Hello All gamers...
This may sound like a silly question, but can you play Halo 3 on playstation 2?
I feel like Playstation 3 came out right after i purchased playstation 2, so I am refusing to purchase a new station. But dh wants all these cool new games that I'm sure are for playstation 3.
Do you think it will run? Has anyone tried this?

nope, halo3 isn't available for the ps2 nor the ps3. it's an xbox exclusive.

oh bummer.... ok, well, what about the question in general then to playstation games?

Not sure what you mean here, but we'll see if this works: The Playstation 2 can play any game designed for the Playstation 2 or the original Playstation. There's actually about 6(?) games for the original Playstation that won't work on it, but they're five old, obscure titles and Final Fantasy Anthology. (We had a list in my store and I had only heard of half the titles.) Your husband should find a few things he likes in the thousands of titles released for those two systems.

If you attempt to place a disc designed for another system into the Playstation 2, the machine won't be able to read it. It's not like a PC where not meeting the system requirements may cause the software to run sluggishly. It's more like BetaMax/VHS where they are totally incompatible.

Hope that helps.

if you're looking for a first person shooter type of game, I hear "call of duty" is a good one. it's available for the ps2 (at least call of duty 3 is...not sure about the latest call of duty 4).

Ok, so if i understand correctly, I can't buy a game made for playstation 3 and use it in my playstation 2.

I just figured that i could and it would just run slower or something.

My recommendation, if your DH really wants a PS3, is to pick up the new 40GB PS3 that was released. It's listed at $399.99 and comes with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray.

Here's the part where it gets a little tricky. Keep the PS2 that you already have and pick up the 40GB PS3. "Why would I need both?" you might ask. The original PS3s (the 60GB and 20GB models) were fully backwards-compatible, meaning that they could play PS2 games. However, these have stopped being produced (a store might still have 60GB, but it's a longshot). The new 80GB PS3 Bundle w/ the Motorstorm game is also backward compatible, but it uses software to emulate the old games, rather than hardware emulation like the 60GB and 20GB (simply put, hardware emulation is better). The new 40GB PS3 is NOT backwards compatible; Sony decided to remove that functionality to cut down the cost. The reasoning behind this was simple: People who had a large library of PS2 games already had a PS2, therefore eliminating the need for backward compatibility on the new SKU.

I assume it's too late to return the PS2 and trade-in values for PS2 systems are nowhere near the price what you paid for it. It's unfortunate, but that's probably the best option (unless you can return it). If you CAN still return the PS2, I'd do it and get an 80GB (60GB if you can find one).

That being said, as far as first-person shooters go, Call of Duty 4 is a great shooter and I would recommend that (on the PS3).

For the record: I'm not a PS3 fanboy, I have 360 and a Wii and love them both. Though, I wouldn't mind Blu-ray right about now...LOL.

Sorry for the long post and I hope it didn't confuse you too much. Hope it helped.

Ok, so if i understand correctly, I can't buy a game made for playstation 3 and use it in my playstation 2.

It won't even read the disc. PS2 uses DVDs while the PS3 uses Blu-Ray discs. While a Blu-Ray drive will read regular DVDs, the reverse isn't true.

In addition, there are substantial changes to the overall platform from PS2 to PS3 that it wouldn't know what to do with the software even if it were on a disc that the older player could read. The PS3 will run most PS2 (and even PS1) games via a built-in software emulator, but the native PS3 games are essentially running on a platform that is every bit as different and incompatible as Windows vs. Mac OS on a desktop computer.

The good news is that most of the games available for the PS3 are currently available for the PS2 in some form. (They won't look nearly as good and may be missing some features.) There's simply not a large enough consumer market to develop many titles solely for the PS3 (yet). This will slowly change as more PS3 consoles are sold, but with the growing costs of developing games companies can't afford to limit their sales potential. (Games such as the Halo series are an exception as they are developed by the company that makes the system; in this case Microsoft which produces the XBox and XBox360.)

Thank you all for the information!

It's wayyy too late to return the PS2, and after how much i spent on it, i really, really just can't bear to spend another $400 on a new game system. Hmmm, maybe i should doulbe post this onto the tight-wad thread!

Sheesh though, you'd think that the prices of the PS2 games would drop somewhat!

You would think that would be the case, but developers are still making games for the PS2, so the PS2 is still going to have a good library of software. Also, with the price drop of the PS2 to $129.99, people might start to look at PS2s as alternatives this holiday.

Sheesh though, you'd think that the prices of the PS2 games would drop somewhat!

Prices on PS2 games tend to drop about eight to ten months after release depending on how fast the developer makes it's money back. Sports games drop in price dramatically as soon as the next version is released. There are plenty of good games that came out last year in the $20 rack. (Speaking of the bargain bin, if you're looking for a good driving game, you can't beat Gran Tourismo4.)

Slightly OT but related to the above--Amazon had some available last month (I know 'cuz I was thinking about buying the 60 GB version) but apparently not anymore; looking at the "new and used" links to see what other online retailers were listed as having some in stock, I was amazed to see that pretty much all of them were (still) listing it for $599 or higher--what a joke! Guess they must believe that there are some folks out there who might be willing to pay a premium for the PS2 full h/w compatibility that the 60 GB model offers over the 80 GB version...

For a good first player shoot em up I would recommend Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront 2. Both were great games that I've enjoyed a lot and I don't like first player shoot em ups.
