View Full Version : Petite Children
For those with much more riding experience than myself I have a question about size...We're off to WDW in just a few weeks.
My daughter is 6 years old she is 42 inches tall but only 34 lbs. She is very very petite. Even though she makes the height requirement for a lot of rides, my worry is that she is too thin and could slip. Any thoughts from expert riders? The one that comes to mind for me is BTTR.
My husband says I'm not happy unless I'm worrying but that's my job...
Wendi 07-27-2007, 10:52 AM I can't for the life of me figure out what BTRR is. I think Disney makes every effort to ensure that rides are safe and they must have a pretty good cushion built into their height requirements. I would say that if you don't feel a ride is safe for your child, then you should be the one to make that decision. You can ride first and see if you think the ride will fit her well before letting her go on.

I went on BTMRR with my nephew when he was not quite 3 (he was/is very tall for his age!). I just kind of kept my arm around him to cuddle him close to me when we went on that one.
We weren't sure (his parents were there too) if he was going to like it, so at the end I asked him (before we got out of the seats) how it was, and got a cute 'That was fun, can we go again'. The people behind us laughed too, it was so cute.

My nephew, who just turned 4 in March, was just a 1/4" short to make BTMRR. I was kind of glad as I didn't want to spend the time worrying about him flying out.
VickiC 07-27-2007, 10:34 PM You can sit thre ein a row on Thunder Mountain. Put her between you and your husband and she won't go anywhere.
potterphreak 07-28-2007, 08:35 AM I agree, flank kiddo between you and hubby. I took my (at the time) almost 4 year old to DL in April and it was just me and her and it was VERY scary how she almost flew out of BTMRR. I would have felt much better if I had brought another adult along and we had just sandwiched her in.
Hope that helps and have a GREAT time!!!
dahunter1129 07-28-2007, 11:05 AM My DS is very tall and thin. We did the same as above on BTMRR, put him in the middle and used my Mommy powered arms to hold on. Even though my DS is tall enough for RnR, I am too afraid to let him on it since it does go upside down, so tell your DH you have plenty of company as a worry-wart Mommy. Hey, after all we go through to have them, we have the right to worry!:D
DizneyMommy 07-29-2007, 07:41 AM Personally, my daughter is very thin and tall as well so I can relate to this problem. Any ride where there is one bar for the whole row and the ride is fast or has a height requirement, we do NOT go on. Children can get scared and slide down under the bar very easily to try and escape in a panic - case in point the child who escaped from his seat on Roger Rabbit (before the refurb) and was badly injured. Now some rides have been redesigned to account for this problem, but others have not. My husband and I always try to sit on either side of her when we have ridden a ride for the first time to see how she does with it first (Haunted Mansion for instance) but luckily she does not spook easily and loves the scary rides.
HTanner 08-03-2007, 02:55 PM I probably shouldn't tell you all this story, given the reason for the question, but...
When I was a kid, my brothers and I fought over who got to ride with my dad. My dad was chubby, and the lap bar would stop at his belly - not ours. So, we had plenty of room to "catch air." We used to call it "rollercoaster dad time!" Anyhow, to make you feel better- - none of us ever came close to flying out of the car - and this was on BTMRR. My dad just would reach over and hold onto us. It was a fun thrill for all of us.
However, for a 4 yo - I like the idea of sandwiching the kid. Then no one even has the perception of falling out.

And someday you, too, shall have children and know the anxiety we all feel when placing our children on these rides...just in case your Mom has already not given you the "Just wait til you have kids" curse!:D

Well, I do have two kids - 3 1/2 and 2. Believe me, when the oldest went on his first kiddy coaster (a small, two hill bump in the road), he was flanked on all sides by grammy, uncles, and daddy. LOL! Yeah, I do worry, but I also remember how much I cherish those moments with my dad.

Ahh, the Mom curse has worked...I used to BEG my Grandma to take me to those side of the road carnivals when I was a kid, and disn't understand why she didn't think they were safe. Now my son begs me, and I see the rusty bolts and holes in the seats, and I know my Grandma has had her way...she told me I would understand someday!:D
MommyTo2Boys1Girl 08-08-2007, 06:38 PM I agree in a parent sandwich for kids on BTMRR. Heck I get air on that ride. It is nice to have them in between you, so they aren't banging on the side of that seat. My almost 6yo started loving that ride the first time he went on it, he was 3 1/2. My 4yo is not as tall as his brother was at this age, so he needs another 1/2 inch between now and when we go in December. We are seriously thinking of pushing the trip back if he doesn't make it, because he was devestated when we went last time that he wasn't tall enough. He is just itching to go on BTMRR and Splash and Space. He is such a dare devil, I might even get him on ToT.
