Are any other campers using this site? I've heard rumors that WDW is planning to revamp the pool in the campground (very plain compared to the resorts) after the demise of River Country. Anyone else heard anything?

Also, what are your favorite activities in Ft. Wilderness? We go in October so we like to walk around and see all the decorated campsites!!! We are looking forward to the Haunted Hayride next time.

We love to go camping at FW. In fact we just went Sept.21-23. We had a great time as always. There are so many things we enjoy doing when we are at the 'fort'. We like to rent a golf cart and drive around checking out all the other loops, we love to watch the fireworks from the beach and also the Electrical Light Pageant (is that what it's called?). My DH and DS (14) rented a canoe this trip. My othe DS (8) went fishing right from our site and caught a couple of small fish. We always do the campfire program and next time we plan to go horseback riding. I know there's a lot more, but I haven't had enough caffine yet today. LOL

As for the pool I've heard a lot of rumors too. From what I've been told River Country won't be transformed into a pool for FW anytime soon, if ever. I don't know if there are any 'real' plans to update the current pools or if it's all rumors. Guess we will have to wait and see!

I heard the River Country space was going DVC. I love Fort Wilderness so many of the guide books seem to overlook it too :)

I think they should just build more camp-sites!

My kids like to visit the horse barn and the petting zoo! We like to watch the light parade from the beach, and eat at Trails End. This is where we always stayed when I was a kid. It seems virtually unchanged since then. A pool rehab would definitely be in order imo.

Does anyone remember the train that once ran through Fort Wilderness or am I dating myself? At one time it ran from Pioneer Hall to the front gate. You can still see some of the old railroad beds in the campground.

I don't remember the train. Although I've been going to WDW for a long, long time I didn't start going to FW until about 15 years ago. I do have an old travel guide that shows pics of it and yes, I have seen the tracks.

I never saw the train, but I read an article about it this summer on AllEarsNet:

i REMEMBER THE TRAIN:) Do you also remember there was a guy that played the piano at night in the restaurant/arcade and he would do a comedy/sing along type of show. Not sure what the name of the restaurant was, but I think it was in what is now Pioneer Hall? I know it was much bigger than Trails end and had billiards, etc. Anyone remember that?

I have been camping at FW since I was 5, and I absolutely love it. I'm one of the people that loves to decorate our campsite when we're there for a while. If you're going to be at the Fort around Christmas time it is worth it to just walk around and look at the light displays that some of the long term campers set up - some of them could probably rival the Osborne Light Show!

Of course anyone who has been to FW knows about the Campfire show, but even after fifteen years I still love seeing this show and sitting around the campfire - especially when Sundee is on. The pool is a whole other consideration. I've heard for years that the pools were going to be renovated (the small Wilderness one actually was a couple of years ago). River Country imo is beyond repair and will never reopen as such (I've been in it - it's really bad). However the main Meadows Pool is old and in desperate need of repair, especially since its been broken several times of the last few winters. At one point that I complained we were told to use the Wilderness Lodge pool, but they really need to expand and modernize the current one. (Maybe even add a hot tub?)

And lastly, there is video on You Tube of the old Fort Wilderness train that I absolutely love - alas I was never able to ride because we didn't get there until 1993. I do remember when the buses used flags to denote where they were going!

has anyone stayed in the cabins, we have 4 children besides ourselves, are the cabins comfortable? Are the beds comfortable?

I stayed at the Ft. Wilderness cabins this past June with my 3 nephews, niece and sister. Due to a severely twisted ankle, I skipped the bed and slept on the couch with my ankle iced and elevated. However, no one in my family had any complaints about the beds at the cabin (either the bunk beds, murphy bed or queen bed).

We had a great time at Ft. Wilderness - renting bikes to ride around the resort; pony rides for the little one; nightly campfire & movie; watching the fireworks and electrical water pageant. We have never had such a good time at a resort. You will love it!

Now that you mention it I do remember the piano guy. He was great. I wonder whatever happened to him...

The cabins are awesome - the beds are great and it gives the kids they're own "room" (while you sleep in the murphey in the living room) and it gives them the air of privacy and being grown up while you still have a good handle on them. . . and there is a double and bunk beds for the 4 kids. :)

has anyone stayed in the cabins, we have 4 children besides ourselves, are the cabins comfortable? Are the beds comfortable?

I really like the cabins.

If you are planning to stay there, then think about ordering groceries delivered as they have a very functional, very clean little kitchen.

And a grill outside too.
