View Full Version : Big Storm for the weekend?
renodlandlover 12-31-2007, 05:42 AM I'm in MN, heading to Reno Wednesday (that's home) and planning to drive to the Happiest Place on Wednesday afternoon - when I read the local forecast, weather looks horrible - biggest snowfall in perhaps 50 years I just read! So, a couple of questions - does the local weather look horrible for this weekend, and has anyone driven a different route from this area (Northern NV) to Anaheim than I-80 to the 5? (Like 395/140)
Hope you all have a wonderful New Year's Eve! :D

BIRDGIRLS 12-31-2007, 07:53 AM Well. The weather channel said to expect winds up to 30 mph last night.
Where were the winds?
Rain is supposed to start on Thursday, I heard right now it's at about 50% chance of rain. It's also supposed to rain Friday thru Sunday. I'm hoping for no Thursday rain.. my and my bf are supposed to go to Disneyland on Thursday. With both our busy schedules.. that's the only day we can go. =/
Infinitely 12-31-2007, 08:26 AM Right now here (Reno) the weather looks great. I had no idea about the storm until I went to weather.com....ha ha ha ha.
We went to Disneyland week before last and we went through Yerington/Bishop and on the way home there was some snow, but nothing much on the roads. Look at it this way, if the storm is really bad, you can just extend your trip ;)
Infinitely 12-31-2007, 08:30 AM I JUST saw the news….one of the biggest Sierra storms in years….three storms one Thursday one Friday one Saturday….5 to 10 FEET in the Sierra’s. We should be rain down in the valleys Thursday and Friday, then snow on the weekend…because you know, the temperatures drop to freezing.
Be CAREFUL!
Have fun!

That was my first thought!!!! :)

That was what freaked me out. We have to cancel our hotel 48 hours out if we need to, so....... my hubby (bless him!) said we could just stay one more day! :D

renodlandlover 01-01-2008, 06:04 AM Any updates from locals or folks there about the weather this weekend? Looks like much rain from all the web sites I visited (weather.com, weatherunderground, weather.gov). I guess we should buy some ponchos? Think they will get sold out? 70% chance of rain makes it seem pretty likely.

adriennek 01-01-2008, 10:36 AM I haven't been paying attention to details but the weather reports down here are saying rain starting Thursday and through the weekend.

houseofmouse 01-02-2008, 03:38 PM Take ponchos and umbrellas and warm clothes, you can still have a great time!! :)
nursemelis374 01-02-2008, 03:43 PM I am hearing the same things regarding rain starting Thursday and lasting through Sunday, seems like it is going to rain pretty hard too!
I think it will be a bit of a bummer to have rain but at least you can still have a great time at the parks. Ponchos and umbrellas are best in my opinion. I also always bring a plastic bag or ziploc to put my really important stuff in so that it doesn't get wet in my backpack. Bring extra socks and shoes too so that you don't get stuck with wet ones!
Have fun!
ILoveDisneyMagic 01-02-2008, 06:13 PM Ponchos... check
Umbrellas... check
Positive attitude... check
:crying: if I get drenched on Main Street and don't get to see snow :crying:
PhiSigDuchessCV 01-02-2008, 08:33 PM This morning's weather report said that Friday/Saturday will be the heaviest rain, probably the heaviest we have seen in a few years. Coastal areas are expected to get from 3 to 8 inches with the storms that are coming in starting tomorrow night.
Even if it rains still plan on being in the parks with your ponchos on and the umbrellas. The parks tend to empty out and you can get on all the rides.
As someone said, bring extra socks and shoes. maybe even a change of pants just in case you hit puddles. You can leave them in the locker for when you may need them.
ILoveDisneyMagic 01-02-2008, 10:38 PM Thank you!! I bought 14 disposable ponchos, raincoats for the little ones, and also vinyl ponchos for everyone. We also got little umbrellas and boots and lots of socks. I'm going to try to get in as much nighttime entertainment as I can tomorrow night. I'm supposed to do the VIP tour on Friday. Maybe they'll have some advice for us.
Thanks for the update and advice everyone!!!
hmsharpe 01-04-2008, 08:26 AM Can anyone tell me what the weather is like in Anaheim? we are leaving Canada tomorrow for LAX and have heard about a brutal storm coming through CA. I am picturing being stuck at an airport with two preschoolers, only to be followed by days at DL in the pouring rain :eek
adriennek 01-04-2008, 09:05 AM I doubt the rain will be bad enough to cancel any flights. I guess it could happen if it gets foggy on the coast because LAX is right on the beach. But I wouldn't expect it.
The storm was delayed up north so it hasn't quite gotten down here yet. The weather report is showing rain all weekend and Monday.
Adrienne
Toocherie 01-04-2008, 09:05 AM currently it is cloudy; prediction is that the rain will start this afternoon and be heavy through tomorrow (Saturday) with 2-3 inches of rain possible. Sunday should be hit or miss with on and off showers with clearning possibly by Monday.
Spazz 01-04-2008, 02:22 PM I'm up in Northern California and this storm is big. Flights have been delayed/cancelled at San Francisco Airport today and most flights inbound and outbound are cancelled at Sacramento Airport according to our local news due to high winds. We've had gusts up to 83 mph reported. Hopefully the storm will not be that bad once it hits SoCal, but my advice would be to check with your airline before you go to the airport.
sierranevada 01-04-2008, 04:37 PM We are currently at DL and so far the sky looks threatening and has spit a few times but no rain - yet. It definitely looks like it is coming. The crowds are much smaller today than Wed or Thurs., I am sure the threat of the storms is keeping people home. Glad we saw Fantasmic! and Fireworks last night because it is getting windy so it could be cancelled tonight.
Going to go back in the parks soon and use our fastpasses before the rain comes.
Infinitely 01-04-2008, 04:45 PM It is currently flooding here at home (Reno), did you make it out Wednesday? The Rock underpass isn Sparks is closed on 80 do to flooding, terminal way is flooded. All I can say is on your way home pick up a boat for yourself, and an extra one for me as well! :)
dsnyredhead 01-04-2008, 04:56 PM We're in the San Fernando Valley. It's been pouring for a while now. I'd prepare for rain in Aneheim.
Infinitely 01-04-2008, 05:15 PM Snow now.
It is very windy and cold as well.
I hope you are having fun at DL!! Drive safely coming home.
renodlandlover 01-04-2008, 07:25 PM This should probably be a trip report, but to fill you all in.....
Our plane, which was supposed to land at noon on Wednesday, landed at 4:45. We left Reno at 7 PM (yes, we are crazy) and drove into the hotel (Carousel) at 3 AM. Whew. Yesterday was wonderful - sunny and lovely and WE WON DREAM FAST PASSES!!!! So, we rode tons of rides, and had a blast. Today, it was cool all day (we all had long sleeves, plus tshirts, plus sweatshirts and light jackets on all day). It started to rain at 5 and now is going great guns! I talked to my neighbor and it sounds very snowy in Reno - no idea how or when we'll be able to get home. Any way - yesterday was so great, I was so glad my hubby said we should go for it. Now, I'm wet and have no extra clothes and would love to be at home.....
:crying:

Infinitely 01-04-2008, 07:42 PM Oh...well, there is still time to have fun. Does the hotel have a gift shop? Maybe they have nice warm sweatshirts, and maybe even pants! If not, can you get someplace near by? Does the hotel have movies you can rent? Room Service? Maybe you can run out really quick get a pizza and some dry clothes (have them double bagged) and come back and have a nice night in the hotel. Last I checked they were telling people not to drive over the mountain passes, in fact to stay home unless it is an emergency.
sierranevada 01-04-2008, 08:32 PM Just got back to the room - it is really starting to rain but no lines for any one brave enough to venture into the parks!
Screamin' and GRR in the rain... what an experience!
adriennek 01-04-2008, 10:44 PM I doubt the rain will be bad enough to cancel any flights. I guess it could happen if it gets foggy on the coast because LAX is right on the beach. But I wouldn't expect it.
KTLA's local 10:00 news just reported that flights are experiencing up to 90 minute delays in arriving to LAX.

Kentenathien 01-05-2008, 07:05 AM SierraNevada, will you be at the parks Sunday, Monday and/or Tuesday? We'll be there. If you see a 6'7", skinny, white guy with facial hair wearing a brown sweater jacket or a blue Adidas jacket w/ white stripes walking with a short, chubby girl with black curly hair... Say hi! :D
