View Full Version : Disney's New York Adventure?

According to the NBC 11:00pm news broadcast out of Burbank (7/22/02), CA., representatives of Disney were scouting land in New York near (not exactly sure how near) Coney Island. Could they be considering building a theme park there?
How wrong would that be, considering how great the in-American theme parks have been, lately? Maybe that wasn't the purpose for the scouting, but it's interesting to ponder a Disney's New York Adventure, similar to Disney's California Adventure.
After all, it was mentioned on previous threads and articles on this site that DCA might possibly be a prototype for future parks of a similar nature. What if there is actually truth to that, despite the current failure to DCA. Could DNYA be a reality come, say, the next decade?
What would there be, anyway? A generic Coney Island almost down the street from the real Coney Island? New York Taxi a la Superstar Limo? Empire State Building of Terror (perhaps not the best title in these times)? Overpriced shopping and dining? A phoney Broadway with Anne Hamburger's shows?
I'm sure this isn't going to happen, but it is interesting to ponder in a cynical sort of way.

Maybe they're considering moving Paradise Pier, lock, stock, and barrel, to Coney Island?? :p

As ridiculous as it might seem, perhaps it's a stroke of genius .......

(1) New York is already a popular worldwide destination so why not a somewhat scaled-down Disney park at Coney Island? Easily reachable in a day outing from Philadelphia, New York and Boston ...... no small amount of potential visitors to draw from there!

(2) Attractions could mimic or be new versions of some of the old Coney Island favorites (ever seen some of the older coasters in books or old film? Scary, whimsical, dangerous, very compelling from a nostalgic and historical sense ...........

(3) If they don't want to build the volcano from TDS in Florida or Callifornia, how about New York's Coney Island?

(4) Disney could very much get away with a scaled down park - no need for multiple lands or themes - simply a single theme of Coney Island with a single day visitor in mind

(5) New York is very expensive and people pay through the nose for entertainment there - why not a 10 ride Disney park with $35 admission charge and carefully monitored and restricted attendance to ensure at least one ride on everything in the park?
Still cheaper than a Knicks or Rangers or Yankees game ...........

(6) Lastly, a possible focal point in New York for things Disney - place for Eisner and the boys to hang out in the big apple on their own turf .........

They'd have to clean o'er the land for 30 years, day and night, to get that area Disney-clean! I advise them to run, run, run far from that area! Let it be, or a curse o'er both your houses!

Oh yeah, sure it will take some work to clean up, but think of the benefits:

(1) Disney in New York - talk about food to the starving masses ...

(2) Great publicity - "Disney Spearheads Rebirth of Most Famous Amusement Park in the World" and "Disney Brings Jobs and Financial Windfall to Big Apple"

(3) Cleanup - don't you think New York would help out a little for this kind of jewel? Don't you think New York could pop for rail lines and freeway access? Don't you think New York wouldn't offer up land fairly cheap for such a project (of course with the idea that they would get a great financial benefit from it?)

(4) Remember the 1965 World's Fair in New York? Disney produced Small World, Mr. Lincoln and the Dinosaurs used at WDW Universe of Energy and DL's Primeval World for that event .... the success of the Disney attractions provided a lot of impetus to Walt to build an east coast park

(5) Eisner ego trip - how about someplace for ME to hang out in NY?

Disney already took over Times Square. Leave the rest of New York alone! ;)

I'm one NY'er that would be THRILLED if they built any type of theme park --- big or small -- here especially in Brooklyn where there are no tolls to pay for me to get there!!! :D

They did such an amazing job on Times Square -- the ESPN zone, the New Amsterdam theater, the huge Disney store(s) and we were supposed to get a DisneyQuest but I think they decided against it once the Chicago one did not do well and had to close down. So, because of Times Square they really don't need to do a shopping district like DTD just a park and a day park would be great --- I will be the first annual passholder!! :D :) :D

(minor movie spoiler alert)

I think Eisner saw Spielberg's latest movie just one too many times.
