Hi Everyone,
We're driving down from Fremont on Friday the 28th. We are insane for leaving at 1:00, but I can't leave earlier from work. We always take I-5 and just cruise through the boring Central Valley. I figure, since we'll be stuck in horrendous traffic anyway, may as well be something more scenic. My question is, should we take 101? If so, how do I get to 5 or Harbor from there? Or, should we take 99 south? Decisions...

The 101 (you're traveling down here, I get to call it by it's proper SoCal name,) runs into I-5 outside of Hollywood.

But. I wouldn't recommend it.

We've made two Central Coast trips this summer and while we loved the trips, the 101 from just north of Santa Barbara through the Valley just crawls. There is a backway freeway you can take once you hit Ventura, but that won't save you from having to slug through Santa Barbara and Carpenteria.

I would take 68O North to 580 East to I 5 South.. The drive from Pleasanton to Tracy will be a little backed up, but not that much.. just until you get over the altamont... I agree with the previous reply, 101 is nice, but long during commute.. Have a Safe & Fun Trip!
