I'm looking to buy a new treadmill. Our current (old) one is great for walking but not designed for running. I'd like to find one I can run on too. Anyone here have one they like that can handle running as well as walking? Any suggestions on what to buy are much appreciated.
Thanks!

If you're looking for a treadmill that holds piles of clothes? Ask me.
Otherwise, I'm not help.

I have no specific model suggestions, but I do recommend checking Craigslist or other local buy/sell forums. Many people buy new exercise equipment and then never (or rarely) use it--we bought an almost-new treadmill, which runs $850 new, for $150 through Craigslist.

Too funny Adrienne! I've had gym equipment like that before too! I seem to remember my stair stepper was great for hanging clothes on to dry!!!

Thanks Andrew! Excellent idea! I was thinking of selling my old one on there but didn't think to look for a new one.

I bought a new treadmill around the Memorial Day sales and I love it. I wanted a decent treadmill but didn't want to spend a ton of money. I ended up getting a Horizon DT680. Horizon has one of the better warranties out there, and their customer service line was great when I had a quick question.
It is getting used nearly every day at this point (between 2 of us) and it seems to be holding up really well. One of the things I really liked about it was the safety latch on it. Almost all of the other low to mid-level treadmills that fold up really "drop" the running surface when you unlatch them. The Horizon actually has to be pushed down to hit the ground....a big selling point with 3 kids at home. The tread on it was slightly narrower than some of the Proforms, but my DD and I are slightly vertically challenged so that wasn't an issue for us at all.
I hope this helps!

swanie,
Thanks for replying. I like that safety feature you mentioned! Our current treadmill is a 7 year old Proform. It has just a pin that you pull out and the bottom drops down. Not at all safe to have around our two boys so it's out in the garage which is NOT a good place to workout when it's 100 degrees outside. I'd love to have one I can use inside!

I would recommend checking out Consumer Reports reviews. You can either go online to their website and pay for access, or look at the local library for back issues. They have great reviews of treadmills. If you want one you would like to run on as well as walk, be prepared to spend a good amount of money. The cheapy ones don't handle running.
Like Andrew said, you can probably find one used, but you should do your homework first. I use the ones at my work or apartment complex. They are great for when the weather is less than ideal.
