I've been driving in L.A. for over 17 years so I don't need general tips on L.A. traffic. I'm just deciding whether to take
the 57
or
side roads (like Holt, Valley and Harbor)
from
east of San Dimas (north of the 10) south to Disneyland
at about 3:30 or 4p.m. on a Monday or Tuesday.
In other words, is the 57 southbound almost as jammed as the 10 eastbound is (in L.A.) at 4p.m.? (or the 10 Westbound a.m., or the 405 when it isn't dark)
If the 57 is particularly awful I could always get off and take side roads, but I'm wondering if I should even take a chance get on the 57.

Are you driving solo? IMHO the carpool lanes on the 57 are the only way to go. If you 're coming from San Dimas the only usual problem area is the 60/57 interchange. And that's actually much improved since the construction was completed there.

Yes, there will be two of us so the carpool lane will be an option if I can get over to it.
Thanks for the tip, Rufus!

I don't take the 57 at that time usually, but I had a co-worked who takes side streets any time of day to avoid it. It seems like there is an accident or road construction on that freeway on the traffic report nearly every day.

Thanks, Dizneymommy! There is a street that runs along the 57 (like Sepulveda along the 405), but that could be jammed too since there are no other roads nearby going through those hills.
But I am now back on the fence since non-freeway roads are always more interesting to me.

At that time of day, the heaviest traffic is coming back northbound on the 57. Southbound traffic is heaviest during the morning commute. Surface streets all the way in will take you just as long or even longer.

I agree. I live in Alta Loma and the 57 is the best way to go, just have patience while getting through the 57/60 interchange...

If you are interested in a non-freeway route you might consider taking Fullerton Rd. south off of the 60. It takes you through the hills of Rowland Heights and La Habra Heights. When you come down out of the hills, the road becomes Harbor Bl. in the city of La Habra. It is a more scenic and more interesting drive than the 57. But, because of all the traffic lights on Harbor, chances are it will take you longer.

I also live in Rancho, not far from the 15. On most days I can take the 15S to the 60W (car pool lane) to the 57S (car pool lane) exit at Ball Rd and arrive at Disney parking structure in under an hour. The carpool lanes are the big time saver.

Thanks Rufus and Pastrylover!
I'll try the 57 south since the traffic should be lighter going south in the afternoon. I'll try to get over to the carpool lane, and I'll be patient at the 60 interchange.
I have the Fullerton Rd. route highlighted on my AAA maps and I'll give that a try on another trip.
And one time I might try getting on the 57 south of the 60 via Pathfinder Rd.
This evening trip is combining my love of maps with my greater love of taking my toddler to Disneyland. Thanks, again.
