View Full Version : Tonga Toast
ElephantEars 11-12-2007, 04:56 PM Hi!
I was wondering if Tonga Toast is available anywhere other than Kona Cafe at the Polynesian. Someone mentioned Capt Hooks on another board.
I'm thinking about Kona for dinner, but have been dreaming about Tonga Toast for breakfast too! :(
ElephantEars 11-12-2007, 05:00 PM Hey, I just found the answer to my own question. I was looking all over the internet for Capt Hooks, and it turns out the restaraunt is called Capt Cooks! D'OH!
It looks like I can get tonga toast at a quick service at the Polynesian...copied from the menu on allears:
Tonga Toast - banana-stuffed sourdough bread, battered, deep-fried and dusted with cinnamon and sugar $4.49
Oh Joy...Happy Dance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I need to pray and hope it stays on the menu for June.
Drince88 11-13-2007, 04:50 AM A couple years back we got a banana stuffed French Toast at Boatwrights in Port Orleans Riverside.
dawz1026 11-13-2007, 05:33 AM that sounds so freakin good!!!!:p

It is!
If you've been eating healthier (or trying to!) in real life, you might want to consider what my sister and I do. This breakfast is VERY sweet, plus deep fried. I have yet to hear of anyone who's actually put syrup on it. My sister and I get a Tonga Toast (at the Kona Cafe it comes with meat of your choice) and an egg-potato-meat breakfast, and we split the Tonga Toast and the eggs and potatoes. Even with that, I have really gotten a sugar high (and subsequent dip!) from this breakfast.

Oh my gawd, I can actually hear my arteries clogging right now! I want one! I think this is a perfect excuse to stop by the Polynesian one morning!
Edited to add: I have one roommate who's not so into banana... any chance they also do French toast topped with strawberries or anything like that?

I don't think they could do the Tonga Toast that way, but most places do have 'normal' french toast. Not sure if you can get them with strawberries on top, though. I'd just ask.

I had to laugh. We couldn't decide either. We now have breakfast ADRs for one day and dinner for the next. I actually asked for the latest available breakfast reservation, which was at 11:10. So I'll be having my Tonga Toast for lunch. I just can't eat that much sugar for breakfast!

My name is ElephantEars, so you can imagine how much I enjoy sugary treats at any time of day! My future husband just shakes his head at my diet coke and life cereal breakfasts.
I'm thinking we'll be making multiple stops now to the Poly. One for a quick breakfast at Cooks OOP and one for dinner later that week on the DDP! HMM, should I get a dole whip to top it all off (Sugar Shock!:D)
stan4d_steph 11-13-2007, 07:01 PM Mmmmm. I'm looking forward to having some after the marathon.
ElephantEars 11-14-2007, 10:40 AM Stan4d_Steph, your avatar is the whole reason I've become tonga toast obsessed. I've never had it before, but that picture makes me drool!
bradk 11-18-2007, 03:50 PM versions are also available at rainforest cafe and boatwright's
cstephens 11-18-2007, 05:09 PM So, I guess as with the corn dogs from DL's little red wagon and the monte cristo sandwich, I'm the only person who's not enamoured of tonga toast. I'd heard so much about it, so when we were at Kona Cafe in January, I ordered it for breakfast. After I got my breakfast, the server actually warned me to taste it before putting syrup on it as it can be very sweet. I was glad she said that, because even without the syrup, it was too sweet for my taste. I can't imagine what it would have been like with the syrup. It's not something I'd order again, but that, that means all the more for all of you!
WDW07 11-19-2007, 11:49 AM Is the tonga toast at Captain Hooks as good as the tonga toast served at Kona. We don't have a Kona breakfast worked into our plans this year, but we could definitely swing by the Polynesian for a counter service breakfast if the Tonga toast is comparable.
mckat 11-19-2007, 07:39 PM OK, I love Tonga toast, in about 27 days I will be munching down on its creamy inside, crunch cinimony (so I'm spelling challenged) outside. I will highly!!!! recommend you take your first bite before adding syrup. It is very sweet on its own.
PS I sure miss my favorite Elephant ears at Saturday Market in Portland OR
If you love cinamony (still spelled wrong) elephant ears you are really going to love Tonga Toast!
dawz1026 11-20-2007, 09:10 AM you guys are killing me! I have never had the tonga lol and I am starvin'for somelol:p

Yes, it's every bit as good, and you can sit outside and look at the castle across the lagoon! Alas, you will have to eat it with a plastic fork off of a paper plate, and drink really bad coffee. :p
