View Full Version : Toddler Potties
I used the "Search" function & have been reading old posts for the past 45 minutes or so, and read the info on the (now seemingly outdated) MousePlanet potty page. I didn't find the info I want, so please bear with me...
We are going to DLR next week with our 3 1/2 year old daughter who is doing pretty well on her potty learning. This will be the first DLR trip for which she's not completely diaper-dependent, and I have a few questions:
1. Do all of the restrooms have toddler-size potties?
2. Where is the Baby Care Center in DCA?
3. What restrooms should I just avoid altogether with DD?
I don't know yet if she'll be scared by automatic flushing toilets, so I'll be bringing some post-its (just in case).
Thank you in advance for any advice!
dsnyredhead 08-22-2007, 08:56 PM Unfortunately, the only place that I know of to find a toddler potty is in the Baby Care Centers. All the other restrooms have full adult size toilets. The Baby Care Centers generally are not overcrowded though and we've never had to wait very long, if at all to "let" our child sit on the potty. If your child is not very large, you can check your local BabiesRUs store to see if they have one of the foldable potty seat inserts that can fit over the large toilet seats. My son has gotten too large for those (he is three and a half) so it really depends on how large your child is.
In DCA the Baby Care Center is located behind the Tortilla Factory in the Pacific Wharf section.
AK will probably chime in with what restroom to avoid all together.
I'm glad to hear your child is doing well with potty training. Now if I could just get my 3 1/2 year old to that point, I'd be happy. :(
adriennek 08-22-2007, 09:40 PM 3. What restrooms should I just avoid altogether with DD?
Most of them are closed now. They're the tiny ones.
Really, when it comes to a kid who's potty training, I would never avoid a potty if she has to GO NOW. If it's gross, she'll learn to go before she has to go or she might get stuck in a gross potty, lol. :)
The DCA bathrooms are HUGE so there are really few worries there. Is the potty behind the DCA carousel still open with the midway construction going on? I'm a little clueless about that area because I haven't been there for a really looooooong time. The last time I was there, it was near one of the DCA smoking sections and I hated having to walk through all the smoke and smell there, so I'd avoid it if I could and if those factors are still in place.
Otherwise I can't think of any off the top of my head - yet.

Drince88 08-23-2007, 04:47 AM If you forget the post-its, I'd assume many cast members have Mickey stickers they give to kids. Ask for one of those for YOU, and you can just pull back the backing a little and use it. Don't pull it back all the way because the adhesive is pretty good (and so it'll be hard to get off) - and if you just reapply the backing you can put it in your pocket for next time.
Thank you for the help!
I have a feeling that she won't be scared by the automatic flushers since not much really seems to faze her (I think the vacuum cleaner is about it). I think she'd be ok with my holding her on an adult potty (we've done it at home), especially if I play up the "big girl" aspects of the experience. She's not yet in the "I can do it myself" thing about pottying -- she seems to be happy to have help with her pull-ups & with wiping when she's done. I think we'll make sort of a game of seeing how many potties we can find in the parks. Poor DH... maybe I should have him bring a book. :p
The fold-up potty seat is a great idea, but I suspect she might a little big for them. She's going to be 3 1/2 in just a few weeks & she's always been tall for her age.
dsnyredhead: I had pretty much given up too. We had been having her go on her little potty in the morning right when she got up, but sometimes met resistance. At other times of day, she wanted nothing to do with potties. Then all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, it just "clicked" in her brain. I don't think she's peed in a diaper since then. Now we're trying to work on the pooping thing. She's done it in the potty a few times, but seems perfectly content to use her diaper for that. We don't give her a hard time for it -- I figure it will just "click" one day in her brain. I'm sure your little boy will "click" one of these days, possibly when you least expect it. When is his birthday, anyway? I'm guessing it's pretty close to DD's (March 9, 2004).

His birthday is November 16, 2003. So a few months difference although girls tend to train earlier than boys....so age really doesn't matter. I'm hopeful that with preschool he will learn quickly. I know he knows what to do because he had been doing well about a year or so ago and then regressed and with various things going on he hasn't managed to get back to where he was at that point.
Seashellmama 08-23-2007, 05:06 PM I'm not sure if you're already clear on this, but I wanted to say- the scary thing about the automatic flushers is not that they flush for you, but that they'll flush WHILE a little kid is sitting on the toilet, and they're loud and the water is splashing and, well, I'd be annoyed if they did that to me, too. Using something to cover the sensor is a courtesy to your child, because the system is not designed for someone her size and can easily malfunction (flush while still in use) when she uses it.
Ooooh - I hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely cover them for her, then. :)
Thank you, Seashellmama!
Rapunzelthorn 08-25-2007, 08:20 PM You don't necessarily have to hold them on the big toilets if you face them backwards.
Yesterday's Disneyland trip was a rousing success!
1. We found out that the toddler potties in the Disneyland Baby Care Center are manual flush ("old-fashioned" handles) -- NOT automatic.
2. We found out that DD is not too concerned about automatic-flush toilets. I had her on adult potties a few times when we were nowhere near the Baby Care Center -- her eyes went wide when the toilet flushed with her still on it, but relaxed when Mommy laughed at the "silly toilet." :p
3. We found out that the Baby Care Center closes before the rest of Main Street. I was hoping to have her go on the little potty once more before we left the park (a few minutes after 10pm, I think), but we wound up having to go to the restroom up by the fire station.

The DCA BCC potties are auto-flush but they've put a "permanent" sticker over the sensor so it won't go off. :)

The fold up potty seats are great. My tall 5yo, used it until he was over 4. It isn't so much about height, but about tushy size. Takes away that fear that they will fall in. Folds small enough to stick in a diaper bag or stroller. I have seen them at Babies R Us for really reasonable.

Maybe my son just moves around too much but the only one that has worked was a big thick one that we ordered online. The ones that they sell at BRU slide sideways into the toilet and just don't work with my son...and he's a skinny kid. Tall but skinny.

This is the one we have.

It has rubber pads on the bottom so it stays still on the toilet seat and then the handles for the kiddos to hold on to. Folds small too.
Oooh - I may have to try that. I was having DD hang onto me rather than the sides of the toilet seat (ugh), but it was challenging. Even on the toddler potty, she was sinking down if she sat back too much.

I was always worried, I have 2 boys, with them hanging on to me, that I was going to get sprayed. Not to mention that my legs would cramp when I had to squat down waiting for them to go #2.
dsnyredhead 08-31-2007, 04:49 PM Now if I could just get my son to actually use the potty, then I'd be happy. Preschool starts Tuesday. Hopefully he will be peer pressured into getting potty trained.

It took my oldest son 4 days, poop and pee, just before he turned 2, I had DS #2 by then and didn't like having 2 in diapers. With DS#2, it took him 4 months. Finally we started disciplining him when he would have accidents, he would go to the naughty corner, because he knew when he needed to go and chose not to. Not even a week of that he was trained, that was last October. I was fit to be tied, as I thought I had plenty of time before preschool started, starting him 2 months before, as he could not go to preschool unless he was trained. Needless to say, he started school in October. LOL
dsnyredhead 08-31-2007, 09:03 PM DS is supposed to be trained before preschool but they actually said "working on it" so we're not in an emergency mode luckily. We've started having ds help clean up any accidents. He's going to a cooperative preschool so there are going to be other parents as well as myself there one day a week helping him get to where he finally learns. Hopefully the peer pressure will help as well.
Sort of off subject, but when I was potty training my son we stayed at the Paradise Pier Hotel. He loved their toilets cause the opening is actually narrower than most. When he sat he didn't feel like he was going to fall through. It was a really nice bonus. We didn't have to use the potty seat we brought.
