first park and then try out MK and then AK. Just be prepared for it to be HOT so you will want to start early and possibly take advantage of evening hours as well.
We also found that for August, it was well worth getting the Water Parks and More option. It more than paid for itself with a trip each to BB and TL.
I would also consider using touringplans.com or tourguidemike.com to help you plan out your days. It will be rather busy during that time as well.

Hi, have a great time! Do you and your son like thrills or more sedate attractions? Are you "nerds" (like me)? As as far as food (GusMan's right, there's a lot of good info in Good Eats), do you guys like basic American stuff or do you like to try new things and enjoy ethnic cuisine? And how much time do you like to be sitting in a restaurant as opposed to out doing the attractions?

With the water parks and more option you also have admission to Disney Quest which your son would {probably} enjoy. Its not just an arcade!:)

Terri,
My family and I recently took a trip to WDW. If we were to go back, we would skip Teppan Edo's (quite disappointing, especially for the price) as well as a place in the former Disney/MGM park across but tucked away from Lights, Motors, Action. I can't remember the name of that quick service place, but I do remember that it had a really long name. We definitely would revisit Liberty Tree Tavern in the Magic Kingdom and Flame Tree BBQ in Animal Kingdom. If we stayed at Wilderness Lodge again, we also would revisit Whispering Canyon Cafe and Roaring Fork. We were also pleased with the character breakfasts at the Contemporary and The Crystal Palace--- the food at Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary was really good. Even though your son may think he's "too old" to go to a character breakfast, it's really tasty. Plus, if you get reservations at The Crystal Palace before the park opens, you'll be able to take a special entrance into the park before the hoards of people get in. That means that you'll be able to take some really great photos of the castle and whatever else without a bunch of bodies and heads in the way!!

As a fellow DisneyLAND veteran, I can say that what is most surprising is the sheer SIZE of WDW. At the DLR, you can walk between the 2 parks, DTD, and the hotels.
But WDW is HUGE! There are very few (if any) places you can walk between. For our first trip we didn't fully realize the traveling aspect of getting from hotel to park, to DTD, to water park etc.
For food, my favorites are:
Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner is a character meal, the food is very good)
Flame Tree at AK
Le Cellier at EPCOT (my favorite restaurant not just in WDW, but anywhere! and good to do on the dining plan because otherwise it would cost a fortune!)
My family loved the water parks (especially Typhoon Lagoon) and DisneyQuest. I bet your son would really like the "virtual Space Mountain" where you can design AND RIDE your own roller coaster. It was so much fun.
