View Full Version : Canadian buying a DVC!
disneycanuk 01-02-2008, 04:52 PM My Family and I go to disneyland every year (sometimes twice) for the last four years, and everytime I look at the dvc booths. Last time down I bit the bullet and went to a session and listened it sounds like a great system but was wondering is it worth it when we mostly go to disneyland the points seemed good and it could be a good push to go to disneyworld (akl would be the home I think). and they can't do anyting else while I'm in canada stupid laws sometimes. I used the spreadsheet i found on here and it makes it worth while by the way i think.
So my questions are:
IS it worth it using it primarly to visit disneyland? (i love the disney hotel and from working in the industry, i love the way they treat people and the extras they have)
The offers the lady talked to me about differ from which I read hear the developer points. She offered a point dollar off deal if you purchase while there. Should I ask when I go back for the ones i read here?
is there any canadians here that have dvc and are they worth it?
And is it worth it staying at the DVC in disneyland seeing as they are building now some units?
the financing part if i put 30% down is it a good deal and all the perks they give you?
Thanks anyone for help as I'm leaving monday and think I might bite it and buy in but thought to try and ask others for opions first and from what i read eberyone loves this DVC
DVC Mike 01-02-2008, 05:14 PM I am a happy DVC member. As long as you see yourself going to DLR or WDW every two years, and you typically stay in a nice resort when you're there, then DVC may make sense for you.
They are currently building the Grand California Villas at DLR. It looks to be fantastic! I am planning on buying some points at GCV.
If you buy in now in California, you will have first right to purchase some points at GCV.
You should definitely ask your guide what the current sales incentives are.

In my opinon, no. The reasoning behind this is that the best value you will get out of your points is by using them for a DVC resort at WDW, Vero, or HHI. At least until DVC opens up on the West Coast, that is...

While offers sometimes vary, for me in August, I could have had dollars off OR developers points. We chose the developers points as they gave us a load of them and for our plans, they were going to be worth more than the dollar off amount. But you would have to choose what is best for you and your situation.

While not from Canada, I dont think you will find anyone around here that would say that the DVC is not worth it. :)
And is it worth it staying at the DVC in disneyland seeing as they are building now some units?
If you have your heart set on going to DLR every year, than you might want to wait until they start selling the GCVillas. I say that because there will be a limited number of rooms and considering the 11 month / 7 month booking rules, you might not be able to get in at the 7 month window.
the financing part if i put 30% down is it a good deal and all the perks they give you?
To me, financing and the perks are two different things. I found that once I finalized my deal, it was easy to finance with them. However, I am not sure if there are different options for those living outside of the US. You would have to ask your guide.
I hope that helps. Please feel free to pass along any other questions.
disneycanuk 01-02-2008, 05:50 PM thanks for all the help gusman, I'll keep in mind the gcvillas in mind we are hoping to travel to wdw next year for my sons 13 bday so thats the main reason I'm thinking of this as I sat down and noticed how much I spent on hotels over the last few years going back and forth and just realized the "extra fees" on the bills really adds up and someone had said you don't pay those when a DVC member? sweet if so but anyhow figured it might be a worth while venture
again thanks for everything can hardly wait to go south again

Not sure what "fees" you are talking about, but you do still have to pay an annual maintenance fee which is related to the number of points you have and which you resort you own. Once you pay off the cost of the membership, it can equate to quite a bit of savings overall.
disneycanuk 01-03-2008, 07:49 AM ahh you know resort fee, bed tax other taxes and all that it really adds up after a week.
Resort fees, bed tax, etc are not charged when you are staying on points.
CalgaryMouser 01-14-2008, 05:45 AM Every year that we go to DLR, we see the booths and wonder whether it would be worth it. We think that it would be worth it given how much we spend when we do go. By nature, we are not great travelers and DLR is usually a treat where we budget to spend more. Our big problem is the fact that we have to make the purchase when we are in the US (once a year) and we are a little nervous about that much money being spent without legal review. We have a time share in Canada and with the restrictions and difficulty booking popular resorts, sometimes the the trip is determined by what is available than what we want.
bwanabob 01-14-2008, 06:50 AM We have 400 points, bought 300 in 1995 and 100 add-on in 1999 with Old Key West as our home resort. I agree with what has been said in that the points are only worthwhile if you go at least once every 2 years and like to stay in a nice resort. If you go during Easter, Christmas or the summer it is critical your points be in the resort you want to stay in. If you go in the off-season, I would recommend choosing a resort with the lowest maintenence fees as you can easily get reservations in any of the Disney resorts during the off-season. While we have used the points outside of Disney, I don't think that's very cost effective. But once in a while is not an issue. You can buy points in resorts that are sold out by going to time-share resales agents and there is no problem doing this. But if you do this get all the details on what points are still available (they may have borrowed against future points)? Good luck!
disneycanuk 01-23-2008, 10:48 PM yeah i agree with you calgarymouser (funny thats where i live, if your in calgary) but after looking back at how much i spend a year going to disneyland and staying at thier hotels and the taxes i looked at on the last bills i'm thinking it would be a good move i talked to the lady at dvc that is looking after me and found out about the grand villas and it would be nice to use them once they are up, and we do plan on visiting disneyworld and so in the future, and after using the spread sheet whoever came up with thank you i think it help in my choice catch is now I have an excuse to go back to disneyland.
