View Full Version : shopping trip outside the world - where to go and how to get there?
emmah 10-13-2007, 09:25 PM Hi all, I am planning my first trip to WDW late January - first week of February. Whenever we go to DLR I always take a day off and head to the Southcoast Plaza for a shopping binge. I *love* the SC Plaza, lots of glitzy shops and so on. There is a shuttle bus that picks up from the resort hotels and delivers you there and back so its very convenient. I want to do the same thing in Orlando, and am hoping from some advice from you about which Mall to go to, and how to get there without a car (driving on the wrong side of the road is a holiday experience we happily forgo whereever possible). We are staying at the WL. So, where is the best place for a shopping-loving Kiwi to spend a day, and the best way to get there (if by taxi, approximate fares?). many thanks! emma
bellefan 10-15-2007, 08:21 AM It depends on what you're after. For great discounts and top designers the Premium Outlets are always a good find and fairly close to WDW. They have Coach, Fendi, Nike, and even a Disney outlet!
For high end mall shopping, try the Millenium Mall in Orlando - they have a Bloomigdale's,Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, etc. I don't know what the taxi fares are to either place since we typically rent a car. You may want to rent a car for 1 day to visit both places - it might be cheaper than the taxis. And they are both easy to find and easy to get to.
ENJOY!
emmah 10-15-2007, 07:32 PM hi and thanks - i will have a look at the website for the millenium mall which sounds great. i've never been to the outlet places before - I only ever have a few hours or sometimes a day, to myself to shop, so I always head for a mall where I can find everything in one place. as for driving ... you could not pay me enough to get me to drive - its all I can do not to get run over crossing the street in nth america even after having lived in canada for a couple of years. its just totally instinctive to look right left right and the number of times i have almost stepped out under a car coming in the 'wrong' direction is pretty horrifying! hopefully the conceige at the hotel will be able to tell me the best way to get there. thanks again
Hi Emmah,
I am in Orlando about one week every month on business, so I do a lot of shopping at night when I’m not out dining with customers. The outlet malls are really pretty good (Premium Outlet, Prime 1 Outlet), but for serious shopping I either go to the Mall at Millenia or the Florida Mall. The Mall at Millenia is more upscale, but smaller. It has stores such as Tiffany, Cartier, Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Jimmy Choo, Bloomingdales, Nieman Marcus, Macy’s, real neat high-end specialty shops, and has some very good dining choices for a mall. The Florida Mall is a very large mall, but not as upscale, and has stores such as Saks 5th Avenue, Burdines/Macy’s, Nordstroms, Dillards. I would recommend checking out their sites on the internet to get a feel for the types of shops that are in each mall and outlet. I have also found that Downtown Winter Park is great for shopping as well, but very “boutiqueish” -- is that even a word??? I get a lot of one-of-a-kind different types of clothing and accessories there, but it’s extremely pricy.
emmah 10-16-2007, 07:38 PM wow, they both look great. i have a few days in NYC on my own before the WDW part of the trip begins, so I plan to get most of my shopping fix out of the way before meeting up.... i might have to toss a coin to decide which to head to. i thought that ten days was going to be heaps of time to visit the world, universal and for me to have a day shopping and the boy to visit NASA but i am starting to get the feeling that its not nearly long enough....

Thanks for this one emmah, we will all surely benefit from your likes when you visit Disney as this will also help a lot when it comes to going out and taking a short stroll in the vicinity. Thanks again for sharing your experience and likes here with us....

I'm sooo glad I noticed this post because I have been dwelling on just the same quesion. As on our next trip we should not need to go quite so 'commando' style around the parks DH has said if I want some shopping he will take sole care of the offspring for the day. RESULT! However - we will not have a car as my memory of driving in the US a decade ago still makes me remember too many near death experiences to want to repeat it. (I was dreaming lovingly of roundabouts by the time I left...) I would also really appreciate advice on the best shopping centre and cost to get there via a taxi from POFQ. Hi vogue is not really what I'm after, but too many new shoes would be good ;)
