First trip to WDW
Post Day 1
Let me start off by saying that we are Disneyland people. Since my son's first trip to Disneyland when he was 6, we have gone about 6 times to Disneyland (we live in Washington state), so not so unusual to have never been to WDW. DH and I celebrated our 21st Wedding Anniversary on August 23rd of this year and my father (in a move that is very out of character) offered to take the three of us to WDW - he would pay for our tickets, airfare and hotel - we would cover our food and any other items we wanted. What a deal!!
First a little background. My mom passed away very suddenly from a brain tumor about a year and a half ago. Mom and dad had always talked about taking Zac to WDW, so I'm thinking maybe this was behind Dad's offer. Also, needless to say, he doesn't like to stay around the house. Dad is 70 and has diabetes - he doesn't really take care of himself and walks slowly. We were concerned about his ability to make the trip and also about how much we would need to change our touring plans to fit his daily routine.
We got 7 day park hopper passes with water park and more and Dad just got a 3 day park hopper pass. As it turned out, he went his way and we went ours. He wanted to see Universal and we wanted to stay at WDW. So, we all got the most out of our trips and saw what we wanted.
Now, on with the show.
We had a 6:00 am flight out of Portland, Oregon (about an hour drive for us). Dad lives in Hillsboro, Oregon and is about the same distance from the airport. He suggested that we all go together to the airport, so we decided to spend the night at his place and head out from there at 4:00 am (ugh).
We started out from Longview around 6:30 or so, then realized we forgot the camera, so turned around. (only about 5 minutes out, so not too bad). I had a cold all week, so I was still really wiped out and when I get overly tired, I get a headache - so I wasn't feeling too well. We get to Dad's house around 8:20 and I realize that I didn't bring calcium pills with me, so my DH runs over to Target to pick some up. He is tired too from the long week and when he gets back, he pulls into the driveway to sharply and rips off a piece of dad's mailbox. This leaves a lovely white stripe on the side of the dark green minivan. So, of course he is very upset (DH, not dad). Is this an indication of how the trip will be?
Tune in next time for Day 1 - a lesson in sitting
petesimac 10-14-2007, 07:57 PM Yeah, west coast perspective!
MrsGrumpy 10-14-2007, 08:41 PM I hope the rest of your trip went smoothly!
My kids will be 13 and 11 our next trip, so it'll be great to read about your sons likes/dislikes.
Looking forward to reading more! :)
splash 10-16-2007, 04:29 PM Day 1
We got up at the lovely hour of 3:00 am (pacific time) because DH and I wanted to shower before spending all day riding on airplanes. We left about
3:45 and arrived at the airport around 4:20. Once we caught the shuttle from the economy parking lot to the terminal, it was about 4:30. There was, of course a huge line waiting to check in for our flight. My dad had the idea to go out to the curb and check out the porters. There was no line for them and it only took about 5 minutes to check our luggage. In the Portland airport, you check in luggage and then take it over to the x-ray line, where you wait longer for your bag to be scanned. Since we used the porter, he did this for us. In about 5 minutes, we were on our way to security. This line was also huge and my dad started freaking out and saying we were going to miss our plane. Keep in mind that it was still an hour and a half until the plane leaves.
Finally we got through the security scan and found out that our gate was the first one in the terminal. We had just enough time to hit the bathroom and then the plane was boarding. I was a little concerned as we didn't get anything to eat prior to boarding the plane and we were only supposed to get a snack (ie. peanuts). That worked out okay though, because the snack was cereal, a muffin and raisins. Score one for Continental!! Woo hoo!
The first leg of our flight was from Portland, Oregon to Houston, Texas (about a 4 hour flight). So we sat back and had our snack and watched Licensed to Wed. I slept the rest of the time.
We arrived in Houston around 11:00 and our flight to Orlando left at 12:15. We dragged off the plane (we were in row 23) and entered one of the busiest terminals I've ever seen. We found dad a seat and went in search of food. We ended up having Popeye's chicken (pretty tasty) about $22.00 for the 4 of us I believe.
The flight left on time and we got to Orlando about 4:45. We followed the directions and made our way down to DME. We checked in and were out the door on a bus in 10 minutes. It only took about 25 minutes to get to the hotel (we were the first stop). Got to love the video about WDW that they play on the way to the hotel.
Check in at the Pop Century went smoothly (except that they hadn't followed any of our requests and my dad said that I lost his hotel voucher (which he found in a different pocket of his carry on)). We wanted the 70's building, 4th floor. They had us in the 50's building on the first floor. After talking to the castmember, they were able to move us to the 4th floor of the 50's (bldg. 2). Which meant that we only had to walk out our doors and go to the end of the walkway to see the fireworks from Epcot. Just outside the doors we could see the fireworks from the Magic Kingdom and MGM.
Upon check in we had a towel animal dog in our window. The room was good size for 3 people. Me at 5' 5", Husband at 6' 2" and DS (13) who is almost 6' tall.
We decided to get some food and then hit the bowling pin pool.
The food court was an experience.... At the first part of your trip it's like "Wow, so many choices", but by the end you're just like "What can I have now?"
So, in conclusion today consisted of a lot of sitting (about 6 and a half hours on planes). Luckily not too much stress. We waited for our bags to arrive from magical express, and waited, and waited. I finally called and they said they had just been delivered to the hotel and would be to us soon. In the end, it was about 4 hours (or 10:00 pm) before we saw them. It's kind of scary not having control of your luggage, but I've got to say, it was a lot less of a hassle not worrying about collecting luggage and dragging it out to the bus.
Looking forward to going to the Magic Kingdom tomorrow (Sat. 10/6)
Tune in next time for West meets East at the Magic Kingdom!
anniedg 10-17-2007, 01:47 PM Thanks for posting -- really enjoying it so far!!
jmb910 10-17-2007, 03:12 PM Love the report so far!
My DH is from Hillsboro also, so you are right, it isn't uncommon not to make it over to Walt Disney World. He didn't go until he was 20.
Looking forward to more details!
Jennifer
jcreek 10-17-2007, 04:59 PM I'm from Hillsboro too, although I've lived in NYC the past 3 years. I definitely went to Disneyland when I was a kid far more than WDW.
I'm enjoying your report!
splash 10-17-2007, 07:30 PM Thanks so much for all the comments. How weird that some of you are from Hillsboro. It's a small world. We lived in Beaverton for about 6 years then moved north.
Ok, on with the show
Day 2 10/6 (which is really day 1 if you count the first day in the parks.)
We were pretty tired on account of the long day the first day, so we slept in a little, but still woke up around 7:30 am (this would be 4:30 to those of us on West coast time). After prying open my eyelids (without the use of artificial stimulants ie: coffee/caffeine; which we stopped drinking about 6 months ago - I still occasionally will have a root beer, but it just doesn't taste as good to me now) Okay, off the soap box, I'm not really a purist, just trying to make some lifestyle changes.
Walking outside was like being hit with a wet towel. (I never totally got used to that, although some days were much milder and not so much humidity) We made our way to the food court - which is a study in gluttony (or at least it could be with all the choices/desserts available). DH got oatmeal (he always has to be one better than me - JK) and I got a cheese omlete w/ breakfast potatos, my son got some mickey waffles. I don't remember the exact cost, but after drinks it was probably around $25 or so. A word of warning.... This place is a madhouse in the mornings - mind you, not impossible to navigate, just a little unsettling at first. (That is one of the things that you have to get used to - being constantly surrounded by the teaming masses) This is one thing that I didn't notice until we were home - how nice it is to go somewhere and not feel like there are people closing in on you from all sides.
We got out to the bus stop around 9:00 and had our first experience with the bus service - I believe we waited about 15 minutes the first time and we had to stand. (far better to stand in the morning than at night, believe me).
Oh, I should mention that our bus stop at MK was the farthest one from the entrance.
I think we arrived at the MK about 10 ish? Our first ride was going to be Peter Pan - (it is a favorite of ours at DL). We cruised through the security check (had to get my fanny pack searched) and went to an entry turnstile where we expertly inserted our key to the world cards (I loved these and wish the whole world functioned like that - except it can be real easy to spend money with these [yes, even easier than a credit card]).
We entered the park and marveled at the entrance to main street, and how different the Emporium looked here with it's columns (as opposed to it's California counter part). We found our first glimpse of the castle to be really incredible, it is much more imposing and impressive than the one at DL. (throughout this report I will give some comparisons to DL vs. WDW)
As we figured out how to get to Fantasyland (around the castle) we started to plot out our day. Peter Pan first (20 minute wait), then IASW (boy is this one different from DL - no big facade outside the ride, or separate building. Although I miss the structure of DL IASW, I actually liked the WDW version better- but I missed the mermaids. I kept bugging my DH to go get splash mountain fast passes "Because it is hot, and they will be all gone..." and him saying "I want to do the Haunted mansion" (which, of course we all did, because we love this ride) We headed over to that area and got the passes for SM (we also paused for a brief moment of silence in tribute to BTMRR being closed for refurb). Surprisingly, it was still a pretty early return time for it - go figure. Then we went over to HM. I was grateful for the awning to keep out the sun, but let me tell you, the air does not move in there, it is dead (no pun intended). Luckily we didn't wait long to get on this (maybe 10 minutes), and I've got to say that we loved the WDW version more than DL. Especially the haunted library (my husband is a Librarian), and the glowing footprints on the stairs.
I'm so excited, because it is time to use our fastpasses on SM. This ride far surpassed the one at DL. I like the double seating logs, and the ride seems smoother. Also the theming inside was much more detailed. I always love that drop. We got pretty wet on this from another log that was going down the big drop while we were circling (I think they time it this way).
We had an ADR for Liberty Tree Tavern at lunch (for the first day and still adjusting to the heat, some of the food sounded way too heavy) However, my DS ordered the Turkey, stuffing, mashed potato meal anyway (he is a Turkey junky), I ordered a salad that had, get this, Washington apples (that's right, we travel 3,000 miles to eat apples we could get at home), it also had chicken and bacon, etc. It was too warm to eat a bigger meal. DH had a sandwich (can't remember which kind). I should also mention that the boys fought me on almost every ADR I had made - I kept hearing "how do I know what I will be in the mood for 6 months from now", and "I don't want to be locked into eating at a certain place, if I don't want to". But, I am happy to report, that we used all of our ADR's (another side note - I think we only made something like 4 ADR's total).
After lunch we ventured into Adventureland and Pirates, which was in my estimation a really big disappointment (for those of you who have been on the one in Disneyland and the one in WDW, you know what I'm talking about)
Pirates is our most favorite ride at DL and we ride it something like, oh I don't know, maybe 13 times during a 5 day trip. DL's version is much longer and because of space at the parks, it goes far underground, which means you have two drops before you reach the piratey (is that a word?) part of the ride. In case you haven't noticed, I have a real thing for water flume rides. The drops at pirates are not SM sized drops, but they give you a thrill nonetheless.
We also experienced the Tiki Room (while enjoying Dole Whip), this version is very different, but I think I may have liked the changes. The jury is out on this one as DH thought it was just too weird this way and DS being somewhat noncommital.
Time to fly to Tomorrowland. The boys wanted me to ride space mountain with them (as I had not done this in DL - due to a head cold), so we went to get fastpasses for it. It was about 2:30 by this time and the return time was 5:30 for fastpasses or a 65 minute wait (not going to happen). We decided to try out the TTA (We really liked this one - very relaxing, and for those of us from the Northwest, feeling the air move was priceless.
While in Tomorrowland, we did Monsters Laugh Floor (loved it); Stitches great escape (not really moved, and I can never look at a chili dog the same way again - those of you who have done this know what I'm talking about - am I right?); and of course space mountain (I've got to tell you, my knees were knocking on this one) I requested the front car, so I could have some idea which way we were going (bag that, for most of the ride, you can't even tell which way you are going - can you say whiplash? I felt like a got jerked around quite a bit here, but I did it!!) No one could see my legs shaking after I got off, I am queen!!
We had been looking forward to trying out the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station so we headed there for dinner, and guess what? The sign said closed - we stood there with our heads cocked sideways and tried to puzzle this out? How could it be? We cornered a castmember who was sweeping and she told us that it is only open during the busy season - excuse me? I know this is supposed to be a less crowded time of year, but I still can't move without bumping into people and people with strollers- they should wear signs, don't get me started. Okay, deep breath, and we are moving on.
I know we were worn out that first day, so we didn't stay for fireworks and instead headed back to the hotel and went for a swim. We were (correction, I was asleep around 9:00, and the boys were out by 10:00).
Overall views - The MK was alot different from DLR. (We're not in Kansas anymore) Our feeling was that we prefer DLR to MK on the majority with a few exceptions, those being Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, TTA, IASW (the ride, not the housing for it). And finally - It is hot here!! Weird being sticky and wet all day.
Coming up - Can we face the heat, or will the humidity win?
Also our first character breakfast - Mary Poppins at 1900 Park Faire at the Grand Floridian and the challenge to make the 8:30 reservation time
Tune in for our next exciting installment.....
padilla6710 10-17-2007, 07:47 PM I agree with you about Pirates at MK I dont like it at all compared to DL. DL is the orignal and you can really feel this when riding. However the MK has Cinderella's castle which is amazing and beautiful. I feel our castle at DL cant compare to MK! I love TTA so much, this used to be called the people movers at DL and it was my favorite ride as a child. The other thing that is hard to get used to is how spread out MK is compared to DL so much more walking! I am loving your trip report. I have just 31 more days until my family and I are off to DW from Orange County Calif! Cant wait to read more :)
fantasiapirate 10-17-2007, 08:31 PM I'm enjoying your trip report. I grew up going to Disneyland and took my sister to WDW for the first time spring of 2006 (my third WDW trip). I love both MK and Disneyland and it's fun to see your comparisons (very similar to mine!) Looking forward to the rest of your report.
Thanks for sharing!!
splash 10-18-2007, 07:46 PM Day 3
I mentioned before that we had an 8:30 am reservation at 1900 Park Faire at the Grand Floridian. So, since I am big on planning stuff out, I called the front desk to ask how would be the best way to get there and how long to allow. They told me to take a bus to MK and then get on the monorail to the Grand Floridian and to allow about an hour. Excuse me? An hour? Ok.....
The next morning we got up around 6:45-7:00 and got ready then headed out to the bus stop. We lined up about 7:45 (we're still okay right?). We waited about 20 minutes for the bus (of course this was one of the times when it took the longest to get there). We arrived at the MK about 8:15-8:20 and headed to the monorail (no biggie right, the Grand Floridian is right next to MK) - the monorail only went the other way, via the contemporary resort, TTC, Polynesian resort and then Grand Floridian. By this time we are resigned to the fact that we will be late, but still a bit worried about what will happen when we finally arrive. It arrives and we bound out the doors and head into the hotel (of course we have no idea where the restaurant is). We find a directory and see that we need to go downstairs. Enter at 8:45 planning to blame it on the transportation, when they take us back to be seated without blinking an eye. Whoa....
We are seated at a fairly large table (probably for 8 people, and we are only 3), but it is nice to have room to spread out. My son heads immediately to the buffet, and so Alice In Wonderland passes our table by (because we are childless, I guess). DH and I decide to get food too. First challenge, don't take so much food that you explode. I did pretty well this time. I had some fruit, bagel, potatos, and a really yummy sticky bun. A few other odds and ends (lobster eggs benedict) etc and I'm on my way.
We were visited by pooh, tigger, mary poppins, alice (she came back) and we saw the mad hatter. It was cool, mostly done for my DH who loves Mary Poppins (the movie, not the lady at the buffet).
We had originally planned to go to Epcot, but I was a little worried about getting there late - so figure out our logic....(we had dinner ressies at Nine Dragons for 5:30) DH suggests we go to Downtown Disney. It is crazy enough to work and we decide to hop on the monorail and get off at the TTC to catch a bus to Downtown Disney.
We arrive at the TTC and find out that you can't get a bus there to Downtown Disney. So we can walk over to the Polynesian resort (about 5 minutes in the heat, ugh), but that is what we decided to do. I like their bus stop - it is open air with ceiling fans going (it reminds me of Hawaii) I guess that is the idea huh? We had to wait, I think about a half an hour for the bus, while buses to every other destination went through.
Downtown Disney was really big and pretty cool. They even have fountains that you can go in to cool down. We entered Goofy's candy company first, but were afraid to buy anything for fear it would melt. We headed over to the Toy company (it is really nice) where DH found a stuffed Maleficent that he could add to his dragon collection. We also visited the pin trader store and picked up a few for our collections. I got a bat with glow in the dark eyes, and one that opens up and looks like an old ticket book. (I remember going to DL when I was a little girl and they had ticket books). DH found a mushu one to add to his dragon pins, and DS found some goofy ones to add to his collection. We also visited the world of disney store and found some shirts. I was looking for tank tops - but they were all the teeny bopper styles (where even if I got an extra large, it would barely go over my head), so that didn't work out. Finally about 2:00, we decided to go back to the hotel and drop off our stuff and go to Epcot.
The bus went to Typhoon Lagoon, which looked cool, and then went to the Pop Century. We were on our way to Epcot around 2:45.
I'm not sure why we thought it would be a good idea to go so late? We checked the boards and it said that soaring and test track (really want to try this one) have no fastpasses available and wait times are 60-95 minutes. Don't want to do them that bad. Somehow we decided to head to world showcase and wander there until our 5:30 reservations. So that's what we did. DS kept finding things that he wanted to buy and I kept saying "let's look first and then decide".
When we got over there we worked our way to Norway (Skaugset - see the connection?) and decided to get a fastpass for Maelstrom. We also saw some really cool Japenese drummers and Miyuki (the candy lady). Her show was packed. The store is right next to it, so we got ourselves lost in it for awhile. Bought some really cool rice bowl and chopstick sets (4 for $18), some rice candy and some rice crackers (these were my DS idea- but we all agreed they tasted really gross - so we threw those away.) While we were in the store, it started to rain torrentially (sp?). Luckily, by the time we were through it had stopped.
We did sample some things from the food and wine boothes - like buffalo and some spicy veggie soup. Most of the items didn't really appeal to us though. It was fun to check out all the menus.
I've heard some people say that Nine Dragons is just okay, but I really liked it. I got the Honey sesame chicken and it was wonderful. (We had originally had an ADR for Teppanyaki, but as you know it was still closed, so as a bonus they gave us VIP seating for Illuminations [more on that later]) We got our voucher for VIP seating when we arrived here.
After dinner, we went to the Chinese pavilion and saw these amazing acrobats. These girls were holding their bodies up with just one arm. You must see them if you go. When we walked outside they had the photopass people taking pictures in front of this temple like building - so we had a photo taken (still deciding whether to spring the $12.95 for it)
It was time for our fastpasses to Maelstrom, so we headed over to Norway. I really liked the ride (except the backing up part because I am kind of weird about that), but I like when it looks like you are going over the waterfall at the entrance.
Another highlight was the Mexican building. When you get inside, it looks like you are outdoors in a Mexican market - how cool is that themeing? We liked the boat ride too. Very relaxing - in fact, I thought this country was one of the most calming and peaceful.
Eventually we made our way over to the entrance to the world showcase to find the VIP seating area. We were told by some castmembers where the spot was, but that there weren't actually chairs there. Great, my feet are killing me and DH's back is bothering him and we were looking forward to sitting on chairs. They told us that they would let us enter the area around 8:15. We walked into a cement pad where others were sitting. So we got close to the front and waited. Then they came out and told us that they were going to let us go right up by the railing and the water and that we would have to sit, not stand (fine by me) We got waterside seats and waited. This show is really moving. It was done very well and we could really feel that fire. It was a great experience and I was glad that we didn't have to camp out for 45 minutes ahead like some others had done.
We joined the masses to exit the park after the show. Where we trudged to the farthest bus stop #12 I think. Luckily we got on the second bus and got seats. We only had to stand on busses twice the whole time we were at the World.
So, it's back to the room and time to crash.
Overall perspective for the day....
Epcot was alot more crowded than I expected (especially in terms of fastpasses). It is a lot more open at the world showcase and I really liked the different countries represented there.
Downtown Disney is not to be missed as there is a great variety here and many items that I didn't see in the parks. Busses can be a drag when you have to wait forever - I see why some people rent a car. I think it is just a matter of allowing yourself extra time to get places and knowing that it is a little more complex than DL where you can walk out of the park and to your hotel in a matter of minutes. Things are way more spread out here and it takes a while to get your bearings. Even looking at maps I don't have a very good grasp of where all the parks are. (this is probably because the bus drivers never take the same route to get anywhere - confusing, do they do it on purpose? I wonder......
Tomorrow is da da da.... Blizzard Beach and MNSSHP. Don't miss the thrills, chills (get it blizzard beach), and the spills....
eyenjeff 10-18-2007, 11:19 PM Great report!!! I am enjoying it soo much! Sounds like you had a great time when you were there. Can't wait to read the rest.
witneys7 10-20-2007, 09:22 AM I too hail from Oregon (Albany) and am planning a bigger sized party to WDW in Jan 09 (10 people), so I am really enjoying your report. Looking back, and if you had five younger children with you :), would you rent a car for the week to bypass all of the waiting for buses and such? It sounds like there is a lot of time wasted waiting, an hour here an hour there. I know it comes with the territory but I want my time spent seeing the most I can, so to rent a car or not rent a car? That is the question:)
Thanks for posting, I really am enjoying reading it! Write faster, JK:D
splash 10-21-2007, 09:18 AM I guess that you could consider renting a car (in your case, a large one). If you do stay on site, they give you a parking pass, so you don't have to pay parking at the different parks. You would have to deal with finding your way around though. Most places have good signage, but, I noticed that none of the bus drivers went the same way to a park. I guess they know shortcuts, etc.
I don't feel like we wasted a bunch of time waiting on busses. As I stated, we really only waited like 10 minutes (except a couple of times).
It may also depend on what time of year you go. If you go during a lower season, the crowding may not be as bad. If you go in high season, then maybe a car is the way to go. Also, if you plan to visit Cape Kennedy or any other area attractions, this would be good.
splash 10-21-2007, 10:07 AM Day 4
The water parks don't open until 10:00, so we finally had a day where we could sleep in a bit. I was still up by 8:00 though, maybe it's all the excitement, etc.. Dragged DS out of bed around 9ish - he has been wiped out.
Stepped outside to check the view and temp and was hit by heat, but not as much humidity.
I think we left the room around 9:20 to go eat some breakfast at the food court. I think I had a cinnamon roll and a yogurt parfait (vanilla yogurt, strawberries and granola - yum), DS had discovered the Pop waffles and DH had a cinnamon roll and fruit (total was around $28 or so), this is about typical of our breakfasts.
We headed out to catch the bus to Blizzard Beach/Animal Kingdom about 10:00. This was one of the days where we had to wait, and wait. Meanwhile, we watched numerous busses come in for MK, MGM, DTD and Typhoon Lagoon. Probably about (20-25 minutes later, the bus arrived). We counted ourselves lucky to have a seat and not have to stand.
The driver turned into MGM, say what? Okay, maybe it is close by....After making a circle around the lot, he comes on the speaker and says "Sorry folks, wrong park" - and we were off. It didn't take long to get to Blizzard Beach from there though.
When we arrived, I expected big crowds, but they weren't there - so cool! Next stop, the store to rent a locker and towels (we could have brought towels from the hotel, but figured for only a dollar, might as well get them here). After slathering no the sunscreen (spf 50), we headed out.
After staking out lounge chairs, we decided to ease into the park and use the lazy river - that is about a 20 minute round trip ride. Afterwards, I wanted to try out the family raft ride. We had to catch the chair lift up the hill (there are stairs, but this was way more fun), so we waited a bit for a chair (they fit 3 people, so no one had to ride alone). We rode to the top and listened to the loud whooshing noise made by those going down the speed slide that looks like a ski jump - they go about 50 mph on this - freaky. When we got off the chair lift, we just went to the right and the entrance to the Teamboat Springs ride was right there. This ride utilizes a conveyor belt that brings the big 6-8 person raft right up to the start. All you have to do is get in (no carrying it up many flights of stairs). We had to stand off to the right until the found another group to go with us - a group of 3 or 4. We all got in and grabbed on the straps and away we go. You get on this ride thinking that you won't get very wet, because nothing sloshes over the side, however, under the sides of the raft, there are holes which let in the water. By the time you reach the bottom, it is like sitting in a wading pool - very sneaky. I really enjoyed this ride as it is pretty long and not really rough, just the side to side motion and going up the side a bit on corners. We got the stream at the bottom, and there was a photopass person (waist deep in water) taking pictures. They never miss a chance. To be fair though, there is no pressure to buy anything, they just toss a waterproof photopass on a wristband to you and you are on your way.
We also checked out the Toboggan slide - it looks like a giant slide (loved this) DS and I are water park junkies, DH not so much, but he goes along for the ride. DH decided to go lay in the son, while DS and I went on some other slides. I thought about doing the speed slides, but never really got up enough guts to do it (I had read about someone who said they got bruised and banged up on this one, so I didn't try it). We did almost all the other slides here though and loved it!!
Finally about 4:00 we convinced DS that we should leave since we had tickets to MNSSHP that night at 7:00. We went to turn in our locker key and got back a $5 deposit. After leaving the park, we went to our bus stop (a bit closer at this park) and waited about 5 minutes for the bus to our hotel.
Hurray, here's Pop. Off to the room to freshen up and head to MK to get some dinner before the party. We also decide on the spur of the moment, to go to Kennedy space center tomorrow (Tues) and since my father hadn't rented a car and had told us he would be going to the movies tomorrow, we arranged a rental car for the day. The ticket and transportation center has a rental agency (they would come and pick us up in the free shuttle and take us to the lot at 9:30 the next morning) I felt a little guilty not telling dad, but he was at another park and we knew we would be getting in late and getting up early. So we didn't tell him. (am I a bad daughter?) We also knew that he would have trouble with all the walking.
Arrived at MK about 5:30 (I'm thinking) and went in search of food. On the way, we ran into wristband distribution stations, and got our wristbands for the party.(those without wristbands, must leave the park at 7:00 - with a wristband, you can stay until midnight) Couldn't find much that appealed, so we went to Cosmic Rays (this place is wild and was loud, but a good time) We ended up having burgers and DS had a hot dog. I like their condiment (fixins) bar. By the time we finished, people were leaving the park in droves (good, the less people here, the smaller the lines for rides).
I wanted to ride Splash Mountain of course, DH wanted HM and DS was up for anything. We checked the line for Peter Pan, and it was long so we bypassed. We rode Aladdins magic carpets, then Splash Mountain (3 times in a row, there was no line, you just got off, walked back through the queing and hopped back on.) I would have ridden more, but DS and DH were through with it (oh well). We headed over to haunted mansion which was even creepier queing up for it at night with the lights and scary people. The footsteps on the stairs weren't working, so that was a drag, otherwise it was really cool.
We visited a couple of trick or treat stations, one went by the Mark Twain (it was docked) and there was a really creepy looking caretaker standing on it holding a lantern and just staring at you. (chills) The other one was out in the open near the flying carpets.
I thought we might have an easier time of getting on the Indy Speedway so we went there. There was still a line (not as long) and we waited probably about 10 minutes for this one. It was fun (it's a toss up between this one and the autopia at DL) do them both and you decide.
There was a trick or treat path running behind the speedway - coming from toon town, so we went there next. Castmembers were dressed like cards (Alice in Wonderland), there were about 6 candy stops here. so we got a nice assortment of candy from the 3 of us.
TTA was open and we thought it would be relaxing to ride it. This was a favorite ride for us (reminiscent of the People Movers, but different and better IMHO)
I wanted to see the Halloween parade, so we headed to Liberty square and it was packed. We finally squeezed in a small spot to watch. The parade was cool - especially the headless horseman and the grave diggers making sparks with their shovels.
Afterwards we went over and rode Winnie the Pooh (like DL better).
We were heading out when the 2nd Halloween parade was going down Main Street and I decided that I needed to look at the Halloween Party shirt just one more time. So we had to wait for it to pass by (mass exodus in the park), just for me to say, "no, I don't really like it that much". Sorry boys.
It's off to the farthest bus stop (#18) to catch a bus to our WDW home.
We got back around 11:30 or so and turned on the TV briefly to unwind. I was out in something like 15 minutes.
Overview- MNSSHP was fun and a good opportunity to ride rides without all the lines, but I don't know if I'd do it again. Blizzard Beach is a must do if you like water parks (we had added the water park and more onto our tickets) so we didn't have to pay out of pocket to go there. I really enjoyed all the variety and the theming there.
Tomorrow is....
The Kennedy Space Center and our adventures with tolls (can you actually go off site from WDW?) tune in tomorrow to find out...
witneys7 10-21-2007, 06:14 PM Great day of reporting splash! I was happy to read about the water park. padilla6710 10-29-2007, 11:56 AM waiting to hear more!! CANT WAIT!
splash 10-29-2007, 04:21 PM Hi everybody! Sorry it has taken me so long to post but work and life have been crazy. So, without further ado, I give you Day 5
As mentioned before, we had arranged the night before to rent a car from the onsite rental agent and were to be picked up at 9:30. We got outside a little early and the shuttle was waiting for us (we were the only ones on it). We took the short ride to the rental agent (right by the gates to the MK entrance to parking lot) and got our car (white Impala cost $66.00 - if you rent from the airport, it would only be $48) in about 10 minutes. We also picked up a map since we had no idea where we were going.
It was very simple to get off property and on to the highway. (this is something that I don't think the Disney people want you to know - when you are on Disney property, you don't feel like the real world even exists - but in a good way). It took about 45 minutes to reach the Kennedy Space Center (there were 3 tolls for a total of $3.75 all together: .75, .75 and $1.25 I think.)
We arrived at the Space Center around 10:30 and headed in from the parking lot (if you get there very late, you've got quite a walk ahead of you). We made it to the ticket boothes and perused the menu of tours, etc. With basic admission, you get a tour (it can last as long as 3 hours depending on how long you stay at each individual stop). There are also more involved tours and lunch with an astronaut. The more involved tour was sold out when we arrived and we decided to opt for lunch with an astronaut (on this day, it was Jon McBride). They told us that seating for this would begin around 11:30 (lunch was scheduled from 12-1). We entered the main building and had to go through security (like an airport) and had my purse checked.
After you go through security, you are in a building with a few displays and you exit this to the outside courtyard where there are other buildings with displays, movies and a rocket garden. I almost forgot.....Also, a gift shop. We decided to head into the gift shop first (don't know why?) We acquired shirts and mugs here and my DS got some space ice cream (freeze dried).
Next, it was on to the rocket garden where they have actual rockets from launches. This was really cool. Some of the rockets you could walk through, or sit in. So, this is where we spent our time until the lunch. (it was right next to the building where the lunch was scheduled to be). Weather today was very warm and not much shade here.
We lined up for lunch with an astronaut and were seated very quickly. They have tables for 10 people (only half were full - it looked like the room normally had about 15 of these tables.) The food was set out buffet style. We had our choice of drinks, salad, vegetables, mac and cheese and mini corndogs (for the little ones), grilled chicken breasts, rolls and for dessert, a choice of chocolate swirl cheesecake, orange cake, red velvet cake and carrot cake. I had the chocolate swirl cheesecake and hubby got the carrot cake (very tasty) DS had the orange cake and was not really thrilled. The food was very good though as was the talk that followed.
Jon McBride told us about his experiences and answered questions. It was very informative and I was glad that we did this. Afterwards there were pictures with him if you wanted (guess who forgot their camera? that's right we did).
So now it around 1:00 and we decided that we should do the tour or we won't have time. So happy that this is an air conditioned bus. Our first stop was a launch pad where we got to see the shuttle that just went to the space station. That was pretty powerful. You could stay as long as you wanted at the stops and then catch a bus when you were ready to move to the next one.
After a bit we went down to catch the bus to another building that had an actual replica of a rocket (full size) and the control center. We had to rush through this, because they told us that the last bus would leave at 4:00 and you would miss the last stop.
Our next stop was the building where they were checking out the modules that were going to the space station. We actually saw the modules that they took with them - this was such an amazing experience. It made it all seem so much more real to me.
Then it was back on the bus to go to the visitor center again.
We got back here and decided to go check out the model of the shuttle they have. You have to walk up this winding ramp to see the cargo bay and also the main compartment where the astronauts would be. This is pretty amazing stuff. I am so glad we did this.
We didn't get enough time to check out the movies, or the shuttle launch experience here. You really have to arrive when they open.
The heat had done a number on us though and we were wiped out. So we headed out around 4:00. We were talking about going over to Cocoa beach (sp?) to see the Atlantic ocean, but were just wanting to return to the hotel.
Back on the highway again and through the 3 tolls and back to the magic of Disney.
We just drove straight to the car rental place and caught a shuttle to the hotel.
Now we are just hot, tired and ready to relax. So we hit the food court for some dinner to take to the room and went back to relax.
Not sure if I mentioned this or not, but the twinkie tiramisu is to die for. (yes, I did have dinner too).
After cooling down for a bit, we went to the pool and relaxed some.
I think we crashed around 9:00 or so. It seems to be par for the course.
So-- tomorrow is Animal Kingdom. I am afraid because I have pledged to do Everest. But, I shall prevail.
Tune in and hear about the wilds we conquered and the things we saw which shall never be spoken of again (ha-ha)
eyenjeff 10-30-2007, 06:36 AM Another great post!! Sounds so interesting to see all that stuff. Can't wait for the next installment. We leave in exactly one week, I would love to read about the rest of your trip!!:D
raindodgerdorf 10-30-2007, 12:20 PM Report is great. We go every year & stay as "snow" (really rain) birds.:)
We live in La Center, Washington. A long trip but worth it!!!!! Thanks for writing.
anniedg 10-31-2007, 12:10 PM Really enjoying the report! We stayed at POP our last trip too and after reading this I'm dreaming of Twinkie Tiramisu :p Lunch with the astronaut sounds very cool -- neat that you got Kennedy SC in.
splash 10-31-2007, 03:59 PM On to day 6 (Wednesday) I apologize for misleading you, but we actually went to MGM today, not Animal Kingdom, so if you please.....MGM and the tower of terror........(most fitting for Halloween)
Today began much as many of our other days. We awoke around 8:00 and got ready, usually exiting the room around 9:00 to head to the food court for breakfast. I've gotten used to the variety and the crowds... I believe today was oatmeal and a yogurt granola parfait for me - oatmeal and fruit for hubby and DS is on the Pop waffle kick!
With breakfast out of the way, it was time to head through the gift shop and out to the busses. I spotted a cute Halloween shirt here earlier in our trip but wanted to wait to see what the MNSSHP shirt looked like. Long story short, didn't like the MNSSHP shirt (black shirt- not always my favorite) and I haven't been able to find the other one in my size, so I keep checking back. No luck! (I never did find it)
We walked out and the bus had just arrived with not much of a line, so we got on and we are sitting. Woo-hoo! From here it is a short ride to MGM (like 10 minutes tops).
I was happy to see that we are not the farthest stop from the park here. Through the usual security checks for me (fanny pack), but not DS or DH. (lucky!) I really like the feel of this park, although I did find it harder to get places here (I have a tendency to be map illiterate) but DS and DH are not cursed with my affliction.
We knew that we wanted to ride tower of terror, so we headed there to get a fastpass and then went out into the park to explore. We found ourselves at the Great Movie Ride. If you plan on sitting as soon as you enter, forget it, the cue is serpentine (aren't they all) and you stand in it. They do however show you film clips so that passes the time. The ride itself is outstanding!! Two thumbs way up!! I won't spoil the surprise for those who haven't been on it, but you ride in these big cars through movie scenes.
Now it was time for Tower of Terror or Hollywood Hotel, or whatever the parks choose to call it. I was a little nervous because we had been on this one at California Adventure and I remembered feeling a little like throwing up and being very shaky afterwards. So we headed into the library to hear (ne,ne,ne,ne(insert twilight zone soundtrack here) and then through the basement to the Na,na na - service elevator. I've got to say the Florida version beats the California version hands down. Not only do you do the really cool drops (yes, I really said "really cool") it also drives forward into the hotel and shows these really funky pictures of stars and people, etc...I would have ridden this again if we had had time.
We saw that it was close to time for the Indiana Jones stunt show and grabbed fast pass tickets to it. We found out that they are several hundred other people who also had fastpasses for the same time. We didn't come back until about 15 minutes before and we sat on the far left near the bottom. Keep in mind, if you think this will be a cool place to relax in, even though it is shaded, it is still open to the outside (alas, no air conditioning). This show was well worth the price of admission. It is so cool to see how they film the action scenes. Pretty amazing.
The boys wanted to do Star Tours because they are ultra Star Wars fans (I like it too(Star Wars the movies), the ride was ok, but not a favorite at DL) I decided if I kept my eyes closed during the light speed part with the stars streaking past you, I'd be okay (and I was). Next up was fastpasses for Star Tours. We also paused to take pictures of the Att att, the Ewok village, and the classic with the boys on a speeder cycle (exact name escapes me for some reason).
We decided to grab some lunch and headed to check out the Sci-Fi diner. I think if you make ADR's to one place, this should be the one. The place was crazy busy and she said that maybe she could seat us in an hour at a round table, not a car. We decided we didn't want to wait and went to check out other restaurants. Finally decided on Mama Melrose's since we were hungry and they could take us immediately. The atmosphere in this place is great. It looks like a trattoria with vines, and trellis and white lights- the regular lights dimmed and you feel like you are in another world. We ordered the flatbread (tomato and cheese for me and cheese for the boys), and proceeded to wait. Meanwhile, others who are seated after us and order after us are getting their food (flatbreads, etc..)Our waitress came back from a break and looked at our table and saw no food so she went to ask the kitchen. I hear them saying something about rushing it out and so I think she will come to tell us what is going on. She doesn't come over and actually avoids contact with us. Hubby and I don't like to be ignored and because we are "nice" people it seems to happen quite often. Finally the food arrives, delivered by someone other than our waitress. She comes out later and still avoids us. She finally comes over to ask if we need anything and I said "So Molly, what happened to our food? Why did it take so long?" She stumbles over her answer and finally comes up with "The part of the kitchen that makes the flatbreads was backed up" (we know this isn't true as others who ordered the same thing after ours got theirs before we did) She finally says "do you want dessert, it's on me" (Now we aren't looking for anything, just some acknowledgement that someone screwed up/lost our order, so the fact that she wouldn't even own up to it sort of upset us) I wanted to talk to the Manager, but DH said that we should write a letter to Disney complaining (since being home we've mellowed a bit, but writing this sort of brings it back - don't know whether to write the letter or not) Anyway, even though we weren't hungry, we ordered dessert - I got cheesecake (it was really good), DS got the truffle cake and DH ordered the creme limone. They were good, but still.....
Time for Star Tours...It was fun but not great.
We also wanted to make sure and get in on the Lights, Motors Action show so we had to be there by 3:15 for the 4:00 show. We headed this direction and found the singing in the rain umbrella and took a photo there. It is really cool, there is this black square on the ground underneath it and if you step on it, it begins to rain on the umbrella. Felt really good on this day, high humidity and temp near 90.
We made our way over to the backlot tour and took that. It doesn't show you a lot, but catastrophe canyon had really good effects.
We also went into the animation academy and the castmember outside the class to draw a character was hilarious. We were rolling on the floor by the time we went in to draw a character which was (in this class- Mickey Mouse)
It was time for the Lights, Motors Action car show. This is a must see! The special effects here are truly amazing. We were riveted throughout the 40 min. (I think) show.
In between times, we visited shops (my passion) and just soaked it all in. We were originally going to try to see Fantasmic (we've seen it at Disneyland). It started at 9:00 I think, and by 8 ish, we were done in. So we called it a day and retired to the hotel, air conditioning and the pool.
The next day will be Animal Kingdom (Look out! Rowr!!)
