I called about a rental for a week if we flew down and they priced me at 760.00! Thats the same price I got from NY to rent for 11 days!

Who did you call, when were you looking for, what type of car, and how long before your travel date? And try checking the various companies online.

To add to what CF mentioned, does the quote include insurance and taxes? That alone can add somewhere between $150 and $200 for a weeks rental.

Yikes that is pretty pricey even for 11 days. We rented onsite March 2006 for 10 days, got a minivan and total paid 268.00. This next March I have a rental on hold for 8 days a small SUV and my total with tax is $305.00.
Check all the rental places online and check Costco.com for rental discount codes! I never call directly they definitely don't quote the best deals over the phone.

I've been looking at a 12 day rental from Alamo for the end of January. I have it down to around $170 for a compact, that's including the taxes and fees, no insurance. The prices weren't good yesterday, but I think they'll go down again after the holidays are over. The same thing happened at Thanksgiving with our airline rate. It went up $500 for the holiday period, and then dropped down after it was over. Make sure you go to mousesavers.com for all the latest discount codes, they sure help.

Go to expedia.com and check out all the rates. I just enjoyed a midsize car for a week for around $150 from Dollar, right there at the airport. I don't know what kind of car you're renting or from which company, but you're getting ripped!

I've got a full size car reserved for 2 weeks starting this Sat from Budget with my BJs code for $244.66 plus taxes & fees makes it $322.23. I would check Mousesavers for discount codes and check online with the different companies and codes. The quote you got was much too high. We always rent from Budget with codes online and use Fastbreak to avoid the lines and go right to the garage. I have used Thrify and Dollar before for good rates. Check online rather than calling cuz that quote will be triple.

Supply & demand, if there are cars available they would rather rent them cheaply than have them sit. So I make a new reservation and cancel the old one if it is worthwile savings, just make sure of the cancellation policy.

I usually always book from National because they are on site and you don't have to wait in line if you're an Emerald Card member. I always seem to get cheaper rates closer to the actual rental date so even if you get quoted a high rate, keep checking and you should be able to do better. Definitely book online if you can and I echo the sentiment about checking out Mousesavers - helps me every time!

We got a Dollar rental from MCO Dec. 06 for $244.00 for 9 days.

I've been checking their rates again to get an idea for a trip in Sept. and it's still about the same depending on specials.
