View Full Version : Single parent advice? [WDW]
Nursesandy65 09-28-2007, 02:44 PM I am taking my 2 kids, ages 6 and 9 to WDW Dec 5-9, 2007. We have been saving and planning a long time (3 years) for this. Are there any rides that 3 people can't sit together on? My 9 year old is scared of everything and my 6 year old is a daredevil. My rule is that we all ride together or no one goes on it.(Unless it's a kiddie ride) My kids aren't into characters that much, they're all about the shows and rides. My 6 year old is short so we can't go on anything with a height restriction above 44". The last time we went to an amusement park, my 9 year old(then 7) was talked into going on a roller coaster by her cousin, she cried for the rest of the day and refused to go on any rides. I really, really, really want them to have a great time at WDW. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Drince88 09-29-2007, 05:26 AM I guess it depends on how "together" you mean by sitting together. One thing I'd recommend is getting either the Unofficial Guide (from the library if they have a fairly recent version) for you to read the detailed descriptions of the attractions OR Birnbaum's For Kids, by Kids, which was GREAT for my 8 year old nephew who was generally fine if he knew what was going to happen. That book really helped calm his anxieties.
Magic Kingdom
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is generally 2 people in each row, with a bar restraint for both. As an adult I was able to ride in one row with my 6'4" brother and his ALMOST 3 year old who was tall enough when the nephew wanted to ride again, but I'm not sure if they'd allow all of you to sit together today (that was 18 years ago - my little nephew is almost 21 and taller than his dad!)
Pirates is a bigger boat, so that would work fine for you to all sit in the same row
Splash Mountain is 2 sitting side by side, so you wouldn't all be in the same row.
Haunted Mansion has Doom Buggies, and you'll likely all fit in one, if you're average sized.
Stitch is one I would just skip - it's pretty scary for many kids.
Space Mountain (44" limit) seating is 'single file'. You could all three sit in consecutive seats, but not side by side.
Epcot
Soarin' has long rows, so you'd all sit next to each other
Spaceship Earth seating is 2 x 2, with 2 rows in each ride vehicle section.
Mission:Space (44" limit) is rows of 4, but I'd highly recommend doing the less intense version.
Test Track is setup perfectly for your group - 2 rows of seats, but 3 seats in each row.
Maelstrom is a boat ride, and I think you can all fit side-by-side. I was unsure about including this one in the list, but some kids seem to freak out with it.
Disney-MGM Studios
Tower of Terror seats 3 or 4 in each row, so you should be good there
Rockin Rollercoaster (48" limit) has 2 in each row
Star Tours is a big ride vehicle, so you'll all be in one row.
Animal Kingdom
Expedition Everest (44" limit) is 2 people in each row (look at the ride pictures at the end in the gift shop if you want to see how close the rows are together)
Dinosaur is 4 across, so shouldn't be a problem
Kilimanjaro Safari is a bench seat in a jeep, so should be good there (they just changed the ride vehicles here, but I doubt if they changed that part - I think it was other things they changed out)
Kali River Rapids is seated in a circular raft, so should be fine
Primeval Whirl (48" limit) is 4 across in a vehicle.

My daughters are about the same ages as your kids. My six year old is the scardy-cat (especially with anything in the dark), and my nine year old is pretty selective about her ride expriences. She is fine with stuff like the teacups, but won't do a rollar coaster. At the MK, they both really enjoyed Buzz Lightyear, but you can only fit two people in one car, although it is continuous load, so you would be basically together. Try the Jungle Cruise, where everyone can sit together (it is really tame, and not scary). At Epcot, my nine-year old adores Soarin', which is the sensation of flying and height, but you don't actually move fast. There is a height restriction on it, but smaller kids use the loop in the seat belt, between their legs. My younger daughter hasn't tried that one yet, but she likes the Nemo ride at the Seas (very tame). They both love the Journey into Imagination ride with Figment, which is very tame. Try any of the 3-D shows, like Mickey's Philharmagic at the MK. At Epcot, my older daughter went on Maelstrom and did not like it at all. The kids can also spend a lot of time in the Innovations pavillions at Epcot, which is just kid-friendly interactive stuff. You can also take them around to the Kidcot stations at Epcot. They can collect stamps at all the country pavillions. Again, no rides involved, but fun for the kids. There is a very tame boat ride at the Mexico pavillion.
HTanner 10-01-2007, 07:15 PM Check out the Disney website for WDW. You can usually search for rides by age group - and they give a description.
We took my 2 and 1 year old on Ellen Energy Adventure in Epcot. It has long benches. They both liked it - - although it is REALLY loud. My kids weren't scared at all by the dinosaurs, just the loud noises! LOL!!
Other things to do:
Lights Motors Action - show is really good. (MGM) There is a lot of action and nothing scary.
Great Movie Ride - long bench ride. Your kids will probably not recognize any of the movies - except maybe Wizard of Oz - but it should be fun, anyhow.
Backlot Tour - bench seats. A little boring and outdated, but some parts are fun.
Animation Tour - well worth it, but go on a weekday instead of the weekend. Animators are not working on weekend, so you can't see them working.
Little Mermaid Show - great.
Animal Kingdom -
Primeval Whirl - seats 4, I believe. I personally dislike the ride because I find it to be very jerky and it threw me around, but I have heard that kids like it and other people I have talked to did not have the same problems I did.
train to conservation station. It can be fun up there, especially the petting zoo.
Lion King show - must see.
Magic Kingdom - People have mentioned most of them, but here are a few I thought of.
Pooh Ride - the honey pots are a little roomier than the HM buggies, so you should fit in.
Mr. Toad - you should fit in at least one car.
TTA - you will fit in this one.
Autopia (I know that's what its called in DL, but can't remember the WDW ride - the little cars...) - you will all fit in a car.
Its a Small World.
Mickey's Philharmagic - a MUST see. There are some scary parts, but I think your kids are old enough to not be scared by it.
Flying Carpets - like Dumbo, but with larger seats. If you can't fit in one row, you should be able to fit comfortable on one carpet, which seats are close enough to talk to each other during the ride.
Peter Pan - you should be able to fit in the boat together. We fit both me and my husband and the two babies - and I am not a small woman.
Have fun! I am jealous - I want to be going!
