View Full Version : Water from grocery delivery - savings?
scoobydooby 01-05-2008, 03:55 PM We will be visiting in August and, I'm sure, be drinking gallons of water at the parks. Family of 4 and I'm guessing we'll get through at least 10 litres a day. Is doing a grocery stop en route from the airport (not fun after a flight from the UK) or ordering in from a grocery delivery service going to be worth the saving or will it be much the same cost to just buy as we use? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but the cost of things is different in the US and I'm struggling to make a reasoned judgement. None of us will be drinking anything else but water for 2 weeks apart from when in the hotel room when I'll be downing pints of tea and DH the odd coffee. Kids don't touch fizzy pop.
emmah 01-05-2008, 04:45 PM hi there, i did the calculations for us (two adults, ten days from late jan) and decided it was definitely worth the bother; we drink about 4 litres a day which to buy in the parks would cost about $20 a day, compared to $5 from greengrocer (we have ordered 10 of the big 3 gallon bottles). We are also ordering some breakfast cereals and yoghurt and milk, and some snack foods, since we were already ordering the water so it seemed like a good plan. If it was only for a couple of days like a DLR trip we wouldn't bother, but since we are there for ten days it really does add up.
mom22gls 01-05-2008, 06:25 PM It is worth the savings, when you figure that each person will (or should) be drinking several bottles a day. Many of us like a quick breakfast in the room, and you can also order cereal, snacks, etc. In addition, I have also ordered liquid toiletries like sunscreen, to be delivered to the room, because these types of items can add significant weight to your checked luggage. Before you leave, you can place your order online with www.gardengrocer.com, and even pay for it, and they will deliver it to your hotel on the day you check in, at a reasonable delivery charge.
GusMan 01-05-2008, 08:34 PM Going off of what the others said, I would surely do the delivery service if at all possible but do use the opportunity to get other items that you might need for your trip. But one thing to keep in consideration is how much to buy. You dont want to have leftovers either.
At times, we have been known to refill our water bottles at the parks and use flavoring packets to give us some variety as well.
scoobydooby 01-06-2008, 01:53 PM Thank you :)
Drince88 01-06-2008, 02:09 PM Something to keep in mind when deciding how much to buy - are you going to want to bring more than a bottle or two into the parks with you? Water can get heavy, especially if one person is carrying most of it in a backpack. If you can get a bottle holder for each of the kids so that they're carrying their own at least at the start of the day, that might help out some.
Just something to keep in mind!
scoobydooby 01-06-2008, 02:15 PM Although DD will be six we'll probably have a buggy so should be able to lug gallons around. Ended up with a double buggy last time and DS was 8! Mostly both children walked but very useful for groaning moments and legging it to the next ride if necessary. Also, DH very patient pack horse - everyone should have one ;)

I just went onto the garden grocer site but giving them my post code (zip code) isn't going to work. Presumably I use the resort zip code I want stuff delivered to?
Kwahati 01-07-2008, 12:42 PM For the delivery location, you can simply select your Disney Resort Hotel from a drop down menu and it'll fill in all necessary fields. I love Garden Grocer. I, too, go through a lot of water and the savings in water alone makes it worth it. Some bagels and cream cheese and fruit etc. is just icing on the cake... :)
scoobydooby 01-07-2008, 03:00 PM Problem is I can't register to ths site it seems with a UK address - only gives drop down choices for US areas on registration form.

That's what it looks like to me. There is a phone number and an email address on the registration page, though (off to the side) - I'd send them an email (since it wouldn't be toll free for you) and see if you can get registered even though you aren't in the U.S.
mzloolue 01-07-2008, 03:26 PM I called garden grocer and asked what to do for you.
Their customer service is 1 866 855 4350.
The lady said to enter your regular address, but in the space where it says state to just leave it as Florida.
For shipping, put the address of where it should be delivered.
When you get to the payment part, choose print and call and then call them and give them your cc info.
Hope this helps!

That was incredibly kind of you. Thank you - :) :)
mcky fan 01-10-2008, 03:19 PM I would also suggest getting a refillable water bottle that also filters the water as you drink it. Brita use to make a filtered sports bottle. Last summer I purchased a filtered water bottle at a sporting goods store and it was a great investment. We were at Disney World in mid-July and it was a life savers. Any on the food stands that sell fountain drinks will give you ice water and with the filtered bottle, it tastes just like drinking bottled water and for a lot less.
tdelaney_98 01-12-2008, 09:38 PM For what it's worth, Scoobydooby, I used GardenGrocer.com on the last trip and ABSOLUTELY loved it. It was worth every penny, the fruit was of great quality, and the bags were packed well.
They arrived before I did, and POFQ had refrigeration available and had my perishables in their fridge. I had bell services bring it up when I arrived and they were at the door within 8 minutes of calling downstairs.
WONDERFUL option!

Thanks Tina - I'm definately sold on this if I can make it work from across the pond. So now for one of my English person type questions. I will be wanting fruit (must be the same everywhere ;) ), sliced white bread, butter, cornflakes, coco pops, rice krispies, special K and marmite. Do you recognise our cereals??! I'm guessing marmite is a no go.
KJSJpipe 01-13-2008, 08:19 AM We have all the cereals, bread, butter...marmite probably not. It would not hurt to ask though seeing as there seems to be a huge concentration of Engish people in the area visiting the parks, some stores may stock some of 'your' foods.
mzloolue 01-13-2008, 02:21 PM You could always go native and substitute peanut butter.:)

Yeah, I'm thinkin marmite is out. :p However, check out their website. Everything they have is listed there.
BTW, I have a HECK of a time finding McVite's biscuits here. I hate to pay for shipping! Argh!
Isn't the tap water in Florida potable? -- sorry, not from the US:)
Drince88 01-29-2008, 03:48 AM Isn't the tap water in Florida potable? -- sorry, not from the US:)
Yes - but that just means safe to drink. It often times has (to me) a very sulfur-y taste/smell to it that, even though I CAN drink it, would keep me from drinking as much as I needed to health-wise.
mazzie 01-29-2008, 06:10 AM We call into Walmart and buy water and take it with us. Last time we went it was really hot, so I froze the water, that way I had a nice cold drink for quite a while to drink.
You have been several times and I am sure I dont need to tell you that anything like water carriers etc are far cheaper to buy in Walmart there than before you leave the UK.
We never do anything the day after we arrive, except visit DTD later in the afternoon so we use the morning to make a trip to Walmart and stock up. Hey I even buy my hair conditioner there because the one I use is £2 more here than in the US!
scoobydooby 01-29-2008, 02:24 PM Mazzie - how far away is the Wallmart - we won't have a car. The cost of a taxi might do away with any savings we'd make?
witch91 01-31-2008, 12:20 PM I'm from the UK as well, and i thought this sounded like a great idea as we aren't hiring a car so other then taxi wouldn't really be able to do a shopping trip ourselves. I checked the website to see what we could get etc and noticed that there is a minimum spend of $50. This seems like quite a lot to get some water and other bits and pieces, and if you are spending extra just to be able to get stuff delivered surely you may as well buy the water in the park?
If anyone knows of any other websites that could be ordered from let me know because i still think it's a brilliant idea in principle :)
Drince88 01-31-2008, 12:31 PM I've heard of people using wegoshop.com as well. I just looked and couldn't find a minimum order amount, but there is an email address.
For a long stay, though, I can see going through $50 fairly quickly. Some fruit, crackers, chips (crisps, I think to those in the U.K), water, shampoo/conditioner/sunscreen.
On the shampoo/conditioner, though -they're likely to just have 'grocery store brands' not 'salon brands' - so make sure you look into that if you have a specific brand you want!
