We just checked in today and the room has a computer with free internet access. Seems to be a trial program.

If guests want internet access on their laptops and be wireless there is a charge but even in-room ethernet seems to be free.

Wait, there is actually a computer in the room? That just seems strange.

Desktop or laptop? What manufacturer and model?

Have you tried disconnecting the Ethernet cable from the in-room computer and plugging it in to your laptop?

you can use your own computer, but you'll be charged the $9.95/day (i'm sure the MAC address comes into play)

otherwise, you can use their computer (which is also more like an online concierge system) for free, but it does have various sites blocked (one of which is myspace.com i believe).

Interesting. Good thing it's impossible to change the MAC address on your own hardware. ;)

I'd be interested in learning about what tools they're using to lock it down. Once you have physical control of the box, any restriction can be defeated.

Though I suppose if too many guests crack the system, they'll remove the free PCs altogether.

i'm sure it's all blocked at the firewall level. not sure how locked down the PCs themselves are (and policies can do a good job at that as it is - they can make it so all you can run is IE for example).

of course, unless there's physical security, you can bring a CD that you can download that will let you change the admin's password. but there's really no need for a guest to have access to the PC anyway. if they did it right, it's probably literally just a lightweight net PC.

They've had these in Vegas rooms for some time now. Usually they're some kind of integrated system with the electronics in the screen package, and no drives at all. They're solely for internet access, but that's pretty cool to have for free!
