We will be going in the "slower" time in April. I thought, since the operating hours are shorter, that we would visit the parks with evening extra magic. The UGTWW says to avoid extra magic parks at all costs. Does this apply in the off-season?
Also, for example, if a park were to close at 8pm and extra magic is to 10pm, can you get FP for a popular ride around 7pm that would be good for 9pm. If you get what I'm saying.

Personally, I think the crowd level varies, but at the same time, we rarely do morning EMH's because we tend to stay out later. For us, evening EMH's have worked out ok if not pretty well. And at the same time, not too shabby / even better during slower times as well.
There has been a few discussions on the topic of "to do or to avoid" EMH's in the past. You may want to search on the topic to see past comments and conversations.
As for fastpasses.... well, during the slower times, I observed that FP lines were not running as often and/or the lines were short enough where using a FP is not necessary in the first place. During the busier times of the year, the FP machines for the more popular rides would be shut down because all the FP's were passed out for the day. So I have seen a mixed bag. I know that others have reported different things as well, so maybe some of them will chime in with their experience since this may be one of those "your mileage may vary" sort of things.
