View Full Version : Star Tours
dawz1026 11-06-2007, 05:20 AM I have been wanting to go on this for some time but dh always says..go ahead if you want to get sick...anyway...I have been in motion type rides with sense around projection and did fine..Is this one a hairy experience and any feeling of spinning involved??
Cheshire Figment 11-06-2007, 05:47 AM There is no spinning, it is sort of like being in an aircraft during very turbulant conditions.
However, if they are not using all six simulators (lower crowd levels) when you get to the podium you can ask for a "Test Flight" and they will take you and your party to a simulator where they will run everything except the motion.

IMO - that is a perfect description.
Its a fun ride but it can get a little "turbulent" at times. But for comparison, I found Body Wars, which is just a variant of the same ride, to be the one to make me queasy. (From the ride movements, not the images on the screen, that is...)
I would do Star Tours again for sure.
D2000lands 11-06-2007, 06:47 AM The ride is not like a true motion simulator. You feel the seats tilt from side to side and tilt up and down, but it is nothing major. I don't think it would be too much of a problem for you.
However, due to such movements, you may want to really think about it though if you have neck problems, etc. due to the type of movements.
disnut8 11-06-2007, 06:52 AM As others have said, no spinning at all and I would not describe Star Tours as a hairy experience at all. I don't think there are many people who get sick on this attraction. Has your husband ever ridden it before? If he hasn't then the only way to know if this is going to affect you (and I don't think it will be your description of yourself) is to go. And enjoy.
The old man 11-06-2007, 08:47 AM I get nauseous on these types of rides. In diference to GusMan it's actually the ride motion plus the images that gets one sick. That because, for example, the seat might roll to the right while the image on the screen appears to roll to the left. This tricks the brain into thinking that the turn is steeper than it really is. It's at these points that I close my eyes and it reduces the sick feeling I get.
The proof that's it's image not motion can also be found in Space Mountain in the turning light tunnel. The cars are only moving forward but the rotating lights make you feel like you're turning. Again I close my eyes.
This also happens to me at USH on the tram ride when it enters the avalache simulator. The car is only moving forward but the rotating drum that you're inside of really makes me sick.
danyoung 11-07-2007, 08:46 AM The ride is not like a true motion simulator.
While I agree with others here that Star Tours is in no way too violent or "spinny" to ride, I have to dispute this statement. ST is indeed a true motion simulator, one of the first ones outside of airline pilot training simulators.
scoobydooby 11-07-2007, 03:36 PM Ok I'm interested here because this was one of my DS's favourites and I flatly refused to join in (which upset him...) as simulators make me jolly sick for several hours after the event and in the worst case scenario I engage in involuntary silent crying :geek: So; compared to Soarin, which as a simulator woos I rate as a 2 out of 10 on the sick ratio and hugely enjoyable, how would Star Wars score?
The old man 11-07-2007, 03:55 PM 7.5 for me. There is one move (I think it's a roll to the roll) that I'd give a 8.5 but I close my eyes during that part.

Oh thanks - I understand. Will continue to give it a miss!
Drince88 11-07-2007, 06:14 PM I doubt if everyone on this thread will 'get' what I'm about to say, but some of you may....
I always have thought Star Tours should have a warning (if not at the ride, at least in the Unofficial Guide :D) that 'larger chested women should consider wearing sports bras on this attraction'.
danyoung 11-07-2007, 06:45 PM ...compared to Soarin, which as a simulator woos I rate as a 2 out of 10 on the sick ratio and hugely enjoyable, how would Star Wars score?
Well, I don't know what a woos is, but on your scale I'd guess Star Tours would be maybe a 6. It's not a freakin' monster roller coaster - I mean, the format of the ride just can't flip you around or turn you inside out. You simply go with the motion, and the motion, while serious, is in no way over the top or nauseating. It's a terrific attraction, and you owe it to yourself and George Lucas to try it at least once!

I agree, I have no problem riding Star Wars, but got sick on Body Wars. I have heard this from others as well. Don't know what the difference is.
dawz, If you have been on other motion rides and handled it you should be okay on ST.
CHEERMOM 11-08-2007, 07:20 AM I can ride the Mountains Soarin, all just fine but Star Tours and Body Wars both make me SICK and I agree with Cathy, about the sports bra!

It's the jerkiness level in my opinion. Body Wars seems far less smooth (though StarT has plenty of jerk too when compared to, say, Soarin).
On that 1 to 10 scale... if 10 is a roller coaster with loops then I'd say StarTours is a 4. Just mo. For reference, the technology for Star Tours is the same as the simulators you see at Science Museums these days.
By the way there are lots of youtube videos of the ride in action.

sports bra on Dinosaur as well lolololol..I nearly popped right out and dd was red in the face of embarrasement
ElephantEars 11-08-2007, 11:01 AM I got sick to my stomach on Body Wars, but have been completely fine with Star Tours.
Start Tours feels like it's over in a second. So at least if you feel a little uncomfortable, you will not be stuck in there for very long.

Put Kilamanjaro Safari on that list too!
Mike J 11-08-2007, 09:49 PM At the conclusion of Star Tours my 75 year old mother commented, "That's It?".
You'll be fine.
danyoung 11-09-2007, 05:21 AM I just can't imagine what your 75 year old mother was wanting to see. I'll never forget the first time I did Star Tours, and the ship swooped down to enter the trench on the Death Star. Totally cool usage of film and motion, like nothing I'd ever experienced. Yeah, it's a little long in the tooth now, and I can't wait for the new version. But I've never been any less than thrilled with a ride on ST!
dawz1026 11-09-2007, 09:06 AM now I am excited to ride!!!!
dawz1026 11-09-2007, 09:07 AM Put Kilamanjaro Safari on that list too!
totally!!!!:D
The old man 11-09-2007, 10:25 AM For me it was a matter of age. I used to like these rides, but now, due to an ear problem, I get very dizzy. I believe it's fluid in the ear that has crystalized.

Woos = scardy cat
Your reply is interesting because while I don't like coasters which have your legs dangling below you or go backwards I can pretty much cope with and enjoy everything else so long as I hold my breath down the drops. Simulators have a very direct effect on my nausea levels and for hours after in a completely different way to roller coasters. They obviously hit a different part of my sick radar... Am very confused as to whether to try this or not now. If I shut my eyes on it will it just all go away?
danyoung 11-09-2007, 01:09 PM woos - ahhh, wuss! You say potatoe . . .
And as I understand it, the official recommendation from Disney is that if you're feeling sick on a simulator, just close your eyes. The motion by itself is much milder than it seems. It's only when it's combined with what you see that the brain if fooled into thinking that it's experiencing more than it really is.
