If I fly and use DME...Can I get a rental car on site for 2 days?

Yes you can... The Swan/Dolphin has rental desks as well as the Car Care Center that is on property as well.

I was actually wondering the same thing. How easy is it to get to the car care center if you are staying on-property? Do you walk there from the TTC or is there some other transport there? Otherwise it sounds like the Swan & Dolphin would be the most convenient to get to.

Also, do you know which companies are at each location?

Thanks.

If you call Alamo/National the Car Care Center they will pick you up at no charge from any of the Resorts on property and take you to the CCC. When you return the car they will take you to any Resort or Park Entrance.

I kind of consider WHERE I'd be before I went to pick up the car, to determine if the Dolphin was easier to get to, or the Car Care Center. If I was in a park (particularly Epcot or the Studios) and was picking up the car in the afternoon or evening, I'd do the Dolphin. If I was going to be AT my resort, I'd do like Cheshire Figment suggested, and call the Car Care Center for a pick up (Mousesavers recommends calling them the night before to schedule).

Make sure you leave plenty of time to complete the transaction. You may not need it, but you sure don't need a speeding ticket trying to get to the cruise terminal on time, either! Also, I'm not sure how either location deals with late in the day returns. That might be another consideration.

Does anyone know if the national car rental companies charge more at these two sites, much like they do at an airport?

The airport rates are always the lowest, even within the same car company, as there is more competition. Disney Car Care Center and the Swan/Dolphin location will be a bit more, but are worth the convenience. In my experience both close early though, meaning you return the car the next day if they don't allow an after hours drop off (some car locations don't).

The airport is 20-30 minutes away depending on traffic, so this is often not an option with the expense of getting there and back. But the airport rental counters are open 24 hours and the rates are a bit lower.

The RATE may be lower, but a lot of times the airport authority tacks on a TON of extra expenses/taxes to pay for upgrades, so if you're comparing rates, you need to compare 'fully loaded' rates to get an accurate representation of which one is less expensive.

Ditto.

The Orlando airport fee is around 10%, in addition to the tax, and FL state surcharges. Compare total rates before you decide.

We rented a car from Downtown Disney's DoubleTree Hotel. They have a Budget car rental desk in the lobby. I remember getting a very good rate from them (we reserved ahead of time).

We stayed at Saratoga Springs and my husband walked over to pick it up. But otherwise, you could take a Disney bus to Downtown and walk from there (it's really not that far).
