View Full Version : Universal Coasters- How Scary?
spacemtngirl 08-13-2007, 10:04 AM My whole life I never rode major roller coasters until I got up the courage to ride Rock N Rollercoaster at MGM. Loved it. That same trip after much debate, I got on Hulk and loved it. Next move: Tower of Terror. That was WAY too much! I hate to drop so those rapid launches on RCRC & Hulk were great for my ease into being a coaster rider. I don't want to be a turkey again and skip the dragons coaster at IOA next month. Could you rate it against the coasters I've been on? Hulk, Space Mountain, Everest, RNRC – all cake. Wish they were bigger. TOT- scared me to death. How bad are the dragons??? When you're as nervous as I am- details really help to work up the courage to ride.

You can pick either the red or the blue dragon, and I've heard that one side is scarier if you're sitting in the front row because you can see more when the two dragons are close to crashing into each other. I sat on the red dragon, and honestly, I didn't think it was that big a deal. More than Space and maybe around RNRC from what I recall. I'd say Hulk is much more intense - I liked that a lot.
I liked the queue very much. My suggestion is to stand outside and watch the coaster for a while. You can pretty much see what it does, and that should give you an indication. But I'd say if you can handle/liked Hulk, Dueling Dragons should be a cakewalk.

I think that sums up my viewpoint as well. I was not a huge fan of the Hulk (I think it was the time of day, in part) and I thought I would have issues with the feet dangling on the dragons, but it really wasn't that big of a deal. We were in one of the back rows, though, so I didn't have to stress about the other coaster. In fact, I thought the 'dueling' part was pretty lame. We did do both the 'fire' and 'ice' sides (and sat near the back on both) - and I probably would have done it again - but I would have sat out doing the Hulk a second time.
cocoabeach 08-15-2007, 08:59 AM Yep, dragons is not as intense as Hulk so you should be fine. Plus it has the coolest queue ; ) Seriously. I love walking through the line.
The unique feature is the fact that there are three spots where the coasters appear to be heading right at each other. Honestly though, if you aren't in the front row or two, it's easy to not even notice this since all you see are your feet dangling at the other coaster riders' feet. It makes your mind twist thinking of how that is possible if you haven't been on it.
This might sound counterintuitive but even though you didn't like Tower of Terror, you might actually like Dr. Doom's Fearfall at Islands. If you liked the beginning of Hulk, Dr. Doom is basically that very part. The ride back down is a nice view and smooth so you don't feel the drop feeling like ToT. I don't love Dr. Doom but for me it's mostly because it's way too short.
garethanders 08-16-2007, 05:36 AM Most rollercoaster are like anything else, the more you do them the lass afraid you are, an example of this is the Nemasis Roller coaster in Alton Towers in the uk ive rode it that many times you become bored of it so you need to seek out new coasters to thrill you.
You will like the dragons and make sure you ride both of them as they are two different rides
spacemtngirl 08-16-2007, 12:53 PM Thanks- this is really helpful.
I have this memory burned in my mind of my sister in law coming off dragons going' If you don't like drops, dont' go on this one!!' We had just been Hulk like 3 times in a row ( very small crowds after Thanksgiving day) and I made the group do a test of Dragons before I went on. I was feeling brave! Two of them said I could handle it- but she advised me not to go so I skipped it. Hmmm guess I'll never know until I try. I'll have to watch it on You Tube and think about it. I could tell from watching Hulk that there were no major drops & got the OK from the group that I could handle it- so I got over my fear of that one. Such a huge coaster with such little dropping sensation- amazing!
I agree about Dr. Doom- I watched that on You Tube and everyone screams on the way up- and then that's it. Nobody seems to mind the rest of it after the launch.
wishiwasthere 08-21-2007, 05:05 PM On Dr. Doom after the launch nothing happens. You basically just float down.
I don't remember any drops on Dueling Dragons besides the first one but that is just like the Hulk. It's that curvey type of drop. To me the closer you sit to the front the less intense it is because it's a little slower.
SuefromRI 08-21-2007, 08:22 PM I had always been a chicken about coasters til recently when my kids got me on them, starting at age 40. I like the take-off on CA Screamin, RRC and Hulk, now that I finally tried it. TOT has become my favorite WDW ride. I was nervous the first time on DD cuz I don't like the height going up and then a big drop. It doesn't drop, just curves first. I found it less intense than Hulk, but had a problem the first time by watching the cars in front of me so as not to look down-mistake cuz the swinging movement made me nauseous, not the actual ride. Since then I have been fine on it.
