My family of 5 are traveling to Disney World for the first time ever. I want to surprise the kids with a lanyard and pins upon arrival. I am looking to buy some pins on ebay to start them off. Is there a difference in pins between Disneyland and Disney World? What are good starter pins? They are into all the boy stuff,Pirates etc.Thanks.

There is no significant difference between WDW and DLR pins except that a lot of them are different. If you are going to buy pins on Ebay, I suggest you stay away from the Sedesma pins which are made in Spain. They are really cheap looking and they are usually sold in bulk lots. Most Ebay sellers who are selling Bulk lots will mention that they are not Sedesma. These pins are usually frowned upon for trading at the parks though they still usually take them. You may be able to find starter sets that include the lanyard on Ebay as well, the parks usually sell several different ones also. There are several different Pirate starter sets available and tons of Pirate pins. You can find a nice primer on Disney pins on the official website. www.odpt.com:)

Here's a great site if you haven't already seen it:
http://eventservices.disney.go.com/pintrading/index
It's the official site for pin trading at the Disney parks. There are some "rules" to go by (more like pin etiquette). Be warned that the little mouse ear backs tend to fall off easily. If you poke the pin through the whole at a slight angle, it will make a nice "new" hole and stick better. That, or you can buy the pricey locking backs. Remember, some CM's have lanyards just for kids to trade! The CM's usually let you pick what you want and give up what you want. Trading with other guests isn't as easy.

Pin collecting is fun . . . but can get $$$! Enjoy your collections! :)

Just FYI, odpt.com is the same website, it stands for official Disney Pin Trading. :)

Beware of the ebay lots. There are alot of people selling fake/ scapper/ bootleg pins on there. Look at the person feed back if they are selling alot of the same pin do not buy. Research is what you need to do. There is another site that is good for Pin ? or buying too if you do not like what you see on the bay. Its called DizPins.com . Pin trading can be fun . We like to trade when there is someone who can not go on the ride. So the parent that sits out with them will take them to the stores to trade and shop.

What resort are you staying at? If you are wary of buying pins on e-bay:

All of the Disney Resorts sell both the pin sets (several different themes) as well as a few different styles of lanyards in the souvineer shop right by the check in counter. Each resort has one, although each shop has a different name (to coincide with the resort name).

What you could do (I have before) is look through the shop, see what the kids like pin wise, then distract them (take them to the food court for a Mickey Ice Cream Bar *I say - mouth drooling*) while Mom or Dad stays behind to make the purchase.

Buy each of the kids a stuffed Mickey too to hold the pins/lanyard, then go and set everything up in the room and go back and get the kids. When you all go back to the room - "Surprise! Look what Mickey has left for you; he knew we were coming today!".......Works for my little guys every time, plus it's really cool to actually make a little of the Disney Magic yourself! :fez::fez:
