We have been to WDW several times and each time I have avoided space mountain with our 6 yr.old I have no problem with coasters (I took him on Everest),its the single rider in car that I worry about. Any input?

we took our (smallish then, smallish now:)) then 5 yr. old son in 2003. I hadn't been on it in years, and frankly forgot about it being single rider up until we got on. Well, he was on in front of me and I just about yelled for them to stop the ride. didn't think my little guy could handle it. My husband will tell you that I reached up and tried to hold onto him! And yelled to him to hold on the entire time!!!!!!!!!!!

he, of course, loved it. survived it and goes on it everytime!

Seriously though - he was measured twice I think and made the size cut so he was fine. Me? I survived, too;)

If he enjoyed Everest, I don't think I'd hesitate to take him on Space. It's rougher, but for a 6 year old, that's not something he's even likely to notice. As long as he's tall enough, and can handle the dark part with you being behind him, I say go for it.

(But I'm not a parent, so I'm not as sensitive about the solo-seat thing as many Moms seem to be! Last time I rode it with a kid was when my youngest sister was 7 and I was 17 and they still did the 'cuddle' seating - she didn't like it, though - but she would have hated Everest at that age.)

the child will be fine - i've taken my 4-5 yr old on it plenty of times and she has a blast!!

me on the other hand? i'm always a little paranoid about her on it . :( :p

He/she will be fine! Our 6 year old met the height requirement this past May and AFTER seeing how much enjoyed Everest which, by the way, is twice the coaster Space Mountain is, we couldn't keep him away. I wouldn't let the fact that it's a single person seat discourage or scare you. They have height restrictions for a reason and if he/she is tall enough to ride, go for it and have a blast!!!!

My most clear memory of my trip to WDW as a child in either '81 or '82 is of my great-aunt declaring that I was too young to ride Space Mountain, even though I was tall enough at the time.

Boy was I livid, to this day I've not been on the one at WDW! If he wants to go and is tall enough, I think you should let him! :)

Ok he keeps assuring me he won't freak out in the dark and with all the encourging posts here when we go in Oct. I'll let him ride (with me directly behind him of course:))

My only advice would be to keep him out of the front seat (Row 1). With no seat in front of you, your legs are exposed, there's nothing but the bar to hold on to and it feels more like you might fall out if you hit a good bounce.

My daughter went on it (then 3) she loved every minute of it....but then she is quite a daredevil.

My twins were 6 for our last visit to Disney. SM was their favorite ride. I think one night they went on it 9 times in a row--till I couldn't take another ride!!

It may totally depend on your child. Next trip your child may want nothing to do with the attraction. Glad your child liked it.
