View Full Version : flickr vs. smugmug
disney jones 07-31-2007, 12:05 AM i've been a smugmug account holder for several years and am pretty happy with it, but i know flickr is popular too.
so what's so good and cool about flickr (especially when compared to smugmug)?
thanks!!
stan4d_steph 07-31-2007, 07:28 AM What I like about flickr:
I love being able to apply tags to my photos to group them together thematically.
I love being able to search other people's photos based on tags.
I like being able to link other friends and family albums.
Andrew 07-31-2007, 09:17 AM I use Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/). What's good about Picasa:
Client-side photo organizer/editor that can be used independently of Web-side photo gallery
Ties in to existing Google account
Supports tagging, multiple galleries, searching, slideshows, all the usual stuff
Tons of space and free
Vegitabeta 07-31-2007, 11:03 AM I'm with Photobucket, and I've not had a problem with it!
stan4d_steph 07-31-2007, 11:29 AM I only use Photobucket when forced to do so. Too many ads and distractions.

True, I only use it 'cos it's free:)
sjcivilady 08-05-2007, 04:50 PM I use snapfish (from HP) - have been happy with it (although haven't tried anything else). Only drawback is when you send an "invitation" to friends, they have to register in order to view your pics. I am able to enhance, store in albums, have order shipped from them (takes a week, but is cheaper if doing a lot of pics) or order and pick up in an hour from my Walgreen's down the street. After my cousin sent me access to her pics (of our disneyland trip), I was able to save them in one of my albums.
disney jones 08-12-2007, 02:38 PM besides hearing some cool things about Picasa from Andrew, I'm not hearing anything about flickr that i can't do with smugmug.
I'm just "hearing" flickr is the best - why? what does it have that smugmug doesn't?

I find it easier to navigate around flickr than smugmug. I don't use smugmug at all.

smugmug has "Communities", and can allow your photos to be tagged, and allow them to be found either by Google or internal to smugmug. - i'm not sure if this is what you mean by "Networking". For instance, there might be a "Disneyland" community - i'm not too interested in those though as its mostly just family shots i post.
smugmug has other backgrounds besides black - for showing them off anways, the editing is still in black as far as i can tell. most of my albums don't use back anymore, just themed more appropriately for beach, fall, Christmas, baseball, etc - they're pretty cool i think and more are being added.

Also, when you visit your page, you will see if your friends have uploaded new photos.
I don't know what smugmug has to offer. I don't use it, and I don't usually visit it to view photos because I find the interface and setup to be a turnoff.

To add... Picasa does video pretty good too. Use the Client-side standalone management program to upload videos. Viewers just click on the thumbnail and it plays.
