We have had ap's for the last 3 years and this year I missed my renewal date. We are moving and things got crazy and I forgot to renew online. The website will not let me renew online now and we are due to arrive in about a month. Would it be easier to purchase a ticket online and then upgrade once we get there? I am not sure I would have time to send in the renewal application by mail and get them in time for my trip. We are set to go Dec 4-8. Also, if I purchase them online, do they send you something in the mail or are you able to print out your confirmation once you arrive?

If you have a local disney store they sell AP's. they are just plastic cards that will get you in the park so that you can go to the AP center. The anniversary date starts from the first day you enter the park and get the actual passes. that is how we have done it in the past and it works out great.

The benefits of upgrading from a ParkHopper to an AP is the right to use Early Entry if it is a 3 day or longer ParkHopper, and the fact that during the first visit, you don't have to worry about Blockout dates.
But with your dates, unless you want to take advantage of Early Entry, you can just buy an AP online.
If you have an AAA card, checkout this special website
www.disneyland.com/ap (http://www.disneyland.com/ap)
You save $10 off a new AP purchase.
As for the Print at Home option, you print out a page (one per person) that has a barcode, you take that directly to the entrance turnstiles, where the CM will take the paper, scan it on its computer, and then print a traditional "credit-card" size piece of cardboard that is your AP voucher that you take to the Bank of Main Street.
Hope this helps.

Also, my Disney Store still has APs at the pre-price increase price. ie. Premium passes are $359 and Deluxes are $239. The expiration date is Jan 2. Might check your local store.

I think the AAA discount Darkbeer was talking about is actually
www.disneyland.com/westways (http://www.disneyland.com/westways)

Yes, I made a typo, the westways on the end is the correct option.
But, as Malcon10t mentioned, if you can find an "old" priced AP voucher at a Disney Store, that is a better deal.
