1. THE CHALLENGE OF WHITE SHARKS
When you set out to do what's never been done before, where others
have failed, you're like a tightrope walker working without a net.
When your goal is to exhibit a white shark, you risk a fall on the
world's biggest stage.
After you succeed the first time you still wonder: Was it just a
fluke?
John O'Sullivan doesn't wonder anymore. Now that his team has placed
three young white sharks on exhibit since 2004, our curator of
husbandry operations is convinced that success flows from the process
and philosophy behind our white shark project.
"There were so many hurdles to overcome--including the perception that
no one could do it," John says. "We could never have done it without
a team approach and backing from Aquarium leadership."
Visitors benefit, he says, in the same way that their eyes were opened
in a new way when they saw our Kelp Forest exhibit for the first time.
"You can't put 1.8 million people in a kelp forest in the wild--the
environment can't handle it," John says. "But they can come here and
appreciate the beauty. The same thing is true for a white shark. It's
one of the best ambassadors for the open ocean."
Get the inside story about how John and his team succeeded during a
live webcast on Friday, Nov. 16. We'll send a reminder email with
details on how to participate.
